Ron Paul and the Politics of Thinking

April 17, 2012
Texas Congressman and Presidential Candidate Dr. Ron Paul’s upcoming visit to Cornell’s campus on Thursday, April 19 should be of special interest to students of Cornell and every other college and university. As the popular media begins to focus on November’s election contest between typical Democrats and Republicans, the Ron Paul “Revolution” charges onward, concerned, like most Americans, with the long-term direction of the country, not short-term partisan victories. As a result, Ron Paul’s recent trips to college campuses around the country drew not just Republicans and Libertarians, but thousands of energetic students from across the political spectrum, all yearning to hear a candidate with real, authentic convictions, not simply the approval of the political establishment. Or in other terms — when was the last time a Republican Presidential Candidate drew a crowd of thousands at UC Berkeley?
As members of the Cornell Democrats, Cornell Republicans and Cornell Libertarians, we think that Ron Paul’s message deserves our attention as individuals and college students first, without concern for our political affiliations.
For democrats, Ron Paul is a Republican with whom they share serious concerns about American foreign policy under both Bush and Obama. During the runup to the Iraq war, Ron Paul was one of the few dissenters in Congress during a time when patriotic fervor squelched most criticism. His presidential bid in 2008 largely reflected the absence of serious public discussions about the lack of accountability, military-industrial complex and long-term fiscal consequences of repeated American military interventions, epitomized by the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Almost a decade later, Americans are faced with a daunting 2012 federal deficit of greater than $1.3 trillion and we, as college students of the early 21st century, will pay for it. This reflects many democrats’ outrage that recent concerns about deficit spending never seem to apply to American military expenditures, which amount to a whopping 43 percent of the world’s total military spending.
For Republicans concerned about the federal deficit, 2012 Cornell Convocation Speaker Michael Bloomberg noted that “Except for Ron Paul, none of the presidential candidates has a credible plan for dealing with the nation’s deficit.” If recent austerity riots in Greece were not enough of a cautionary tale, we should consider the long-term consequences of an exploding federal deficit, a problem we can’t entrust to those currently in power. Republicans worry about the party’s future among youth and college students, but also about whether their candidates are committed to Constitutionalism, limited government and American values. Analyzing Ron Paul’s congressional record dating back to the 1970s provides almost archaeological proof of a lifelong dedication to making true his message of limited government. We absolutely know where he stands and that he won’t budge.
For libertarian supporters, the Ron Paul movement has often brought attention to serious issues long before their consequences were clear. A decade ago, few analysts or experts anticipated the housing bubble, the financial crisis and yearly federal deficits over $1 trillion. In comparison, Ron Paul warned of the bubble years in advance, when critics often dismissed him as the eccentric “Dr. No” for his unflappable opposition to any bill in violation of the Constitution. Since then, Ron Paul’s greatest achievement has been his success in fundamentally changing American political discourse and his ability to illuminate the subtle connections between social and economic issues. Breaking from the status quo on key issues has not been easy, but discussions about the Federal Reserve, the War on Drugs or the limitations of American military might are no longer as eccentric or taboo as they used to be. Even if his success has been limited in the voting booth, Ron Paul has widened public discussions enough that defending individual liberty is not the impossible task it once was.
Even so, a steady stream of critics have labelled Ron Paul as an “idealist” and “unelectable.”
Yet on issues like privacy, marriage, internet freedom and the War on Drugs, Ron Paul’s positions resonate not only with most college students, but with Americans in general. With regard to marriage, Ron Paul argues that instead of politicizing marriage, government should refrain from defining it, leaving such choices to private citizens. Earlier this semester, a Sun columnist wrote that Ron Paul’s position on legalizing marijuana “seems to draw only a small percentage of his supporters,” despite a Gallup Poll from October which found 50 percent of Americans in support of marijuana legalization. Unlike other Republican presidential candidates, who weighed the political consequences before coming out against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), Ron Paul opposed SOPA as the inevitable next step in his consistent defense of internet freedom.
Yet Ron Paul is not just popular on those issues: A recent Rasmussen poll showed Ron Paul ahead of President Obama 43 percent - 42 percent.
Even so, questions of electability have constrained political discussions for far too long. Daunting challenges and tumultuous times often make those in political parties even more certain of their own positions and even more obsessed with ensuring election victories at all costs. As a result, valuable opportunities for reasonable discussion and meaningful change vanish, leaving us with little meaningful dialogue and no progress. The paradox of Ron Paul is that he maintains firm convictions, while building an inclusive “big tent” movement with powerful appeal among college students. By forcing us to think about politics outside of typical party lines, listening to Ron Paul provides a fresh escape from unthinking politics and partisan tunnel vision.

Jacob this is one of the best written articles I've read regarding Ron Paul. The corporate-controlled media continues to be complicit in perpetuating the red state/blue state hoax. The only real divide is that between truth and fraud. Please (change your party registration temporarily if needed) vote for Ron Paul.

You done good, Benedict Arnold... You done good.
While you're at it, here's a few more to add to the list. Have a great laugh as your ship is sinking and, please, keep drinking the Obama brand Koolaid. Here are four of your favorite flavors:
The NDAA - Forget about martial arts. This koolaid will kick your butt with martial law.
The SOPA - For real internet cleansing. When you need your friends to come to their senses (or censors) bring out this drink. The internet police will make sure that they drink responsibly.
The Bailout - The most expensive drink ever made. This is a drink that people pay for only to give it someone they don't know. It's reverse Robin Hood, where the rich steal from the poor. Bring this drink out when your bankster friends are running low on their millions of dollars and the Treasury will send untold billions to make sure that your children and your children's children will be paying for this drink forever.
The Endless War - This blood red koolaid just never ends... Although Obama promised to discontinue this flavor, it is such a big seller that it is always sold out, just like Obama sold out to the American people. Sold in blood red body bags.
So, Obamanoids, keep drinking the koolaid. You have officially become "We the Sheeple." I think I hear the Obamanoids coming...
O Baa Maa, O Baa Maa, O Baa Maa, O Baa Maa, O Baa Maa, O Baa Maa,
This endless bleating is killing me. There is another drink you should try besides Obama brand Koolaid. It's called "Wake Up" Aid and it's actually very healthy for you. This new drink is called "The Constitution." You should try it.

Ron Paul bandwagon training guide
section 1 - website comment sections
article 1 - cookie-cutter template
1. Word-of-the-day: 'honorable'
2. Refer to him as a Dr. to peripherally leech some of that societal respect that M.D.s have going on
3. Generic-phrase-of-the-day - "This article is [excellent/fantastic/etc]
4. Praise the youth for "thinking"
5. Regardless of specific point you are responding to, be critical of mainstream media and the way our electoral system works
6. Do not offer solution to above problem. Too complex
purpose: avoid Soviet-style media coverage

its interesting that most of the attacks on ron paul center around attacking his supporters (who are the most diverse group of supporters i've ever encountered) and not his policies. its good not to jump on bandwagons but its a shame not to recognize moments of opportunity.

Very thoughtful and well said article.
Ron Paul is a very different kind of politician.
What most people do not realize is the status quo on both the Republican and Democratic sides of just the other wing of the vulture that would want to eat your carcass. Power is what they want, not the good of the American people.
I am 61 and voting for Ron Paul as my 3 children 24,16, and 30. It is so encouraging when I hear and see young people responding to truth and liberty.

This was a well written and thoughtful article. It's unfortunate that too much of our political discourse centers on sound bites and sensational headlines rather than matters of substance. Listening to the voices of involved and intelligent students provides a welcome antidote to pessimism.

I loved this: "Analyzing Ron Paul’s congressional record dating back to the 1970s provides almost archaeological proof of a lifelong dedication to making true his message of limited government. We absolutely know where he stands and that he won’t budge."
This makes it all real rather than rhetoric.

The one thing that I CANNOT stress enough is to do all that you can to get local (national if possible) TV News station reporters out there. We had 8,000 folks at UCLA...NO ONE reported it...other than YouTube. You can have 100,000 people...it won't matter [much] unless the message reaches the masses...unfortunately, those masses watch their local news, CNN and Fox rather than consult with the Interwebs. Good luck!

It seems like all the Ron Paul fanatics have come out in force in the comments section. Let me be the lonely voice to say:
1. A single Rasmussen poll is not evidence for much of a trend. Rasmussen is a notoriously skewed polling firm. More to the point, your numbers are wrong. That poll had Obama up 43-42 (Source: http://www.rasmussenreports.co...
/2012_presidential_election_matchups2. And finally, RealClearPolitics (a notoriously NOT biased aggregate of news, opinions and poll numbers) has Obama up an average of 7.2% based on five polls within the last 5 months.
2. How can one be electable even in your fantasy land if one sends out "incendiary newsletters"? (Source: http://www.tnr.com/article/pol...
3. How can one be elected even in your fantasy land if one genuinely opposes the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -- not even in "dog-whistle" tactics like most modern Republicans? (Source: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-...
4. How can one be elected even in your fantasy land if one supports state nullification for federal laws, an issue firmly decided around 150 years ago? (Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
So yes, consider Dr. Paul if "typical party lines" to you is "reason" and listening to the septuagenarian offers a "fresh escape" from the permanent reality you call "politics and partisan tunnel vision."

Let me be the lonely voice to answer your "yawn" predictable criticisms:
1. Ron Paul has consistently done well in all kinds of polls. Pick whichever one you want.
2. Every politician has a fire or two to put out. I will mention two fires that Obama had "birth certificate" (still smoldering) and Pastor Jeremiah Wright (how could you listen to such "incendiary sermons" and attend a church for two decades and then say you don't agree is beyond me).
3. Read why he opposed it and you may understand why. Ron Paul criticized the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 stating that it "undermined the concept of liberty" and "destroyed the principle of private property and private choices."
"If you try to improve relationships by forcing and telling people what they can't do, and you ignore and undermine the principles of liberty, then the government can come into our bedrooms," Paul told Candy Crowley on CNN's "State of the Union." "And that's exactly what has happened. Look at what's happened with the PATRIOT Act. They can come into our houses, our bedrooms our businesses ... And it started back then."
Ron Paul explained that while he supports the fact that the legislation repealed the notorious Jim Crow laws, which forced racial segregation, he believes it is the government, not the people, that causes racial tensions. Today's race problems, he said, result from the war on drugs, the flawed U.S. court system and the military.
4. The United "States" formed the Federal government not the other way around. According to the constitution, power was supposed to remain mostly vested in the states not in a centralized federal government. Ron Paul follows the constitution, so why wouldn't he think otherwise.
So, while Ron Paul has always been for limited government, limiting spending (and reducing taxation), protecting our individual rights and liberties, and ending senseless wars, in contrast, President Obama has expanded government, increased spending and taxes (to pay for bailouts and programs), supported SOPA and NDAA, and has not brought the troops home like he "campaign" promised. I could add more contrast, but I'm trying to keep this short.
So, there you have it. You can live in your "fantasy socialist land" of having a President who will strip away your rights, send the military off to one war after another, tax the heck out of US, while expanding the government and giving it more and more power to intrude into our daily lives and homes.
Only Ron Paul will stand up to this nonsense.
Ron Paul, the only sane and honest candidate for President!

When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – When you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – When you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice – You may know that your society is doomed.” – Ayn Rand, “Atlas Shrugged”, 1957
I believe that you may be living in "Fantasyland" if you think our country is headed in the right direction.....or that anything will change under Obama or Romney. They are both political insiders endorsed by other political insiders ie: part of the problem = corruption, crony capitalism, pandering to special interests = the reason our country is in such a mess!!!
The only man we can trust and the only man worthy of becoming our next President is the honorable Dr. Ron Paul.

You seem to be really reaching for reasons not to like the guy. I saw the Rasmussen poll, and he did win... and its not the first that he has won. Part of the problem is the MSM dogs him at every chance they get. Those who do independent research of candidates rather than relying on MSM, know that he is much better than any other candidate. You should look up his speeches and interviews on YouTube. You may find out you like Ron Paul more than you think. I was in the same boat as you, but now think that he's the right guy for the job... the only one right now who is. :D

@ The Handbook, what about those things are not the truth? I'm curious. Are we supposed to say the youth is ignorant and irrelevant? Is a man not honorable to serve his country in a war? Is it inappropriate to address an M.D. as "doctor"? Is the main stream media unbiased and truthful? I believe Dr. Paul has come up with many more solutions than the other candidates and your whole premise is pathetic. Good luck as your standard of living goes down the tube in the coming years.

It is so encouraging to see your generation awakening to the reality of the dismal future if something is not done to turn around this country.Instead of focusing on frat parties and intercollegiate sports contest...your generation is focusing on their freedom and liberty in a time when..... everyday ....another law is passed that squashes your liberty, creativity, finances and FUTURE. I am a delegate to Georgia's state convention in May. I encourage you to get as many people as possible to go through this process in your own State. The delegate count is what gives you a voice in the REAL election, not just the caucus or primary.Together we (young middle aged and old) can turn around the destructive policies that have plagued our country for years and restore the freedom the constitution was written to ensure for every American citizen!!!!
