This Fatty Food Promotes A Healthy Heart And Waistline‏

Posted on: Saturday, July 26th 2014 at 4:45 pm

The myth persists that high fat foods gunk up your arteries and pad your hips.  But it's just not true especially when it comes to the highest fat fruit on the planet – the avocado (Persea americana).
In fact, science gives high marks to avocados when it comes to protecting your heart and maintaining a healthy weight.  Recently the HASS Avocado Board commissioned a review of the studies on avocados and their nutrients.[1]
The review cites 125 studies and other sources supporting the actual and potential health properties of avocados.  They contain a wealth of vitamins, minerals, fats, and phytochemicals.  Just one-half an avocado (about 68 grams) contains the following nutrients:
Dietary Fiber
4.6 grams
345 mg
Sodium

Avocado oil contains 71% monounsaturated fat, 13% polyunsaturated fat, and 16% saturated fat. As the avocado ripens, saturated fat decreases and monounsaturated fat increases.
That nutritional profile adds up to long list of health properties.  Here are just some of them.
Avocados Are Heart Healthy
Eight preliminary clinical studies show that eating avocados helps support cardiovascular health.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2006 suggests that people who eat avocados have higher good HDL-cholesterol.  They also have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, and lower weight, BMI, and waist circumference.[2]
In the first clinical study of avocados in 1960, men who ate a half to one-and-a-half avocados a day did not raise their cholesterol levels.  In fact, half the men reduced their cholesterol by 9-43%.  And none of the subjects gained weight when they added the avocados to their regular diet.[3]
Since then at least six studies have suggested that adding avocados to the diet has a positive effect on blood lipids compared to a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet.
As the Hass researchers point out, one avocado (about 136 g) is very similar in nutrient and phytochemical content to 1.5 ounces (42.5 g) of heart healthy tree nuts (almonds, pistachios, or walnuts) with less than half the calories.
Nutrients that contribute to the avocado's heart benefits include the following:
  • Dietary Fiber.  The carbohydrates in avocados consist of about 80% dietary fiber, comprised of 70% insoluble and 30% soluble fiber.[4]
  • Low Sugar. Avocados contain very little sugar compared to other fruits. Their glycemic load is close to zero.  The primary sugar in avocados is a unique seven-carbon compound called D-mannoheptulose.  Half an avocado contains about two grams of the reduced form of this sugar (perseitol).  But perseitol isn't counted as a sugar because it doesn't behave nutritionally like a sugar.[5]  Research suggests D-mannoheptulose may support blood glucose control and weight management.[6]
  • Potassium.  One avocado has about twice the potassium of a banana.  Clinical studies suggest potassium may help control blood pressure. Avocados are also naturally very low in sodium.
  • Antioxidant Vitamins.  Avocados contain significant levels of both vitamins C and E. Clinical research suggests a combination of vitamin C and E may slow the progression of atherosclerosis in people with high cholesterol.[7]
  • B-vitamins.  Avocados are a healthy source of B vitamins.  Deficiencies in B-vitamins such as folate and B-6 may increase homocysteine levels.  High homocysteine may reduce vascular endothelial health and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Carotenoids.  Avocados have the highest fat-soluble antioxidant capacity among all fruits and vegetables.[8] The primary avocado carotenoids are a subclass known as xanthophylls.  These are fat-soluble antioxidants.  Xanthophyll carotenoids include lutein, β-cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin.
Results from the prospective Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study suggest that higher levels of plasma xanthophylls may be protective against early atherosclerosis.[9]
In Hass avocados, xanthophylls lutein and cryptoxanthin contribute about 90% of the total carotenoids. The highest carotenoid levels are concentrated in the dark green flesh of the fruit under the peel as opposed to the lighter green in the center or the yellow flesh near the pit.
Your body needs fat to absorb and use carotenoids.  Avocados have naturally high levels of both.   Research shows adding avocado to salad without dressing, or serving avocados with salsa increases carotenoid bioavailability by 2–5 times.[10]
Avocados Promote Weight Loss
Several clinical studies suggest avocados support weight control.
In one study 61 overweight or obese subjects were put on a weight loss plan.  Half were also asked to substitute one and a half avocados (200 grams) every day for 30 grams of other fats such as margarine or oil.  After six weeks both groups lost similar amounts of weight, body mass index (BMI) points, and percentage of body weight even though the avocado group was eating much more fat.[11]
And in a randomized, crossover study of 26 healthy overweight adults, those who ate half an avocado at lunch reported significantly less hunger and desire to eat, and increased satiation.[12]

In another study, animals were fed a high-fat diet with or without the addition of an extract of avocado.  After 14 weeks, the group getting the avocado extract exhibited a lower BMI and fat mass, as well as lower LDL cholesterol.  The researchers believe the avocado increased the activity of adiponectin, a hormone secreted by fat cells that regulates blood glucose.  Higher adiponectin helps reduce the risk of obesity.[13]
Other Health Benefits of Avocados
Other studies suggest that nutrients in avocados may have anti-aging effects thanks to their antioxidant powers.  These may include prevention of DNA damage, osteoarthritis, and eye damage.
Several preclinical studies suggest that avocado components may protect skin health by enhancing wound healing activity[14] and reducing UV damage.[15]
Xanthophyll rich avocado extracts have been shown in preclinical studies to have anti-Helicobacter pylori activity.  Researchers believe it may have a potential effect on gastric ulcers, which may be associated with gastric cancer risk.[16]
Studies in prostate cancer cell lines suggest avocado may have antiproliferative and antitumor effects.[17]
While you might think of the avocado as a veggie, it is technically a fruit.  Although there are about 25 different types, Hass is now the primary global variety of avocado. The average California Hass avocado has a pebbled dark green or black skin.  The Fuerte variety has smoother, brighter green skin.
When you buy avocados, look for one that is slightly soft.  It shouldn't have any dark sunken spots or cracks.
If your avocado isn't ripe yet don't put it in the refrigerator.  Leave it in a brown paper bag for a few days to ripen.  You can speed up the process by adding a banana or apple to the bag.   Once it's ripe, it will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.
A sliced avocado will turn brown quickly when exposed to oxygen in the air.  If you use only part of an avocado, sprinkle the exposed surface with lemon juice or vinegar to help prevent browning.
Or better yet just eat the whole thing.  It's good for you.

Never Buy Dishwasher Soap Again! This Borax-Free Soap Recipe Has You Covered

  • There’s no purchase that bums me out more than having to pick up some nasty soap for my dishwasher or clothes washer in a plastic bottle that will have to be thrown away when I’m done with it. I’ve been working on finding a good homemade dishwasher detergent for a while and I’ve found a recipe that seems to work.
I sought out a borax-free recipe as well. Borax is a mineral that occurs naturally and is typically mined sustainably. There have been some claims that borax is carcinogenic, but it’s not at all true. Nevertheless, borax can make you sick if you consume it and can negatively impact your endocrine and reproductive systems, so using borax to wash your dishes isn’t the best plan. So let’s get down to it.
    You will need:
    • 2 Cups of Washing soda
    • 1 Cup of Baking soda
    • 1 Cup of Citric acid
    • 1/2 Cup of Kosher salt
    • 1 Teaspoon of Liquid castile soap
    • 1/2 cup of White vinegar
    • 15 – 20 Drops of Essential oils (optional)
    • Ice cube tray (2)
This recipe should give you between 30 and 50 loads. Here’s how we do it:
    • Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
    • Gradually pour in the vinegar, just a little bit at a time. Some fizzing will probably happen.
    • Mix in the castile soap and essential oil if you choose to use it.
    • Pack the mixture into icecube trays. Make sure they’re well compacted.
    • Set the trays out in a warm, sunny spot, allowing them to dry for about 24 hours.
    • Take the tabs out of the trays and store in a tight-lidded container.
Boom. Pretty easy. In all honesty, you don’t have to use an entire tab if you have a light load or a smaller dishwasher. You can cut them in half and prolong this recipe’s lifespan. And at the end of the day, you’re only spending around $.09 to run a load through the dishwasher. That’s definitely quite the savings!
Have you tried this recipe? Tell us what you think!

Many health care professionals rely on published research to make treatment recommendations, and large numbers of patients can be affected when false findings make their way into otherwise respected journals.
Unfortunately, this happens more frequently than you might think. In recent years, it's become quite clear that the scientific field has a major problem on its hands, as seriously flawed, and worse, outright falsified, research is entering the system at an increasing rate.
Bad information is usually worse than no information at all, especially when we're talking about health and treatment protocols that affect hundreds of thousands of patients.
Today, a majority of public health, diet, and medical treatment recommendations are flat out wrong, and this is precisely why allopathic care continues to become progressively more dangerous, killing patients rather than making them well.
The prevalence of anti-scientific science is also how we've ended up in a world of toxic chemical-based agriculture and subsidized junk food that deteriorates rather than supports health.
Industry and Medical Journals Are Destroying Credible Science
The problem, to a great extent, can be traced back to industry-based and industry-funded research, which has overtaken most scientific fields of inquiry. Independent research, where funding is unrelated to findings, has become a rarity, and the end result is a dramatic deterioration of credible science.
Chemical technology companies like Monsanto also fund colleges and universities, thereby gaining control over research, science, policy, and public opinion.
As an example of the quick deterioration of reputable science, consider the following: between 1966 and 1997, 37 percent of scientific retractions were due to scientific misconduct,1 which includes data falsification or fabrication, questionable veracity, unethical author conduct, or plagiarism.
Fast-forward a little more than a decade and that number skyrockets to 72 percent!2 The highest number of incidents of scientific misconduct occurred in the drug literature, where nearly 75 percent of the drug studies retracted between 2000 and 2011 were attributed to misconduct. Gone are the days when bad research was primarily due to honest human error, it seems.
    Fake Science Run Amok
In recent years, a number of individuals have taken it upon themselves to prove just how easily the system can be fooled by fake science. One "sting operation" was concocted by a science journalist at Harvard University who wanted to test how likely it would be for bad research to be published in Open Access journals.
The bogus paper described a simple experiment supposedly showing that lichens can slow cancer cell growth.3 More than half the journals—157 of the 304—accepted the fake paper for publication. The other half rejected it. The result of his "experiment" was published in Science magazine.4
However, traditional pay-for-access journals are not immune to publishing flawed studies. Most are also beholden to drug companies in one way or another. Investigations have repeatedly shown that studies funded by drug companies favor drugs 80 percent of the time.
This makes such conflicts of interest between Big Pharma and medical journals a major hurdle when it comes to upholding scientific excellence. Earlier this year, a study was published that showed nearly ONE MILLION Europeans were killed over a five-year span through the inappropriate prescription of beta blockers for non-cardiac surgery.
The research serving as the basis for this deadly prescription guideline was published in prestigious peer reviewed journals.
It's also important to realize that all research is NOT published. And it should come as no surprise that drug studies funded by a pharmaceutical company that reaches a negative conclusion will rarely ever see the light of day. This is equally, if not more, detrimental to science-based medicine.
Hundreds of Computer Generated Studies Have Been Published
But it actually gets worse. The featured article in Slate magazine,5 headlined "How Gobbledygook Ended Up in Respected Scientific Journals," is an ominous warning of what is happening to the scientific field as a whole.
"In 2005, a group of MIT graduate students decided to goof off in a very MIT graduate student way: they created a program called SCIgen that randomly generated fake scientific papers. Thanks to SCIgen, for the last several years, computer-written gobbledygook has been routinely published in scientific journals and conference proceedings," Slate magazine reports.
"According to Nature News,Cyril Labbé, a French computer scientist, recently informed Springer and the IEEE, two major scientific publishers, that between them, they had published more than 120 algorithmically-generated articles.6
In 2012, Labbé had told the IEEE of another batch of 85 fake articles. He's been playing with SCIgen for a few years—in 2010 a fake researcher he created, Ike Antkare, briefly became the 21st most highly cited scientist in Google Scholar's database."
So, just how many papers containing computer generated nonsense have been published? It appears no one knows. The creators of SCIgen made the program available by free download, and other people, besides its three creators, have been using it, too.7
Labbé, mentioned above, developed a way to detect SCIgen generated manuscripts, and have alerted publishers about 205 of them so far. But there's no telling how many people, researchers included, have used SCIgen or how many of its papers have actually been accepted for publication. Nature8 writes:
"'The papers are quite easy to spot,' says Labbé, who has built a website9 where users can test whether papers have been created using SCIgen. His detection technique, described in a study10 published in Scientometrics in 2012, involves searching for characteristic vocabulary generated by SCIgen."
How Academic Publishing Contributes to Demise of Science
As reported in the featured Slate article,11 other major contributing factors to this deterioration of scientific merit is the fact that a) academic publishing has became incredibly lucrative, and b) in order to advance your academic career, you have to publish lots of papers.12 As explained by Slate magazine:
"Today, the most critical measure of an academic article's importance is the 'impact factor' of the journal it is published in. The impact factor... measures how often articles published in a journal are cited...13 There is an analogy here to the way Google and other search engines index Web pages. So-called search-engine optimization aims to boost the rankings of websites...
Scientists routinely add citations to papers in journals they are submitting to in the hopes of boosting chances of acceptance. They also publish more papers... in the hopes of being more widely cited themselves. This creates a self-defeating cycle... The only solution, as Colin Macilwain wrote in Nature14 last summer, is to 'Halt the avalanche of performance metrics.'"
NIH Vows to Tackle Science's Reproducibility Problem
In March 2012, Reuters15 reported the shocking finding that the vast majority of the "landmark" studies on cancer cannot be reproduced, and that a high proportion of those unreliable studies come from respectable university labs. Former drug company researcher Glenn Begley looked at 53 papers in the world's top journals, and found that he and a team of scientists were unable to replicate 47 of the 53 published studies—all of which were considered important and valuable for the future of cancer treatments! The allegations appeared in the March 28, 2012 issue of the journal Nature.16
"It was shocking," Begley told Reuters.17 "These are the studies the pharmaceutical industry relies on to identify new targets for drug development. But if you're going to place a $1 million or $2 million or $5 million bet on an observation, you need to be sure it's true. As we tried to reproduce these papers we became convinced you can't take anything at face value."
The "reproducibility problem" has become so great that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently vowed to tackle it head on, lest science lose all credibility. As reported by FierceBiotech:18
"[T]hanks to some high-profile failings in some of the world's leading journals, the call for reform has reached a fever pitch, and National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins has taken up the baton. In an essay published in Nature, Collins and Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak write that 'the checks and balances that once ensured scientific fidelity have been hobbled' over the past few years, as researchers strive to be provocative at the cost of explaining their methodology.

That shoot-for-the-moon paradigm is only made worse by funding agencies, academic centers and journals, the two write, as many science financiers encourage hyperbole in hopes of snagging headlines. And while the problem starts at the preclinical level, it can quickly trickle up into the drug development world. As Reuters
19 reports, Amgen found in 2011 that its researchers could confirm just 6 of the 53 breakthrough cancer studies they vetted, while Bayer said in 2012 that of 67 landmark studies in oncology, women's health, and cardiovascular disease, it could verify only 14." [Emphasis mine]
What's Being Done to Get Science Back on Track?
According to the NIH, part of the reproducibility problem stems from poor training, so a program is being developed to educate researchers on good experimental design and transparent conduct. It really is hard to imagine why researchers would not have received this type of training previously, as this is exactly the kind of training you should get when studying at some of the most respectable universities in the country. In my mind, this is yet another strong indication that industry funding research institutions is a trend loaded with potential for massive abuse.
Other strategies under consideration by the NIH include conducting more in-depth reviews to ensure appropriate scientific basis and viability of research. The NIH is also calling on journals, academics, and industry to assist in correcting current flaws. Journals, for example, are asked to highlight failed studies and corrections, while universities are urged to change priorities to avoid incentivizing premature publication in the interest of gaining tenure. Individual researchers are also urged to explain their methodology in greater detail, to facilitate evaluation of their work. Last but not least, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology will be holding hearings in which researchers and journal editors will be interviewed to get a better grasp of the problems. If deemed necessary, policy recommendations may be issued.
The Era of Decision-Based Evidence Making Is Upon Us; Can This Trend Be Reversed?
It's become quite clear that instead of evidence-based decision making, we now have decision-based evidence making... Scientific evidence appears to be largely concocted to support an already established corporate agenda, and any scientific investigation that refutes or questions it is either suppressed or squelched by virtually any means.
The public is further deceived by clever and highly paid PR firms, disguised as scientific organizations but set up specifically for the purpose of controlling how the media reports new science and portrays industry. Two examples are Science Media Centre (SMC) and the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), both of which are heavily funded by industry. The problem is made worse by the fact that many journalists today are not doing their due diligence in fact-checking their sources.
These organizations are anything but independent, from their scientists to their governing boards. SMC has branches all over the world, its primary purpose being to control the press using a team of not-so-independent scientists who spin science news in industry's favor. SMC "experts" (physicians, research scientists, university professors, etc.) have undisclosed and far-reaching affiliations with biotech giants, including EFSA, Bayer, Pioneer-DuPont, Syngenta, and Monsanto. You've likely seen these so-called experts on the evening news spinning scientific information more times than you can count.
Who and What Can You Trust?
The bottom line is that you need to be skeptical of ANY published study, particularly if it comes from an obscure journal. But you can no longer completely trust even the most respected journals, for all of the reasons discussed above. Always consider the source of the information... Who funded the study and where it was published? Also do not accept the findings of any single paper, as scientific results are only reliable after replication and the building of consensus through time. Always look for corroboration.
In order to determine the best course of action in any situation, you've got to use all the resources available to you, including your own common sense and reason, true expert advice, and the experience of those you trust. Remain skeptical but open. Even if it is something I'm saying, you need to realize that YOU are responsible for your and your family's health, not me—and certainly not the pharmaceutical and/or chemical technology industries who will try to sell you their wares and seduce you with innovative (but often risky) "science-based solutions."
If you're facing a health challenge, make sure your healthcare practitioners really understand health at a foundational level and have extensive experience helping others. In the meantime, be proactive! Making wise lifestyle choices will keep you healthy and decrease your odds of needing risky medical interventions in the future.

  • Most of us have heard  that cell-phone usage could expose you to unhealthy levels of radiation.  But when accumulated over time, exposure to radiation can result in cancer, DNA damage and a weakened immune system. (study) DNA damage disrupts normal cell growth and protein production. In 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), released the statement that cell phone radiation is a “possible human carcinogen.”

Many studies have found  that mobile phone radiation quickly alters and damages your DNA. A six-year industry study showed that human blood exposure to cell phone radiation had a 300 percent increase in genetic damage in the form of micronuclei, suggesting a health threat much greater than smoking or asbestos.
    Radiation Health Dangers Include:
    – Chronic fatigue
    – Depression
    – Digestive problems
    – Memory problems
    – Chronic stress
    – Insomnia
    – Heart palpitations
    – Headaches/migraines
Protect Yourself from Cell phone Radiation with Rosemary
Radiation can be removed from your body through many natural methods  such as rosemary and rosemary essential oil. They posses powerful antioxidant properties against radiation damage.

The British Journal of Radiology, February 2, 2009 found that the fat soluble carnosol and carnosic acids in rosemary “provide highly significant protective anti-mutagenic activity”.   Rosmarinic acid from rosemary acts as a photo-protector both by acting as a scavenger of free radicals and as an inducer of the body’s own endogenous defense mechanisms.  They found that formulation of toxic production was delayed by the use of rosmarinic acid, and the protection factor was 3.34 times greater than for other compounds studied, as measured in micronucleus testing.
    How to Use it:
      • Make rosemary tea.
    Ingredients:
    2 cups boiled water
    2-3 tsp finely chopped leaves
    Directions:
    Fresh:
    • Pour on the boiled water and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes
    Drink Daily

    • Combine rosemary essential oil with a carrier oil (such as jojoba, coconut or or avocado) and apply on the bottom of your feet daily. Rosemary essential oil can also be inhaled after sprinkling a few drops of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or by using an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer.

The humble spice turmeric, in doses available for pennies a day, has been found to reduce one of the most devastating side effects of radiation treatment for head and neck cancer.
Each year, 60,000 patients are diagnosed with 'head and neck cancer,' which includes cancer of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, larynx, oral cavity, and thyroid.[i] Sadly, within the conventional medical model, radiation therapy is the 'standard of care' for this type of cancer, which involves the use of up to 50-70 Grays of radiation over a 5-7 week period.  To put this dose into perspective, a whole-body exposure to 8 Grays of high-energy radiation in a single dose has a 100% mortality rate within two weeks.[ii] This is a major (if not the primary) reason why radiation oncologists use 'fractionation,' breaking the total dose up into smaller fractions over time (1.8-2 Grays per day), in order to prevent the rapid death of the patient from acute radiation poisoning.
The primary adverse symptoms experienced by post-radiation treatment survivors is known as 'oral mucositis,' involving tissue destruction and functional problems in the oral cavity, which is painful, affects nutrition, contributes to local and systemic infections and greatly reduces the quality of life.[iii]  There are other lesser known and potentially more lethal problems associated with radiotherapy, not the least of which is its ability to transform non-tumorigenic cancer cells into tumor-initiating ones (exhibiting cancer stem cell-like properties), but the medical establishment rarely if ever touches upon these downstream effects, many of which can not easily be linked to the treatment, or are conveniently written off as being caused by the recurrence of "treatment-resistant" cancer and not the inherent carcinogenicity of radiotherapy itself.
While in many ways the treatment of head and neck cancer through solely conventional means is tragic today, the medical establishment is beginning to wake up to the utility of natural compounds in at least reducing or preventing unnecessary harm caused by the use of chemotherapy and radiation. There is no denying that a massive body of research has now accumulated showing that spices as common as turmeric are capable of both increasing the effectiveness of conventional treatment while at the same time reducing the collateral damage to the patient caused by them. [Read: Integrative Cancer Research: Surviving Chemo & Radiation for more information]. From the perspective of a patient faced with the inevitable side effects of radiotherapy, it is clearly unethical for practicing physicians to ignore, or worse, deny the evidence that better outcomes are available using an integrative approach.

All the more reason why a new study published in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, should move the oncology community closer in this direction. Titled,"The Indian Spice Turmeric Delays and Mitigates Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis in Patients Undergoing Treatment for Head and Neck Cancer: An Investigational Study,"[iv] researchers evaluated the efficacy of turmeric in preventing radiation-induced mucositis.
In the single-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial conducted with head and neck cancer patients requiring 70 Gray of radiation or chemoradiotherapy (daily radiotherapy plus carboplatin once a week), 80 eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive either turmeric gargle (40) or povidone-iodine (40) during chemo/radiotherapy during the period of treatment.
Oral mucositis was assessed before the start, during, and at the end of the treatment by an investigator unaware of the treatment. The primary endpoint of this study was the incidence of mucositis every week during the 7-week period. The secondary endpoint was the effect of turmeric gargle on the incidence of treatment breaks, loss of scheduled treatment days, and decrease in body weight at the end of the treatment.

    6 DIFFERENT HASHIMOTO'S ROOT CAUSES

    12/7/2013

I often get messages from people with Hashimoto’s and autoimmune disease that say “Thanks for your efforts, but I’ve already tried everything. I have cut out gluten, dairy and soy and still have Hashimoto’s. How can your book help me?”

While changing your diet is a really important first step that will greatly help many of you, if you do not see a complete remission of your condition within 3-6 months, I encourage you to dig deeper. Changing my diet was a really important step in my healing journey, but it was just the beginning.

Dr. Alessio Fasano, world-renowned gastroenterologist, Celiac disease and autoimmunity expert, describes autoimmunity as a three-legged stool that needs three things to be present to manifest:

    1.    The right genes

    2.    The trigger

    3.    Intestinal permeability

While we can’t change our genes, we can reverse the autoimmune condition by removing triggers and intestinal permeability.

You can read about this new advance in autoimmunity here and how I came across this information here.

Dr. Fasano uses the example of Celiac disease to explain this phenomenon. Celiac disease is a unique autoimmune condition where gluten acts as both the trigger, and the cause of intestinal permeability! Once gluten is removed, the body is able to heal and regenerate itself.

Infections have been implicated as triggers in many cases of autoimmunity, and identifying and removing infections may result in a complete remission of the autoimmune condition. You can read more about infections here

Although we can’t always identify and even remove all of the triggers, such as Epstein Barr Virus (the virus that causes Mono), another option is to fix the intestinal permeability. This will also allow many individuals to put their condition into remission, as the “three legged stool” of autoimmunity will no longer be able to stand!

Based on my research over the last four years, I’d like to share with you six potential root causes of intestinal permeability. There are of course many additional root causes, but these six are a great place to start.

Note: some of you may have more than one root cause, and I encourage you to dig!

    Root Cause #1: Gluten Sensitivity

Gluten sensitivity and Celiac disease have been implicated in various autoimmune conditions ranging from Hashimoto’s, Graves’ disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Various tests can be done to determine if one has Celiac disease/gluten sensitivity, however the condition may not always show up on tests. Some individuals do not learn of their sensitivity until they remove gluten from their diets.

Gluten sensitivity may be the sole root cause, or it may be one of a few root causes. Every person with an autoimmune thyroid condition should remove gluten from his/her diet. Even in those who do not have Celiac or gluten sensitivity, gluten causes intestinal permeability.

If gluten was the sole root cause, the person should see a complete remission of thyroid antibodies and thyroid function may even return to normal within 3-6 months! If not, we may need to dig deeper…

Treatment: Pretty straight forward… Testing for Celiac/gluten disease, and removing gluten from the diet

You can learn more about Gluten and related disorders from the Gluten Summit

Root Cause #2: Gluten Sensitivity and Cross Reactive Proteins

In addition to gluten sensitivity, individuals with Hashimoto’s may also be reactive to multiple other proteins including grains like rice, quinoa, and corn. Some experts, like Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly, claim that human beings did not evolve to eat  “grasses” like wheat, rice or corn.

Other individuals may also react to dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades...

Cyrex labs, ALCAT, Alletess labs offer additional testing options for food sensitivities.

Treatments of Choice: Testing, elimination diet, Paleo Diet, Autoimmune Paleo Diet, and in some cases a rotation diet may be beneficial. Working with a nutrition coach can be extremely beneficial in this respect. Supplements to help restore the gut lining may be beneficial as well.  Systemic enzymes may prevent reactions to new foods, and reduce reactions to current foods.

Two of my favorite cookbooks on these types of diets can be found here:

    Root Cause #3: Glutamine/Zinc Depletion

Zinc and glutamine are among the two substances that are required for rebuilding intestinal lining. In times of stress, the body will pull these substances from our intestines and uses them for other things, such as production of adrenal hormones.

In most cases, these substances become available to us through food, and things go back to normal after the stressful time is over, and the gut lining is rebuilt with new ingredients.

This becomes an issue for those under prolonged stress, those with low stomach acid (which is needed to extract zinc from proteins), and those that follow a diet low in animal protein, including vegans and vegetarians, as glutamine is primarily found in animal protein (including eggs and dairy).

Some individuals who followed vegan/vegetarian diets and then introduced animal proteins back into their diets have been able to put their Hashimoto’s in remission. I believe this is because the glutamine and other ingredients allowed them to rebuild their gut lining.

Solutions for this root cause: glutamine supplements, zinc supplements, bone broths, gelatin, well-cooked meats, Betaine with Pepsin (digestive enzymes to extract zinc from food), and any of the nutrient dense diets listed in this blog post.

Note: Other nutrients like Vitamin D are also required for proper gut barrier function. Most of these interventions and supplements will help for just about everyone with Hashimoto’s. I maintain a list of recommended supplements here.

    Root Cause #4: Parasite

You may think that parasites are only present in malnourished third world countries. Not so. Depending on the sources, 30-70% of Americans may be infected with parasites.  Current detection methods miss many parasites, and honestly, how many of you have been routinely tested for parasites?

A parasite found in the intestines can cause a tremendous amount of damage and has the ability to cause intestinal permeability, food sensitivities and autoimmune disease. If you are someone who developed your condition after a period of intense stress, I urge you to get tested, as stress makes us more susceptible to parasites.

Unfortunately diets are a short-term fix. People with parasites have multiple food sensitivities, that don’t go away no matter what they eat or don’t eat. A person may feel better initially after removing sensitizing foods, only to start feeling worse once new foods become reactive. You can be on the perfect diet, and take loads of supplements, but if you have a parasite, it doesn’t matter; you will not be able to fully recover.

There are many different types of parasites, including worms, amoebas and protozoa. Different treatments work for different parasites, thus while general parasite cleanses can sometimes help, I prefer to figure out the specific type of parasite through advanced testing, such as the GI Effects Profile or BioHealth Labs 401H test.   For parasites in autoimmune disease, I take the approach “guilty until proven innocent”, as I have seen many people with 5-10 negative tests for parasites finally come up positive on one of the above mentioned tests.

You can order the GI Effects Profile here:  (note link may expire) and you can order the BioHealth Lab test through a functional medicine practitioner. You can learn more about the functional medicine approach to thyroid here.

Temporary Fix: probiotics, low carbohydrate diets and diets such as the Autoimmune Paleo Diet will make it easier for us to tolerate the parasite symptomatically, but will not result in elimination of the parasite or the autoimmune condition.

Solution: antiparasitic herbs tailored to the parasite, specific antiparasitic medications, certain supplements, the probiotic S Boulardii and low carbohydrate diets will help as well.

Root Cause #5 Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

SIBO is an overgrowth of bacterial in the small bowel, or small intestine. This overgrowth can be caused by antibiotic overuse and starchy foods, among others. The SIBO results in intestinal permeability as the body tries to get rid of the excess bacteria.

Testing: Basic breath testing for SIBO can be self ordered by patients from this company, and gastroenterologists and major Academic Treatment Centers will have access to advanced diagnostic tests.

Treatment options: antibiotics, antimicrobial herbs, elemental diet and diets like the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Low FODMAPS diet and GAPS diet are the treatments of choice for SIBO.

You can learn more about SIBO at an upcoming SIBO conference. Sign-up information can be found here.

    Root Cause #6 Fungal Infections

The fungus Candida can cause intestinal permeability and has been implicated in autoimmune disease and food sensitivities. Liz Schau, holistic nutritionist was kind enough to share her Hashimoto’s remission story after overcoming Candida. You can read her story here

Testing: Gut testing such as the GI Effects profile may help determine if there is an overgrowth of Candida in the bowels.

Treatment:  Probiotics, anti-fungal herbs and medications, anti-candida diet such as the Body Ecology Diet. You can read more about diets and my experience with Body Ecology here

    So what’s your root cause?

I encourage you to Dig at it! It’s not always the same for each person, and I wrote my book to help you figure that out!  I cover each of the above mentioned root causes in great detail and provide much  more information on many additional root causes, and how to find yours.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of my book yet, I hope that you will consider getting going into the New Year. In January 2011, I decided to take charge of my health and I am so glad that I did. Wishing you all the best in your health journey!

Genetically modified crops threaten organic farm land

Posted by: Allison Reed, staff writer in GMO Dangers December 24, 2014 0

(NaturalHealth365) Genetically modified crops are a contentious topic in Washington as people all over America and around the world are demanding the ban of GMOs in foods. The presence of GMOs has virtually taken over the United States food industry since they were introduced in 1996, gradually becoming an increasing threat to the environment and consumer health.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, genetically modified crops are planted on approximately 150 million hectares of farmland around the world, with the United States being the largest producer of GM crops.
In the past, consumers who wished to avoid foods with GMOs could simply shop organic, as organic food sources are not supposed to be genetically modified in any way. However, there is now growing concern over the effects of widespread genetic food engineering contaminating crops grown on organic farm land and what it may mean for the future of organic farming.
The cold reality about GMOs and the threat of ‘cross-contamination’
Generally speaking, organic farmers go to great lengths to prevent their crops from being contaminated by nearby GMO crops, but they are unable to completely prevent contamination from cross-pollination or drift. Unfortunately, cross-contamination is not only exposing consumers to GMOs, but it is also presenting an economic burden on non-GMO and organic farmers.
According to a study from the Food & Water Watch and the Organic Farmers’ Agency for Relationship Marketing (OFARM), genetically modified crops pass their transgenes to nearby organic crops, causing non-GMO farmers added labor and expenses. They spend more money and work longer hours to protect their crops, yet many are still unsuccessful in preventing GMO contamination. Some even face organic crop rejections despite taking painstakingly difficult preventative measures to protect their farm lands.
The financial burden of cross-contamination lies squarely on the shoulders of organic farmers, as GMO crop producers are under no legal obligation to mitigate these expenses. Farmers seem to be fighting a losing battle against genetic food engineering, as federal courts have stripped them of the right to force GMO farmers to pay for their losses. This not only drives up the cost of organic foods, but it also eliminates any incentive GMO food producers may have had to avoid cross-contamination.
Is it really possible to avoid GMOs?
GMO contamination is a growing problem that is only getting worse with each planting season. It seems that the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. government, and United States Department of Agriculture are far more concerned with shielding the financial interests of the agriculture industry than protecting the health of the American public. They claim GMO foods are ‘safe’ despite the fact that genetic engineering is a radical and dangerous technology founded on baseless scientific theory.
If the government really wanted to protect consumer health, they would invest more resources into preventing cross-contamination between GMO and organic farm land and allow organic farmers to legally pursue the resources necessary to protect their crops. Better yet, they would ban genetic food engineering altogether.
Unfortunately, it isn’t enough to simply shop ‘organic’ anymore. Most of the corn and soybeans grown in the U.S. are genetically modified, as are many other crops. Even cows are now injected with genetically modified hormones banned by other countries.
Bottom line, we need more consumers to demand restrictions on GMO farmers, statewide GMO labeling laws and the eventual ban of GMO foods throughout the world.
Our challenge, today, is to never give up; tell everyone we know about the dangers of GMOs and take steps to protect our family by shopping for organic foods that have gone through rigorous testing to be verified as non-GMO.
Best of all, shop locally and help support the growing organic food movement. Get to know your local farmer and, better yet, start growing some of your own foods. Together, we can create a brighter world for ourselves and future generations.

Can a dental infection cause a massive heart attack?

(NaturalHealth365) For literally hundreds of years now, the idea that one or more focal infections in the body could seed, initiate, and promote virtually all chronic degenerative diseases has been hotly debated in the medical and dental communities, often with much more passion and hyperbole than with science.
This “debate” continues today, and nothing encapsulates this focal infection link between the mouth and the body better than the root canal-treated tooth. And while the root canal-treated tooth is certainly not the only significant source of dental infection and toxicity, it is easily the most devastating one – as you will soon see.
What is the goal of a root canal procedure?
The “success” of a root canal-treated tooth for a given individual depends on the goal of the root canal procedure. If the goal of a root canal procedure is to retain a pain-free natural tooth for both esthetic and chewing function, then the root canal procedure is frequently successful.
Considered in strictly a dental/mechanical context, few procedures in dentistry are so beneficial. Typically very painful and grossly infected teeth are restored to a mechanically sound state, free of obvious infection and any significant symptoms. Without the root canal procedure, the only real option, in modern dentistry, for most such teeth is extraction – an option that most dentists and patients want to avoid at all costs.
However, when the health of the rest of the body is the paramount consideration, few, if any procedures in dentistry or medicine, can undermine good health and shorten longevity as effectively as root canal-treated teeth. Both the dentist and the patient should fully realize the potential negative impact of having a root canal procedure in order to make the best and most informed decision for a treatment plan.
The true nature of a root canal procedure revealed
The only way to make an informed decision on whether to have a root canal treatment on a painful, infected tooth is to understand fully the nature of the procedure, as well as to be familiar with an increasing volume of scientific literature directly examining its clinical and pathological impact throughout the body. The “old issue” of the root canal-treated tooth being the classic example of a focal infection causing dramatic pathology throughout the body now has very strong, new support in the dental and medical literature.
With rare exception, the root canal procedure is performed to relieve acute or chronic pain resulting from an inflamed and infected pulp and root tip. The procedure itself then involves removing the pulp tissue with all the associated nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, widening and shaping the root canal space, followed by the insertion of a filling material into the hollow canal space. Also, identifiable abscesses at the root tip are drained as part of the procedure.
The literature now clearly demonstrates that while the root canal procedure might acutely remove most, if not all of the infected pulp tissue, it simply never sterilizes it. Residual bacteria will always remain in the accessory canals, dentinal tubules, or remnants of pulp tissue.
This really should not come as a surprise, as the physical matrix (pulp) on which the immune system depends to gain access to the infection inside the tooth has been removed. The microscopic dentinal tubules then harbor whatever pathogens were present indefinitely, typically producing a steady supply of enormously potent toxins that result whenever oral aerobic organisms remain trapped in an anaerobic environment, like the inside of the tooth.
And to make matters worse, the venous and lymphatic drainage at the base of the root canal-treated tooth remain intact, meaning that every time the individual chews on such a tooth, pathogens and toxins are injected directly into the circulation, just as a hypodermic needle might inject its contents directly into the vein.
Scientific research that remains unseen by most dental patients
Recent studies have been compelling in establishing the link between root canal-treated teeth and coronary heart disease, and the totality of the studies make it hard to avoid the clear-cut conclusion that root canal-treated teeth are one of the primary contributors to the cause and progression of heart disease in many individuals. Even the Journal of the American Dental Association, in 2009, reported that individuals with root canal-treated teeth had more coronary heart disease than those without root canal-treated teeth.
Apical periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that share the same pathogen profiles as are seen in root canal-treated teeth, has been found to seed those same pathogens directly into the coronary arterial wall, directly into the atherosclerotic plaque, and directly into the clots that acutely form to cause coronary artery obstruction and heart attack. Also, studies have now demonstrated the significant role that toxins from those same pathogens play in the evolution of atherosclerosis leading to heart attack.
Would you bet your health on the mindset of conventional dentistry?
It does not appear that any amount of data will convince the vast majority of conventionally-trained dentists, performing root canal procedures on a regular basis, that this procedure is one of the primary reasons for a patient eventually sustaining a heart attack – even years later. However, the data is what the data is.
Examine it, try to find a dentist who is at least open to discussing these issues, and make as informed a decision as possible before proceeding with a root canal procedure, if you feel it must be done. The root canal procedure is not the only “option” for an infected, painful tooth, and you need to be fully aware of all of these options. You need to save your health, and your life, as well as your smile.
