(NaturalHealth365) Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can have devastating consequences on our health. GMOs are not only toxic for human consumption but also inhibit (normal) cellular detoxification activity. Now, more than ever, it is important that you become well-informed about the food supply.
The body has a unique family of enzymes called cytochrome P450 (CYP) that play a critical role in the health of mammals. One of the critical roles of these enzymes is to detoxify the cell of xenobiotics and heavy metals.
Mounting evidence is showing that chemical agents found in a common herbicide inhibits the P450 enzyme complex and leads to cellular damage.
Mankind has access to unique technologies that have never before been accessible to us. Many of these things have allowed us to live with a better quality of life and improved efficiency in our daily lives. Some of these technological projects have been destructive and caused severe damage to the environment and human life.
Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are a newer technology that has spread throughout the modern world – in a short time – with little research of long-term efficacy.
”I’m against the theory of the multinational corporations who say if you are against hunger you must be for GMO. That’s wrong, there is plenty of natural, normal good food in the world to nourish the double of humanity. There is absolutely no justification to produce genetically modified food except the profit motive and the domination of the multinational corporations.” – Jean Ziegler, UN human rights envoy and special investigator on the right to food, “U.N. food envoy questions safety of gene crops”, Reuters, 15 Oct 2002
The biotech industry has focused on improving yields on food stuffs by using chemical and genetic technology to influence production. The technology includes genetically modifying normal crops such as wheat, corn, canola, sugar, soy and many others that have unique characteristics that allow them survival advantages. These companies also champion the usage of chemical pesticides and herbicides to maximize food stuff production.
What exactly is the danger of “glyphosate”?
The most popular herbicide worldwide is called Roundup, created by Monsanto, and it uses an active ingredient called glyphosate. Foods stuffs that are produced in fields that are sprayed by glyphosate carry residue of the chemical into the marketplace where they are consumed. In North America, bioengineered foods are ubiquitous and it is quite challenging for the average consumer to avoid them.
Glyphosate is an organophosphate petrochemical. It is well-established in the literature that organophophates inhibit the CYP enzyme complex in human liver cells. One of the critical enzymes is glutathione transferase which helps detoxify intracellular xenobiotics. Low levels of CYP enzymes complexes would result in a depletion of available glutathione and lowered capability of the organism to detoxify from various environmental poisons such as nitrates and benzene.
Have you heard about the importance of CYP enzymes?
CYP enzymes are present in most tissues and play a critical role in estrogen and testosterone production and metabolism, cholesterol synthesis and vitamin D metabolism. These enzymes are also extremely important for metabolizing many pharmaceutical drugs such as acetaminophen. The inhibition of CYP enzymes increases the likelihood of adverse drug reactions and biotoxic accumulation.
Retinoic acid is a metabolite of retinol (vitamin A) and helps to regulate the function of vitamin A for growth and development. Retinoic acid is metabolized by a CYP enzyme complex. Retinoic acid is necessary for developing neural differentiation and neuronal maturity cannot be achieved without effective CYP enzyme activity.
There have been reports of high rates of neural defects, craniofacial malformations and various other congenital disorders in children born in regions where glyphosate chemicals are used.
The connection between CYP enzyme inhibition and hormonal function
Since CYP enzyme activity also governs cholesterol synthesis and the production of key sex hormones that are crucial for development – it is also a major player in the epidemic of hormonal related disorders in North America. This would include dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, menopausal abnormalities, breast cancer, uterine/ovarian cancer, male andropause and prostate abnormalities.
Vitamin D production and utilization is essential for over 2000 genes and is a key player in immunity and brain development. Lowered vitamin D3 levels are associated with chronic inflammation, neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegeneration, cancer development and arteriosclerosis among other things.
How GMOs break down your immune system
Glyphosate’s inhibition of the CYP enzyme complex exponentially enhances the damaging effects of other food borne chemicals and environmental toxins within human tissue. This impact is insidious and presents itself slowly as chronic widespread inflammation that damages cellular systems throughout the body. The result is a weakened body that cannot adapt appropriately to an ever more increasingly toxic environment and chronic disease development.
Rats who were fed GM maise suffered multiple pathologies including enormous mammary tumors in females and liver plus GI and kidney diseases in males. Significantly larger rates of skin and liver cancers were also found in both sexes of rats fed GM maise compared to non-GM maize fed rats. This led to greatly increased suffering and early death for the GM fed rats.
GMOs contribute to the rapid rise in chronic disease within the modern world
The inhibition of the CYP enzymes leaves the liver and kidneys in a weakened state and unable to effectively detoxify environmental hazards such as nitrates, heterocyclic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene. The failure for the liver to adequately metabolize these poisons is a major contributing factor in cancer development.
“Modern” society has higher rates of congenital disorders, early childhood neural development abnormalities, immune disorders and chronic disease than ever before in the history of mankind. Environmental toxicity is the suspected causative factor. Research indicates that glycosophate and its delirious health effects including the inhibition of CYP enzyme activity are a major player. This is especially so when you consider the widespread usage of glycosophate residue in the modern North American diet.
The CYP enzyme inhibition is just one of many problems associated with glycosophate usage and genetically modified organisms in our agricultural environment and food supply. Other problems include altered sulfate metabolism, damage to the internal microbiome, chemical damage to the environment and its deleterious effects on natural life. The widespread usage of GMO’s are one of the most hazardous things mankind has done during this critical period of technological adolescence.
