EMF Health Effects

Harmful Health Effects of ElectroMagnetic Radiation

So if you watched this video, you know there IS something to worry about concerning EMF.
Exactly WHAT are these potential health dangers? Well, let’s start by talking about some of the diseases that some studies have shown can be caused by electromagnetic radiation:
Asthma. A study in California followed 626 children for 13 years. It found that magnetic fields greater than 0.3 mG (average) during pregnancy increased the child’s risk of getting asthma by age 13. A clear dose-response was found. For every 1mG increase in EMF there was a 15% increased rate of asthma in the children.
This means, for example, that children of mothers whose average exposure was 2mG during pregnancy were 3.5 times as likely to suffer from asthma during childhood. Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine – August 2011.
Salivary Gland Cancer. An Israeli study reports that people who used cell phones for 22 hours a month or more were 50 percent more likely to develop parotid gland cancer than those who used cell phones infrequently or never. Health24 February 19, 2008.
Brain Tumour. An analysis of several previous studies has concluded that cell phone use over 10 years causes an increased risk of acquiring certain types of brain tumour (2.4 times for acoustic neuroma and 2 times for gliomas). Pubmed – September 2007
Lymphatic Cancer and Bone Marrow Cancer.Researchers from the University of Tasmania and the University of Bristol studied records of 850 patients who had been diagnosed with lymphatic and bone marrow cancers. They concluded that people living within 300 metres of a high voltage power line for extended periods (particularly in childhood) were up to five times more likely to develop these diseases later in life. (Internal Medicine Journal September 2007.) Physorg.com August 24, 2007
Miscarriage. Researchers in California found that EMFs from electrical appliances (such as domestic vacuum cleaners, hairdryers and food mixers) could significantly increase the risk of miscarriage. New Scientist, January 2002.
Suicide. American researchers found that the rate of suicide among 5000 electricity utility workers who were exposed to extremely low frequency EMFs was double that of a control group of the same size. The effect was particularly noticeable among young workers. (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine March 15, 2000).UNC.EDU/news/archives March 2000.
These are some of the most serious known effects of EMF. Many other effects have been reported Yet more may be currently unknown, unconfirmed or unreported.

Summary of Electromagnetic Health Effects

Life-threatening Diseases

  • Alzheimer’sDisease
  • Brain cancer (adult and child)
  • Breast cancer (male and female)
  • Depression (also leading to suicide)
  • Heart disease
  • Leukemia (adult and child)
  • Miscarriage

Other Conditions and Symptoms

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Autism
  • Blood pressure (raised)
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Depression
  • Electro-sensitivity
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent infections
  • Headaches
  • Hormone changes
  • Immune system damage
  • Nerve damage
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Skin complaints
  • Sperm abnormalities
  • Tinnitus
This list is by no means complete. That’s because we all react differently to EMF stress.
If you have time (15 mins) watch this video presentation by Dr Magda Havas which shows not only harmful effects of EMF, but beneficial, healing uses for certain specific electromagnetic frequencies.

Cell Tower Health Effects

A survey study using a questionnaire was conducted in 2002 by Roger Santini (SeePubmed). The questionnaire was sent to 530 people living in the vicinity of cell towers (mobile phone base stations).
People who said they lived closer to a cell tower complained significantly more often – about a whole range of health issues – than those living further away. Here is a graph showing those results – which I can no longer find online, unfortunately – but the study is available on Pubmed. This image as presented here is a little hard to decipher, but I think you will get the gist of it.

Is this kind of “science” is too flimsy to be taken seriously by government organisations? I mean those authorities that publish lengthy reports concluding that there is insufficient reliable evidence to infer any definite health effects from current EMF exposure levels.
Personally, I would find this study convincing enough to recommend that we should all reduce our exposure to pulsed digital radio-frequency EMF, even if there were no other evidence. What do you think?

Bamberg Study

That Santini study was not the first time this kind of evidence had been published. In 2005 a group of doctors in Germany analysed the complaints of 356 patients, based on the amount of long term EMF exposure experienced by each patient. (I wish I knew how they determined that.)
They found that the higher his or her EMF exposure, the more likely a patient would be to experience a wide range of medical complaints, from minor problems (although health problems are never really minor) to major diseases – like heart rhythm disturbances, tumours, diabetes and hypertension. Their report concludes:
“This is further evidence to support the potential adverse health effects that may be synonymous with the pulsed Microwave technology that surround us in everyday life. Those in the medical profession are beginning to voice their concerns, and it is worth bearing in mind that they have first hand experience of real people with real problems. It is important not to discard this evidence due to lack of experimental control, as it seems that a number of qualified professionals have independently found the same trends. At the very least this should call for more organised research into these findings”. (See PDF document).
If small groups of people with very limited resources can gather this kind of evidence, why can’t larger organisations conduct similar research, but in a more rigorous manner, and on a much larger scale?

Who Can We Trust?

But who could we trust to look into this objectively? Any organisation with an interest in this field, and with the required funds, is already benefiting from the widespread deployment of this technology. So don’t let’s be taken in by their reassurances. Rather, keep an open mind until the evidence about EMF health effects satisfies everyone. (I believe it never will.)
In the meantime, let’s act with caution, and assume that there may be some fire behind all this smoke!
I hope YOU can still avoid EMF-related health effects. Fortunately, there are many ways you can reduce electromagnetic exposure for yourself, your family and others around you.
