First edible GM animal?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration may soon approve the first genetically modified animal for humans to eat – salmon. The GM fish can reportedly grow twice as fast as normal salmon, thanks to a modification that enables it to produce growth hormone in cold weather. According to the New York Times, the FDA may hold a public meeting this fall to discuss whether the developer, AquaBounty Technologies (who has been seeking approval for a decade) has enough data to ensure the salmon are safe, nutritionally equivalent to unmodified salmon, and safe for the environment. Another question: GM crops aren’t labeled as such in the U.S., but should this salmon be?
