Hyperglycemia is the technical term used to describe high levels of sugar in the blood. “Hyper” means high and “gly” means sugar. Sugar from food we eat is the primary source of energy used by the body for metabolic processes; therefore, we do need sugars…but what if our levels are too high? How can we lower blood sugar levels naturally?
Understanding The Problem First
Insulin is the only hormone in the body whose primary function is to lower blood sugar and is produced by the pancreas; all other hormones in the body function to increase sugar levels. Therefore hyperglycemia occurs because of two main reasons:
- The pancreas is defective that it could not produce insulin or it produces small amounts of insulin. Thus, the insulin cannot cope up with the amount of sugar in the diet which results to high blood sugar levels.
- The insulin itself produced by the pancreas is defective that its receptors cannot take up sugar. Thus, even if the body produces a lot of insulin, it’s not doing its job.
Hyperglycemia is not a disease itself but a precursor to other illnesses like heart diseas, kidney damage, eye problems and obesity. Furthermore, diabetes mellitus’ primary symptom, hyperglycemia is a traitorous disease.
A person won’t die of diabetes per se, but may by the complications brought by diabetes.
- It will render your immune system useless that it can’t even fight simple bacterial infections.
- It brainwashes your body to fight against you resulting to autoimmune disorders.
- As a result, you become prone to infections and diseases, and once infected, it takes a long time for you to recover even from a common flu.
Testing yourself for hyperglycemia and monitoring your blood sugar levels is important, especially if there is a history of diabetes mellitus in the family. Medications are often given to patients to control their sugar levels, but these risks can be avoided.
Tips To Lower Blood Sugar Levels
For those that want to control or lower their blood sugar levels naturally, without the necessary risks, here are some steps that can help you attain your goal. Exercise, healthy eating habits and supplements can assist you. Here’s how:
