The United States has recently fallen victim to a series of natural disasters across the country. The fires in Northern California, and the hurricanes in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean changed many lives forever, but the pollution left in their wake will continue to change lives for many years to come.
Outdoor air pollution is responsible for millions of premature deaths each year. This kind of pollution causes cancer, heart disease, strokes, asthma and other respiratory diseases. The recent fires serve to compound the dangers already posed by toxins and particulate matter thrown into the air both during and after such disasters.
Typical air pollution consists of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter, a mix of solid and liquid particles suspended in the air, and one of the most dangerous types of air pollution. The smaller the particle, the worse it is for your health because it penetrates deep into the lungs, becoming lodged in tissues and raising the risk of lung cancer and heart disease.
Reports from the University of California, Davis, found that as much air pollution was generated by the recent fires as the amount created by all the vehicles in the state in an entire year––the worst air pollution ever recorded in that area. Other reports said that more than 10,000 tons of particulate matter was released by the fires, much of which can find its way into the lungs.
Whether you’re exposed to the unusually toxic fumes of a raging fire, or to the dangerous contents of normal air pollution, there are steps you can take to support your body. For one, be sure to purchase a high quality air purifier. Studies have shown that the volume of dangerous particulate matter is substantially reduced with aids such as these. You should also try to keep the windows shut as tightly as possible, and consider a face mask designed to filter out the small particulate matter so that it doesn’t get into your lungs. But you should also consider taking the following nutritional supplements to support your embattled body. Here are the five most effective of them:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an incredibly safe and effective antioxidant. It supports the immune system and cardiovascular health, and it can help to protect us from cancer and strokes. For maximum protection, take 4 grams a day.
Resveratrol
This amazing supplement is a potent protector against the damaging effects of oxidative stress, which occurs when toxins are present. It blocks the production of dangerous inflammatory agents and strengthens the lining of arteries. The range of benefits of resveratrol is wide: it triggers the metabolic engines of the body, promoting fat burning and cellular rejuvenation. Take 500 mg daily.
Curcumin
Curcumin can modulate multiple cell signaling pathways, and has tremendous anti-inflammatory properties. It dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body, and improves brain health. It also helps the maintenance of healthy arteries, lowers the risk of heart attacks, lowers the risk of developing cancer, and improves a host of other medical conditions. Dosing can go as high as 12 grams a day. Be sure to get a curcumin supplement that is readily absorbed.
Green Tea
Green tea is filled with antioxidants, and has many fabulous benefits, including helping to prevent dementia and memory loss, protecting the brain cells from oxidative damage, and protecting the heart. It can reduce cholesterol, lower overall inflammation, reduce plaque build-up in the arteries, lower cancer risk, and improve memory. Try to drink five cups daily, or take one capsule, which equals three cups. Always take with food.
Liposomal Glutathione
When your body is exposed to a large amount of toxins, there is great pressure on the detoxification pathways, and almost all of them require large quantities of glutathione. Glutathione is known as the “master” detoxifier and antioxidant of the body, and is necessary in large quantities to detoxify and eliminate toxins, and in particular mercury. Glutathione is poorly absorbed, so be sure to take a form known as liposomal, to allow for absorption. Take 250 mg twice a day.
Sadly, the predictions say there are more fires in the years to come and in any case, air pollution remains a health issue as the burning of fossil fuels seems never to stop. We must all learn to take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our families from the very real health dangers involved in the simplest and most critical of all life functions – breathing.
