Paul Campaign: GOP Insiders Engaging In “Shenanigans” To Prevent Congressman Winning


Points To “Substantial Irregularities” In Delegate Appointments

The Ron Paul 2012 campaign has officially complained of “substantial irregularities” in the appointment of delegates in a major Washington County.

In a letter to GOP leaders in Washington, the Paul campaign says it is suspicious of the way that precinct-committee officers (PCOs) are being selected in King County, which covers 2,600 precincts.

The Paul campaign suggested King County GOP Chairwoman Lori Sotelo may have engaged in “shenanigans” and may have violated party rules in appointing PCOs after the December deadline, claims that Sotelo denies.

Campaign lawyer David Warrington intimates that the GOP establishment may be attempting to prevent Paul from winning the caucuses by appointing anti-Paul activists as PCOs.

Warrington’s letter also notes that the King County GOP has refused to make the list of appointed PCOs public.

PCOs have the responsibility of running caucuses and as such are automatically appointed as delegates to the county and legislative-district conventions, which in turn make decisions on the allocation of Washington’s 43 delegates to the Republican National Convention.

As has been well documented, the Paul campaign is focusing on this aspect of the caucuses, rather than the so called “beauty contest” straw polls, much lauded by the media.

“Should this blatant attempt to corrupt the process continue in King County, or anywhere else, the Paul Campaign will pursue all of the legal remedies to ensure that the process is fair and legal and that the rights of citizens participating in the process are (not) violated,” Warrington writes.

Paul’s national campaign chairman Jesse Benton added that he was not surprised by “the shenanigans happening inside the King County Republican establishment.” adding that “all options are on the table, including the ‘nuclear option’ ” of disallowing King County PCOs to be seated at the national convention.

In comments to the Seattle Times, Sotelo and State GOP Chairman Kirby Wilbur called the concerns of the Paul campaign “conspiracy theories”, but refused to say how many PCO vacancies they had filled.

The GOP officials suggested that the Paul campaign is preparing excuses in the eventuality that the Congressman does not win the caucuses.

“I think they are looking for a way to discredit the process,” said Sotelo.

If the Paul campaign’s concerns turn out to be accurate, this would not be the first time that foul play has prevented a Paul victory during this election run. As we have extensively reported, questions over voting and the appointment of delegates have been raised in almost every state thus far.
