With the winter season looming for many of us, our thoughts start to drift towards warming foods and recipes that can not only fill us up but also help fight the inevitable colds and flu that start circulating through schools and homes. The trick is finding recipes that you and the family will love, that have sufficient anti-bacterial and viral activity to actually ward off infections and help remove them should they try and take hold.
In this vein, here are two seasonal, warming, and infection fighting soups that are easy to make and delightful to the taste buds.
Curried Butternut Squash Soup
This delicious soup provides the seasonal flavour of squash and combines it with a variety of warming vegetables and spices, to create a meal that is high in vitamin C and loaded with antibacterial and viral qualities. Make a big batch, because it will go fast!
Ingredients
  • 1 medium butternut squash
  • 3 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp of minced fresh ginger root
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 4 cups organic chicken broth
  • 2 ripe pears, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/2 cup of coconut milk
Directions
  • Preheat oven to 375F (190C)
  • Cut squash in half lengthwise; discard seeds and membrane.
  • Place squash halves, cut sides down, on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Roast in preheated oven until very soft, about 45 minutes.
  • Scoop the pulp from the peel, and reserve.
  • Melt coconut oil in a large soup pot over medium heat.
  • Stir in the onion, garlic, ginger, curry powder, and salt.
  • Cook and stir until the onion is soft, about 10 minutes.
  • Pour the chicken broth into the pot, and bring to a boil.
  • Stir in the pears and the reserved squash, and simmer until the pears are very soft, about 30 minutes.
  • Pour the soup into a blender, filling the pitcher no more than halfway full. Hold down the lid of the blender with a folded kitchen towel, and carefully start the blender. Puree in batches until smooth.
  • Return the soup to the pot, stir in the coconut milk, and reheat if necessary.
Squash Ginger Soup
This soup also incorporates the seasonal vegetables of squash and carrots with the zing of ginger, to deliver a jolt of vitamin C, carotene, along with the antibacterial and viral qualities of ginger. If you like a spicier soup, this will hit the spot!
Ingredients
  • 1-2 tbsp organic extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1 acorn or butternut squash, skinned and chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 2 celery sticks, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • Large piece of ginger root (3 inches long)
  • Spring or filtered water
  • Sea salt to taste
Directions
  • Sauté carrots, onions, celery, and garlic in coconut oil.
  • Add squash and ginger.
  • Cover with filtered or spring water.
  • Simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Puree and adjust water to desired consistency.
  • Add sea salt and simmer for 10 more minutes.

The world’s most ancient tree has something to teach us, and give to us, as far as promoting brain health and longevity goes.
Considering the fact that gingko biloba is the oldest known tree in existence (deemed for this reason a “living fossil“), isn’t it poetic how this plant has also been used to promote long life as both a food and medicine in traditional cultures as well?
Clearly, this plant has figured out a way to optimize longevity in face of many of the same adversities humans face, e.g. predators, infections, fluctuations in nutrient availability and climate, etc. And so, by consuming that plant, could it not lend some of its power and (phytochemical) wisdom to those imbibing it, as was commonly believed by ‘pre-scientific’ cultures throughout the world who considered plants their “allies”?




In ancient times, if something worked in practice, it was considered validated by that fact. This was no academic affair, as even a slight advantage or disadvantage in immunity or metabolism could translate into life or death consequences. Of course, they didn’t have the luxury nor means to employ randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trials, before trying out a medical intervention.
And yet today, we have the lens of science to plumb the depths of traditional approaches to healing, in order to ascertain the many ways a natural substance may protect against disease as well as the plausible mechanisms with which they do so. And this enterprise has gifted us with a massive database of information that can help us to attain even greater appreciation for the power of traditional medicine to not only heal, but do so in a way that is often superior to drugs within the conventional pharmacopeia. Gingko biloba, I believe, is an ideal example of this…
The Power of Ginkgo Biloba Revealed Through Science
The first time I really started to grasp Gingko biloba’s power to heal the brain occurred when I stumbled upon a 2006 paper published in the European Journal of Neurology which described a 24-week randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study showing an extract of this plant was as clinically effective as the blockbuster donepezil for mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease:
“Our study suggests that there is no evidence of relevant differences in the efficacy of EGb 761 [gingko biloba] and donepezil in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia, so the use of both substances can be justified. In addition, this study contributes to establish the efficacy and tolerability of the Ginkgo biloba special extract E.S. in the dementia of the Alzheimer type with special respect to moderately severe stages. “[i]
Amazingly, this was not the first study to ascertain significant medicinal properties in gingko biloba. In fact, if you peruse the database on Greenmedinfo.com on gingko you will find it has been studied to have value in over 100 different diseases, and has been identified to have at least 50 distinct beneficial physiological actions. Isn’t this amazing? Consider that the average FDA approved drug has 75 known adverse health effects for every purported health benefit.
Clearly, a plant with this much power to heal, including the ability to compete with a multi-billion dollar drug in ameliorating what is considered “incurable” neurodegenerative disease – Alzheimer’s disease – is worth exploring in greater depth.

As far as its brain regenerative properties, it has already been known that gingko can stimulate brain-derived neutrophic factor (BDNF), a protein found in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system which is essential in the regulation, growth and survival of brain cells. It is especially important for long-term memory. The ability to increase BDNF, therefore, implies it will improve brain and cognitive function. But this, alone, does not reveal the whole story on why gingko is so special, as a wide range of substances are capable of increasing BDNF, including coffee, grape seed extract, green tea, and even aerobic exercise.
Only recently a new mechanism behind gingko biloba’s brain and neurological tissue healing properties been revealed in the publication of an article in Cell and Molecular Neurobiology titled, “Ginkgo Biloba Extract Enhances Differentiation and Performance of Neural Stem Cells in Mouse Cochlea.”
In the new study researchers tested the premise that ginkgo biloba’s wide range of benefits in the treatment of neural damage and disorders is due, in part, to its ability to positively modulate neural stem cells (NSC), a subpopulation of cells within the brain that as multipotent cells are capable of generating the many different types (phenotypes) of cells that make up the brain. Their results, using mouse cochlea-derived neural stem cells, showed a number of ways that gingko biloba exact (GBE) resulted in a beneficial effect:
“Our data showed that GBE treatment promotes cell survival and NSC proliferation. In addition, GBE treatment also increases NSC differentiation to neurons and enhances the performance of mature neural networks evident by the increased frequency of calcium oscillation. Moreover, neurite outgrowth is also dramatically increased upon GBE treatment. Overall, our study demonstrates the positive regulatory role of GBE in NSC proliferation and differentiation into functional neurons in vitro, supporting the potential therapeutic use of GBE in hearing loss recovery.”
When one figures in the broad range of ways in which gingko can promote brain health, including increasing circulation to the brain, reducing brain inflammation and oxidative stress, increasing in BDNF, and now stimulating brain stem cell mediated neuronal regeneration and improved function, it may begin to provide practitioners with an ideal drug alternative in age-related neurological and cognitive problems.
It should be noted that neural stem cell stimulation and subsequent brain repair has also been observed in preclinical research with a little known component of turmeric known as ar-turmerone, which is found in whole turmeric but not in the increasingly popular 95% standardized curcumin extracts of turmeric. It is likely that many compounds we consume daily, also have brain regenerative properties. [Note: Gingko biloba seeds and to a lesser extent leaves contain naturally occurring gingkotoxin, which is a neurotoxin structurally related to pyroxidine (vitamin B6) and therefore capable of blocking its activity as an anti-vitamin. While the toxicological significance of gingkotoxin in leaves in the amounts found in dietary supplements is considered relatively insignificant, caution should be exercised in the selection of a brand. Ideally, the company is assaying gingkotoxin levels assuring the lowest possible level available.]

3 cups of stale bread, cut into cubes
1 cup of fattier sour cream
Procedure:

1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees. Cut off the tops (1/3) heads of garlic. Put the olive oil on the garlic and wrap it in silver foil. Bake in oven for 90 minutes and then leave it to cool.
2. While the garlic is in the oven heat two tablespoons of olive oil and butter in a pot over medium heat. Cook the red onions for about 10 minutes. Unwrap the garlic from the foil and put it with the cooked onions. Mix and add the diced thyme, the clear chicken soup and the bundle of fresh herbs (or dried).
3. Lower the temperature and add the little cubes of bread and then leave the whole mixture to simmer until the bread is soft.
4. Take out the bundle of herbs and put the resulting mix in a blender until you have a homogenous mixture. Put it back in the pot and add sour cream and a little salt if needed. Your healing soup is ready!

    – Ideal ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fats is between 1 to 1 and 4 to 1.

    * The average American consumes 20 times more omega 6 fats than omega 3 fats.

    – Omega 3 fats

    • The standard American diet (SAD) diet contains an over-abundance of omega 6 fats from:

    We’ve all heard the age old quote, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Now we say, “an avocado a day keeps the doctor away, forever!” and here are 5 reasons why.
    1. Avocados Won’t Make You Fat
    Fast food, chips, soda, white bread…those are all things that will make you fat, avocados…not so much. Avocados actually contain monounsaturated fat and, like olive oil, a high preponderance of oleic acid – this is a good fat and a beautifying oil. Oleic acid is gaining a reputation (through the Mediterranean Diet) as helping to keep us slim as we age. Oleic acid is also believed to decrease our chances of developing heart disease.



    2. Curbs Hunger
    If you find yourself constantly snacking, avocados can help change that. Studies have shown that meals that include avocados and other good fats cause you to feel full, taking away the need to eat more. Because they consist mostly of healthy fatty acids, they produce a blood-sugar, friendly, ketogenic effect. So the next time you reach for a bag of chips, go for the avocado instead.

    3. Packed With Nutrients
    You already know that avocados are good for us, but, what’s actually inside of it that makes it such a healthy treat. Well, for starters, there are typically over 14 minerals packed inside each one. Each avocado also contains:
    • 18 essential amino acids (protein) and 2 grams of protein per 100 grams of avocado.
    • Soluble fiber.
    • Phytosterols: beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol that may help keep arthritic and other forms of inflammation under control.
    • Carotenoids: Avocados contain an unusually high amount of antioxidant, oil-soluble carotenoids. These include: o-carotene, yellow alpha carotene and yellow lutein, but also many lesser-known carotenoids including yellow epsilon-carotene, yellow neochrome, yellow neoxanthin, yellow chrysanthemaxanthin, orange beta cryptoxanthin, orange zeaxanthin, and yellow violaxanthin.



    • Chlorophyll: This is what gives avocados their wonderful green glow. Chlorophyll is a deodorizer, detoxifier, and neutralizer of toxins.
    • Polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFAs): These are more widely prevalent in ocean plants but fairly unique among land plants—making the avocado tree (and its fruit) unusual in this regard. Like the avocado’s phytosterols, its PFAs also provide us with anti-inflammatory benefits and skin protection from ultraviolet radiation.
    • Vitamins: B (folic acid), C, E
    4. Can Be Added To Many Meals
    Avocados are awesome because they can be used to turn ordinary meals into super meals. Mash up some avocados and boom, you’ve got guacamole. Throw a few avocado slices on some hempseed or chia-seed gluten-free bread or raw cracker and you have a tasty snack. You can place avocados on top of almost any food.
    Avocados are great with sea salt or nearly any form of seaweed. Their high potassium content is balanced by the high sodium content of sea salt and seaweeds. Avocados are also wonderful in salads. More recently avocados have made their way into smoothie recipes. Of course, no guacamole is possible without its key ingredient.

    5. Long-Term Health
    So not only do avocados have tons of nutrients and are very delicious, but they also will benefit your health in the long run. Those good fats will help keep your blood sugar levels in check, your good cholesterol at optimum levels and can neutralize inflammation in the brain and body all while being a great energy source. What a replacement for meat and cheese.

    ] How to Make Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

    It’s apple season in many parts of North America which will continue through the Fall.  Time to take advantage of the seasonal bounty and make some raw apple cider vinegar! If you don’t have locally grown apples available in your community, a bag of organic apples from the healthfood store or veggie co-op will work just fine.



    Unpasteurized, or raw apple cider vinegar is expensive, so making your own is very thrifty.  A typical quart of organic, raw apple cider vinegar will run you just under $5 at most healthfood stores.  You can make a whole gallon, four times that amount, yourself for about the same price or even less if you use apple scraps that you were going to throw out or compost anyway.

    Which Apples Make the Best Raw Apple Cider Vinegar?
    A mixture of apples produces the best tasting and most healthful raw apple cider vinegar.
    If you are new to the process, try these approximate ratios for your first batch or two and then change it up from there to your own personal liking:
    • 50% sweet apples (Golden Delicious, Fuji (my fave), Gala, Red Delicious)
    • 35% sharp tasting apples (McIntosh, Liberty, Winesap, Northern Spy, Gravenstein)
    • 15% bitter tasting apples (Dolgo crabapples, Newtown, Foxwhelp, Porter’s Perfection, Cortland)
    In my neck of the woods, bitter tasting apples are hard to find.  If this is your predicament as well, simply increase the proportion of sweet apples to 60% and the sharp tasting apples to 40%. While the flavor of this mixture won’t be as complex as with the inclusion of some bitter apples, it will still taste fine.
    If all you have is a single apple tree in the backyard, however, feel free to use just that one variety to make your raw apple cider vinegar!
    Uses for Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
    The uses for raw apple cider vinegar are seemingly endless. It’s widely used in homemade tonics, recipes and even for cleaning.  I like to use it for an ACV detox bath (1 quart to a tubful of warm water). Friends of mine use raw apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse or for hair detoxing.



    The well known Master Tonic, a natural flu anti-viral, uses raw apple cider vinegar as the fermenting medium.  It’s also an essential ingredient in homemade bone broths.
    Pasteurized apple cider vinegar doesn’t have the same benefits as raw apple cider vinegar does as valuable vitamins, probiotics and enzymes are destroyed by the heating process.  If you are going to go to the trouble of making apple cider vinegar, always make it raw for maximum benefits.
    How to Make Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
    Makes approximately 1 gallon
    Ingredients 
    5 large apples of choice or the scraps of 10 apples
    Filtered water
    1 cup raw, local honey or organic cane sugar (find it here)



    Equipment
    1 wide mouth gallon glass jar (I like these)
    Cheesecloth or floursack cloth (I use these)
    Large rubber band
    Instructions
    Before you can make your raw apple cider vinegar, you must first make hard apple cider.  The alcohol in the hard cider is what transforms via fermentation into acetic acid, which is the beneficial organic compound that gives apple cider vinegar its sour taste.
    Nature is amazing!
    Wash the apples and coarsely chop into pieces no smaller than 1 inch.  Cores, stems and seeds may be included.
    Put the chopped apples into a 1 gallon, clean, wide mouth, glass jar.  The chopped apples should at least fill half the container and maybe a bit more.   If at least half the container is not filled, add additional apple scraps until you achieve this level as a minimum.
    Pour in room temperature filtered water until the chopped apples are completely covered and the container is just about full leaving a couple of inches at the top.
    Stir in the raw honey or cane sugar until fully dissolved.
    Cover the top of the glass jar with cheesecloth, a thin white dishtowel or floursack cloth and secure with a large rubber band.
    Leave on the counter for about 1 week, gently mixing once or twice a day.  Bubbles will begin to form as the sugar ferments into alcohol. You will smell this happening.
    When the apple scraps no longer float and sink to the bottom of the jar after approximately one week, the hard apple cider is ready.
    Strain out the apple scraps and pour the hard apple cider into a fresh 1 gallon glass jar or smaller sized mason jars of your choosing.
    Cover with a fresh piece of cheesecloth and secure with a rubberband.
    Leave on the counter in an out of the way spot for an additional 3-4 weeks to allow the alcohol to transform into acetic acid by the action of acetic acid bacteria (these are the good guys!). A small amount of sediment on the bottom is normal. In addition, a mother culture will form on top, similar to what happens when making kombucha.
    Taste your raw apple cider vinegar to determine if it is ready starting after 3 weeks.  If it has the right level of vinegar taste for you, strain it one more time and store in clean, glass mason jars or jugs.  If after 4 weeks, the taste still isn’t quite strong enough, leave it for another week and try again.  If you accidentally leave it too long and the taste is too strong, just strain and dilute with some water to a level of acidity that pleases you.
    Use as desired and store in the pantry out of direct sunlight.
    Raw apple cider vinegar doesn’t go bad, but if you leave it for a long time, another mother culture will likely form on top.  This is fine, just strain it again if desired and dilute with a bit of water if the taste has become too strong.

    Introduction: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CML) cured
    Modern medicine has reveled for over a decade in the most stupendous advancement in the history of cancer therapy, a drug discovery that added decades to the lives of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) via a gene-targeted enzyme inhibitor. CML is the most common form of leukemia with around 5000 new cases diagnosed annually.
    Patients who only had a few miserable years to live while they endured the side effects of interferon therapy can now live a normal lifespan and some no longer need to take medication at all, the true definition of a cure. Yet there is a dark side to this success in the war against cancer that is the topic of this report.
    Pharmacology's success was short-lived as latent treatment resistance was encountered after 4-5 years of use. This resulted in an expanded search for new molecules to reduce drug-resistant CML with slightly altered versions of the original medication.
    Despite 3rd generation versions of the drug, the problem of treatment resistance persisted. So pharmacologists began a search for molecules that could be combined with the current medication and sensitize leukemic cells to die off. And that search has resulted in a horrific realization. That playing the current pharmaceutical game of developing patentable overpriced synthetic molecules to treat disease so as to produce billion-dollar blockbuster drugs not only results in the plundering of pooled health insurance funds but has also cost thousands of lives.
    It is now recognized that a molecule found in nature could possibly have saved more lives with far less side effects at greatly reduced cost than the class of synthetic drugs in wide use today.
    That lives have been needlessly lost by the insistence that only synthetic drugs are efficacious is a horror that is difficult to contemplate. Photographic evidence of this will be provided in this report.
    Tyrosine kinase inhibitors well documented
    In contrast to most newly introduced anti-cancer drugs that only prolong survival by a few months, Big Pharma glories in its one stupendous success in conquering cancer – the control of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (cancer of the blood) with a family of gene targeted enzyme inhibitors (tyrosine kinase inhibitors) that now achieve long-term cures and a near-normal lifespan despite some nagging but tolerable side effects.     The wonder drug involved is imatinib, trade name Gleevec. A recent report says "although the treatment with imatinib achieves complete hematological remission in at least 95% of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), total cytogenetic and molecular responses are relatively rare events… resistance to imatinib is a relatively common feature for patients with accelerated (disease)."

    Overall Survival of patients with CML treated with imatinib (Gleevec), interferon or chemotherapy. Chemotherapy delivers only a minimum effect on survival compared with no treatment. [Lasker Foundation]
    What causes CML?
    Researchers found a cancer gene called ABL, located on chromosome 9. Part of chromosome 9 fractures and translocates (transports) to chromosome 22 to bind with another gene to form what is known as the mutated Philadelphia chromosome. That other gene has been identified as the BCR gene. This ABL-BCR gene fusion is what fuels the cancer via over-activation of an enzyme called tyrosine kinase that causes white blood cells (lymphocytes) to grow and multiply incessantly. [Cancer Research UK 2012; Nature 1982] Therefore, tyrosine kinase inhibitors serve to treat and even cure this disease.

    Imatinib, featured on the front cover of Time Magazine, was hailed as the new magic bullet against cancer, not just leukemia. It was what one cancer research organization called "the dawn of targeted treatments."
    Consider imatinib's level of success:
    • The initial human clinical trials with imatinib (trade name Gleevec) achieved results that were unprecedented. Imatinib restored a normal white blood count in 53 of 54 subjects who were resistant to interferon treatment. This is rarely observed with any single molecule. [New England Journal Medicine 2001]
    • After two years of treatment 83% of study participants were alive, 75% showed no additional tumor progression. [New England Journal Medicine 2003] Imatinib therapy achieved estimated life expectancy of 15.3 years compared with 9.07 years for interferon treatment. [Cancer 2004] The median survival for CLL patients rose from 8-9 years to an estimated 25 years. [National Medical Journal India2014] The reported positive response to imatinib was 90% after 24 months. [Rinsho Byori 2004]
    • Imatinib was hailed as a significant advance in the treatment of chronic lymphoid leukemia, particularly because it avoided the ordeal of interferon therapy. [Journal Clinical Oncology 2003] The cost of this new drug was more than double that of interferon. [Cancer 2004]
    • Today patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia are projected to live 30 years from the date of their diagnosis, a far cry from the 3-5 year prognosis with conventional therapy.
    • With synthetic gene targeted molecules like imatinib, the disease is not cured but survival is prolonged to the point where many patients are living a normal lifespan. [Blood 2005; National Cancer Institute] As spectacular as this class of drugs is, they are not without side effect. One in three to one in four patients taking imatinib or any of its successors will experience nausea, muscle spasms, diarrhea, vomiting and swelling, rashes and headaches are not uncommon. [Institute Medical Education & Research]
    • The response rate to imatinib (Gleevec) for chronic myelogenous leukemia is ~85% with 68% of patients surviving 10 years. Yet ~40% of patients discontinue treatment due to resistance or intolerance. Big Pharma is said to be searching for the next "wonder drug" that will quell this type of cancer without failure. There are no approved second line treatments for patients with CML once these drugs fail. [Seeking Alpha 2012]
    This major advance in the war against cancer was dampened by unexpected drug resistance to imatinib and spawned many variations of inib" drugs (dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib, bafetinib, vemurafenib, erlotinib, gefitinib, crizotinib, ponatinib) with greater efficacy reported.
    Nilotinib (Tasigna) is an "inib" family drug that was poised to replace imatinib (Gleevec) once its patent expired. A Bloomberg News report in 2012 said the strategy was to "portray Tasigna as the best treatment on the market, so good that there will be talk about it being a cure." [FirstWord Pharma 2012]
    Another "inib" family drug, bosutinib (Bosulif), a 3rd generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been demonstrated to work when imatinib fails. [American Journal Health System Pharmacy 2015]
    Ponatinib (Iclusig) has been described as the only tyrosine kinase inhibitor "with the capability to counter the highly resistance mutation in leukemic cells." [Drugs Today2013]
    The FDA granted accelerated approval of ponatinib (Iclusig) in 2010 for newly diagnosed patients and had been approved for patients with treatment resistant disease in 2007. [National Cancer Institute 2013] But by October of 2013 a steady increase in the number of serious vascular occlusion (blood clotting) events and heart failure prompted the FDA to issue black box warnings. [Drugs 2014] This dampened the idea of ponatinib as the successor to imatinib.
    The R&D challenge that still remains is how to overcome imatinib resistance that arises in about 15% of patients within 5 years of diagnosis. Drug resistant CML has been tracked down to a stubborn gene mutation identified as T3151. [Japanese Journal Clinical Oncology 2015]
    Another goal is to increase the number of patients who can cease taking drugs altogether because they have undetectable leukemia. Around 30-40% of CML patients remain free of their disease for up to 2 years following cessation of imatinib. [Neoplasma 2015; British Journal Haematology 2014]
    The terrible cost
    While imatinib's success in prolonging life is measured in decades versus earlier cancer drugs that only added a few months to survival, it is very costly. Its price rose from ~$30,000/year in 2001 to $76,000 in 2015. It only costs $200 to manufacture a year's supply of this miracle drug. [Huffington Post 2015; WBUR Sept 25, 2015]
    One 400-milligram imatinib pill a day is required for effective treatment. That amounts to $208 per pill/day (costs 46-cents to manufacture). Imatinib generated $4.7 billion in sales annually. [FirstWord Pharma 2012] It is estimated there are ~60,000 patients who take ematinib daily.
    Now that the patent on imatinib has expired, the drug company that owns the patent on imatinib bought off a competitor and delayed the entry of a generic version that would save a half billion dollars or more. [Wall Street Journal 2014]
    Enter resveratrol
    Over time it became clear that continued development and introduction of newly fashioned "inib" drugs was not going to remedy the problem of drug resistance. Big Pharma needed to go in another direction - how to make leukemia cells more sensitive and less resistant to "inib" drug treatment.
    A key finding is that resveratrol strongly addresses imatinib resistant leukemia cells. While imatinib kills off imatinib-sensitive leukemic cells it does not inhibit drug-resistant cells. Resveratrol doubled the sensitivity of leukemic blood cells in imatinib-sensitive cells, so resveratrol is not just to be confined to treatment of drug resistant cells. Researchers characterized resveratrol's ability to quell leukemia as having "remarkable efficiency to induce cell death in treatment resistant cells." [FASEB Journal 2008]
    In 2010 a landmark report convincingly showed that resveratrol induces programmed cell death in both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant CML cells. [Cancer Research 2010]
    Resveratrol is that widely extolled red wine molecule that has been widely researched but largely confined to animal studies rather than human use. A researcher who dared to bring resveratrol to the fore to prevent mortal heart attacks was falsely accused of scientific fraud and the stress of it led to his early death and threats to the nutraceutical company that offered such a pill. [Resveratrol News 2015]
    Resveratrol has been documented to independently succumb chronic myeloid leukemic cells. There is scientific discussion as to whether resveratrol kills off leukemic cells via its toxic effects or its ability to non-toxically induce cell death via a biological process called apoptosis (programmed cell death). [Biochemical Pharmacology 2004]
    In one study imatinib induced 50-60% of leukemic cells to die off via apoptosis (programmed cell death). [Cancer Biology & Therapy 2007] For comparison, resveratrol alone induced apoptosis in 43% to 59% of in both drug sensitive and drug-resistant forms of myeloid leukemia cells. [Anticancer Research 2012]
    There is compelling evidence that resveratrol induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in many types of cancer cells tested in a lab dish. [Cancer Research 2010] For example, resveratrol-induced apoptosis of human chronic myeloid (K562) and acute lymphoblastic (HSB-2) leukemia cells
    Over a decade ago researchers reported that resveratrol is a promising molecule for chronic leukemia by virtue of its ability to inhibit treatment resistance and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) as well as inhibit anti-apoptotic proteins. [British Journal Haematology 2002]
    Both resveratrol and quercetin, another natural molecule found in red apple peel and red onion, block growth of chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells in a lab dish via their ability to induce programmed cell death (apoptosis) and slow down the cell renewal cycle, thus giving more time for genetic mutations to be repaired. [Hematology 2013]
    Resveratrol's biological mechanisms were more clearly documented over time. By virtue of its ability to activate a cell energy-sensing molecule called AMPK, resveratrol inhibits the enzyme (tyrosine kinase) that drives the growth of leukemic cells. [Oncotarget 2011]
    In a newly published study, compelling photographic images are presented below which show that resveratrol alone, not in combination with imatinib, kills of leukemic (K5562) cells even more effectively than imatinib. [Genetics & Molecular Research2015]

    3. Treatment with resveratrol

    The authors of this landmark study write: "the combination of imatinib and resveratrol may be a more effective strategy for human CML therapy. The combination of imatinib and resveratrol represents a paradigm shift in cancer drug development. This may result in a new generation of specific targeted therapies for the numerous malignant conditions for which no efficient drug therapy is currently available." [Genetics & Molecular Research 2015] Yet their data and blood slides reveal resveratrol is also very effective when used alone. Researchers can't make their lips say what has now become clear – resveratrol is superior to the entire family of "inib" drugs.
    There is nothing keeping physicians from combining resveratrol with "inib" drug therapy among terminal patients with progressive leukemia, to be used on a compassionate care basis. FDA approval is not necessary. Resveratrol is a widely available dietary supplement that has not produced notable serious side effects in the past 10 years over a wide range of doses. Why all the foot dragging?
    In the 1990s pharmacologists had screened hundreds of molecules for one that would inhibit tyrosine kinase. They must have bumped into resveratrol in that screening. It has been known since 1993 that resveratrol strongly inhibits tyrosine kinase. [Journal Natural Products 1993]
    Why had resveratrol remained in the research closet so long?
    An authoritative report says: "Surprisingly, despite promising in vitro (lab dish) and in vivo (lab animal) effects, resveratrol has not yet been analyzed as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia." [FASEB Journal2008]
    Don't tell us that all along resveratrol has been a more viable alternative to imatinib. Don't tell us that thousands of CML patients met their premature death while pharmaceutical companies schemed how to profiteer ahead of providing a cure. This is a horror story, a story of greed over cure.
    Dose of resveratrol
    The concentration of resveratrol required to inhibit the growth of leukemia cells has been determined and is achievable via oral consumption.
    In various lab dish studies resveratrol has been demonstrated to be effective in killing off leukemic cells at a concentration ranging from 25-160 micromole per milliliter. [International Journal Clinical Experimental Pathology 2010; FASEB Journal 2008;Biochemical Pharmacology 2004; Anticancer Research 2012]
    One study shows that every 25 milligrams of oral resveratrol equates with a 2-micromole rise in blood levels in humans. To achieve a 25- micromole/milliliter blood concentration about 250-325 milligrams of resveratrol would be required for a 160-lb (70 kilogram) person. This would make a good starting dose for human clinical use.
    Excessive resveratrol dosing can produce reversible side effects such as Achilles heel tendonitis, headaches, anxiety reactions, racing heart and flu-like symptoms. Loose stool is sometimes experienced when using less pure forms of resveratrol derived from giant knotweed due to its emodin content. So mega-dosing is not recommended.
    While leukemic patients may be dying needlessly modern pharmacology is predictably attempting to develop a synthetic analog (look-alike) of resveratrol that can be patented to combine with "inib" drugs. [International Journal Oncology 2007; Molecular Pharmacology 2015] Big Pharma must profiteer before it cures.
    The bogus claim that resveratrol is not biologically available will aired as the reason to develop synthetic resveratrol analogs. Resveratrol is bound to detoxification molecules as it passes through the liver in the blood circulation thus rendering it temporarily unavailable. However, these liver metabolites (resveratrol conjugated with sulfate or glucuronate) are biologically active in themselves and sometimes exceed the activity of unbound (free) resveratrol.     Resveratrol variably induces cell death
    Remarkably, resveratrol variably induces apoptosis depending upon the tissue and its biological state. In an experimental model of heart attack resveratrol inhibited programmed cell death (apoptosis), thus preserving more heart muscle cells and reducing scarring (fibrosis). [PLoS One 2010] Resveratrol also inhibits apoptosis (programmed cell death) in brain cells during periods of oxygen deprivation (stroke) but activates apoptosis to selectively kill off brain cancer cells. [Neuroscience Letters 2003;International Journal Clinical Experimental Medicine 2015; Journal Neurooncology2007] As already presented in this report, in leukemic white blood cells resveratrol increases the die off (apoptosis) of leukemia white blood cells (lymphocytes). [Annals Hematology 2011]
    The future
    What more do the drug companies know that they aren't telling us about? For sure, they must know more about why some patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia don't need to take tyrosine kinase inhibitors any more. However, knowing how to effect a complete cure without the need to take drugs would be counterproductive to the drug industry.
    The process that leads to a full cure surely must have something to do with what is called epigenetic imprinting of genes involved in enzyme (tyrosine kinase) activation. [IntechOpen.com 2012]
    It is known that a biological process called methylation, in this instance hypomethylation, causes chromosomal instability and translocations and deletions of genes and loss of genetic imprinting. Methylation is a biological process by which methyl groups are added to DNA.
    Dietary factors can increase methylation and reduce over-activation of malignant genes. Vitamins like B12, B6, folic acid and betaine are methyl donors. Royal jelly from the bee hive is also a strong methylating agent. [EMBO Reports 2011] The lack of vitamins and other nutrients that control methylation can lead to the translocation of genes, as observed in acute myelogenous leukemia, that results in uncontrolled malignancies. [Leukemia 2014] Though there is some doubt that methylation controls translocation of the ABL-BCR gene involved in CML. [Leukemia 2014; Epigenetics In Cancer 2013]
    Inherited aberrant metabolism of folate (vitamin B9) is associated with relapse among patients with CML. [Clinical Cancer Research 2004]
    Over 15 years ago it was found that niacin (vitamin B3) induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in human CML cells. [Bioscience Biotechnology Biochemistry 2000]
    There is recent evidence that antioxidants such as vitamin E could be utilized with drugs like imatinib to reduce treatment resistance via inhibition of ABL-BCR gene mutations. [Leukemia 2014]
    It has been reported that the combination of vitamin A + vitamin E induce programmed cell death (apoptosis) in leukemic cells. [Molecular Cell Biochemistry 2008] CML patients are known to have low vitamin E levels. [Journal Association Physicians India2000]
    The combination of vitamin K + vitamin C inhibits growth of human chronic myelogenous leukemia cells by about 60% in laboratory mice. [Biochemical Pharmacology 2006]
    Low vitamin D levels have been linked to aggressiveness of leukemia. [Vitamin D CouncilHematology 2011]
    Vitamin C alone has been demonstrated to overcome imatinib treatment resistance in leukemic cells. [Experimental Hematology 2004]
    High stored iron levels (ferritin) are associated with higher incidence of relapse and poorer disease-free and overall survival among patients with acute myelogenous leukemia.     The un-believable cancer industry
    It is important to learn the cancer industry lives in a self-defined world of deceit. Recent criticism of the pharmaceutical industry includes the widely known fact that high-priced anti-cancer drugs often only add a few weeks to months to life. Yet even this reported marginal prolongation of survival often vanishes with assessment of overall survival rather than the narrower measure of cancer survival. Some new cancer therapies shrink tumors and appear to be advances but their mortal side effects often result in the more rapid demise of the patient from other causes, such as chemotherapy-induced heart failure or destruction of the immune system.
    Furthermore, there is sleight of hand in quoting longer survival times with cancer therapies that are only achieved by earlier detection of cancer. Earlier diagnosis when tumors are smaller only appears to add to survival time but is meaningless as most patients are dying on the same calendar day.

    The originator of imatinib foresees a future where molecular targets for each type of cancer are identified and synthetic drugs are then fashioned to treat each of them. [Nature Medicine 2009] But this approach suggests pre-cancer must be allowed to progress into full blown tumors, then diagnosed and treated, rather than development of a "drug" that would inhibit all forms of cancer, that is, prevent cancer. [Seminars Cancer Biology 2015] Resveratrol exhibits biological action against cancer that would require many different drugs to duplicate.     Fight Cancer & Detoxify with a Coffee Enema


    You might consider yourself a true “coffee lover” who knows all the coffee nutrition facts, but would you be willing to try an unconventional way of using coffee to improve your health? While drinking coffee has its well-documented benefits, that’s not the only way to reap the rewards of this antioxidant-packed beverage. While it might sound strange to inject the caffeinated liquid directly into your colon, research shows that coffee enemas are an effective way to to clean out the lower intestines and improve your health.
    Coffee enemas are known to help flush out bacteria, heavy metals, fungus and yeast (like those responsible for candida symptoms, for example) from the digestive tract, including the liver and colon, while also lowering inflammation — therefore helping people restore bowel function, increase their energy levels and heal from disorders that have caused them trouble for years.
    Before you start thinking that this sounds completely crazy, consider the fact that various types of natural detoxification treatments, including enemas, have been used for thousands of years to help restore digestive function and general health. Some were even mentioned in ancient historical scripts like The Dead Sea Scrolls that described how Jesus used ordinary ingredients and materials, like food and water, to help heal illnesses. (1)
    Various types of natural enemas, even fecal transplants or other ways of unconventionally restoring gut health, are growing in popularity as more people realize that laxatives and prescriptions fail to address the underlying cause of digestive disorders.
    While still not exactly a mainstream way to fight illness, coffee enemas are nothing new. They’ve been around since the late 1800s and were used at the time to help speed up healing following surgeries or to combat cases of accidental poisoning. First made famous by the Gerson Institute in the 1950s, when it began using coffee enemas as a key to treating cancer patients, others are now turning to this procedure for various ailments that don’t respond well to traditional treatments or prescription medications.
    Today, doctors of functional and alternative medicines use coffee enemas as part of natural treatment protocols for fighting cancer, parasites, overdoses, constipation, liver dysfunction, candida virus, IBS and other digestive disorders.

    How a Coffee Enema Works
    How do coffee enemas work?  According to the Gerson Institute, they have the primary purpose of “removing toxins accumulated in the liver and removing free radicals from the bloodstream.” (2) And it’s not just the caffeine in coffee that is responsible for the benefits of coffee enemas; in fact, studies show that bioavailability of caffeine obtained from coffee enemas is about 3.5 times less than those obtained drinking coffee orally.     It’s well known that coffee beans naturally contain antioxidants and beneficial compounds, including cafestol palmitate, kahweol, theobromine, theophylline in addition to caffeine, that have positive effects on inflammation levels, including within the digestive system. (4)
    When ingested, compounds within coffee either from drinking it or from inserting coffee directly into the colon act like a cathartic that causes the colon muscles to contract. This helps move along stool through the digestive tract, resolving cases of constipation and making it easier to go to the bathroom.
    As you’re probably aware, regular bowel movements are beneficial for carrying waste and toxins (like heavy metals or excess fatty acids) out of the body. Research has shown, then, during a coffee enema caffeine and other compounds travel via the hemorrhoidal vein to the liver. Coffee opens up blood vessels, relaxes smooth muscles that help with bowel movements and improves circulation. Once it makes its way to the liver, coffee is also believed to help open up bile ducts and increase production of bile that’s needed for proper digestion and excretion. (5)
    Researchers from the University of Minnesota also demonstrated that coffee enema benefits might include being able to help stimulate the production of a beneficial enzyme created in the liver called glutathione S-transferase, which acts like a antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and natural blood cleanser.     Benefits of a Coffee Enema
    1. Increases Antioxidant Activity
    Coffee enemas are believed to increase production of glutathione S-transferase above normal levels. As functional medicine practitioner and pharmacist Suzy Cohen points out, people pay good money for glutathione in supplement form, so having the ability to produce more on your own is pretty valuable!     What makes this enzyme so powerful is its ability to scavenge free radicals within the digestive tract that contribute to bodywide inflammation, poor gut health, liver disease and cellular damage. Once free radicals are neutralized, bile that is produced from the liver and gallbladder carries these substances out of the body through bowel movements.
    2. Used to Fight Cancer
    Max Gerson, M.D., author of “A Cancer Therapy,” which was published in 1958, has successfully used coffee enemas in thousands of cancer patients. (8) Dr. Gerson made coffee enemas famous as a natural cancer treatment when he pioneered the use of a special anti-inflammatory diet combined with nutritional supplements and daily enemas for speeding up detoxification.
    According to the National Cancer Institute, an organic vegetarian diet plus pancreatic enzymes and coffee enemas were the main features of the Gerson Therapy that intended to build up the immune system of cancer patients and restore electrolyte balance (such as levels of potassium in cells). (9) Many of his patients were able to stop their pain medications and help restore liver function and tissue repair by performing sometimes up to six coffee enemas per day.
    3. Improves Detoxification
    Acting similarly to “a form of dialysis of the blood,” coffee enemas help remove unwanted materials from the gut wall and bloodstream. Dialysis is considered a forced or artificial method to enhance detoxification, and that’s exactly what coffee edemas do since they help the body expel waste materials. The primarily role of the enema is to mechanically wash out the colon, removing potentially harmful parasites, bacteria, yeast and heavy metals that contribute to inflammation and therefore disease.
    There’s some evidence that coffee acts like a natural “astringent,” since it helps the top layer of skin or mucous membranes within the digestive tract peel off and rejuvenate (similarly to how astringents used on skin help with cell turnover). Some researchers believe that the top layer of mucous within the gut lining might hold a high level of toxins, and therefore, helping the body shed this lining speeds up the cleansing process.

    Constipation is one of the most common problems for adults, which is why laxatives are one of the most widely purchased over-the-counter medicines there is. If you’re one of millions of adults who struggle to poop regularly, you’ll be happy to know that coffee enemas provide natural constipation relief in several ways. First off, the increase in water that is inserted into the colon helps stimulate peristalsis in the gut, while a portion of the water also helps increase bile production.
    The mechanical effects of the enema cause the colon to become more active and facilitate the emptying of stool and removing of impacted feces, toxins and food residues that can cause constipation. Coffee might also help clean out diverticuli in the colon, which are slight openings in the colon wall that can cause left-behind food particles or bacterial organisms to become trapped.
    People usually experience the best results from coffee enemas when they also drink plenty of water and improve their diets, such as cutting out inflammatory foods like sugar, white refined flour and hydrogenated fats that can slow down digestion.

    How to Perform a Coffee Enema
    The good news is that coffee enemas can be assembled and performed easily and inexpensively at home in the comfort of your own bathroom (or wherever you choose). To perform a coffee enema at home, you need to purchase an enema kit along with fresh coffee beans. Enema kits can be found in certain health food or drug stores, and definitely online. There are several types available, from simpler versions that are sometimes called “traveler’s kits” to plastic bucket types that use gravity to help the enema work better. No matter the type you use, look for one that has a tube and nozzle attached to either a bucket or bag that hangs above you when you lie down.
    After choosing a enema kit, you need to purchase coffee beans. You want to purchase only certified organic coffee and regular (not decaf) beans that are free from all chemical sprays — this is important considering the quality of the coffee determines how effective the detoxification process will be. The last thing you want to do is directly insert chemicals into your digestive tract if you already deal with inflammation and dysfunction! Most people recommend keeping your coffee beans in the freezer until you’re ready to perform the enema so they retain the most antioxidants.
    As with all enemas, it’s best to do one immediately after having a bowel movement if possible, which makes it more comfortable, effective and easier to retain for longer. You can also do an enema even if you haven’t recently had a bowel movement (for example, if you’re constipated), but many people like to perform enemas in the morning directly after going to the bathroom.
    It’s recommended to do an enema about once weekly or up to once daily if you’re healing from a digestive disorder. In fact, in some cases very ill patients (for example, people healing from cancer) have used coffee enemas multiple times per day. If you choose to do coffee enemas frequently, you might want to consider buying a reusable enema kit and cleaning the nozzle with a natural detergent to save money.



    Once you have your materials prepared, here is a step-by-step guide to follow in order to perform a coffee enema safely:
    1. To make one enema, use a small pot on your stove top to combine coffee beans with filtered water. Filtered water is highly recommended by most experts and might offer fewer risks than tap water (which contain traces of minerals or chemicals). Add 2 tablespoons of organic coffee beans to your pot along with 3 cups of filtered water. Then bring to a boil and let simmer for 15 minutes.
    2. Let the mixture cool down to a little warmer than room temperature once it’s boiled for about 15 minutes. Strain the coffee beans from the mixture so you have one uniform liquid free from particles.
    3. You’re now ready to perform your enema, so choose a location that’s comfortable where you can lie down for about 15 minutes, such as the the bathroom floor with some towels. Most people like to be close to a toilet and keep extra towels on hand to clean up if need be. Wherever you choose to be, take your enema kit and place the bucket or bag at least 1 meter above you and the ground. So if you’re lying on the floor, you might try hanging the bucket or bag on a towel rack, shower rail, etc. This helps gravity push the coffee liquid down faster so it’s better able to enter your digestive tract and do its job.
    4. Pour your coffee liquid into the enema bag or bucket and hold the tube and nozzle shut. Locate the lever on the tube and nozzle that helps you stop and start the flow of the enema. Before beginning, make sure the valve is shut so no liquid escapes. Use a lubricant such as coconut oil to coat the tip of the enema nozzle, which will make it easier to insert into your rectum without being uncomfortable. Lay down on your right side in fetal position and insert the nozzle into your rectum, aiming for it to be about 1 inch inside.
    5. Use the valve that helps you to start the flow of coffee and keep the liquid slowly entering your rectum through the nozzle until the bag or bucket is emptied. Take your time and squeeze in so the liquid doesn’t escape as much as possible. Sit however you are most comfortable that helps you keep the coffee inside of you for about 12 to 15 minutes — 15 minutes is the max time that you need to effectively cleanse your system, so at this point you can stop holding in and can go to the bathroom.

    Risks and Potential Side Effects of a Coffee Enema
    The Institute of Digestive Disease and Nutrition at the University of Korea has studied the effects of coffee enemas in various patients and reports that people using coffee enemas don’t usually experience any complications or side effects. (11) Coffee enemas are considered a safe and feasible option for treating digestive dysfunction, and there were no clinically significant adverse events related to coffee enemas demonstrated at this time.
    If you’ve experienced complications from using enemas in the past, it’s best to talk to a doctor before trying to perform a coffee enema on your own. The first time you try a coffee enema it’s a good idea to do so under supervision or with guidance of a medical professional, although some people feel comfortable jumping right into the process. Coffee enemas aren’t usually recommended for pregnant women or children since they can be sensitive to the effects of caffeine.
    Still, all enemas come with certain side effects, including tears in the colon and dehydration or electrolyte imbalances if they’re over-performed. One way to make the process more comfortable is to always use a lubricant, go very slowly and to follow directions very carefully. Make sure you avoid burns and irritation by cooling the coffee liquid enough and straining it well.
    If you’ve experienced hemorrhoids or tears in the past, you might find inserting the nozzle painful and should not force the procedure. You also don’t want to perform more than one enema weekly until you monitor your reactions and make sure you aren’t experiencing any signs of  dehydration, such as dizziness, muscle cramps or weakness,  due to increased bowel movements. Drink plenty of water when using enemas to help flush your system.
