Milkweed sap cures common skin cancers

Milkweed sap cures common skin cancers

Tuesday, February 15, 2011 by: S. L. Baker, features writer

(NaturalNews) If you talk about herbs, plants and other totally natural substances having the potential to actually cure cancer, odds are you'll be greeted with eye-rolling and disbelief -- especially from the mainstream medical establishment. But research just published in the Journal of British Dermatology provides compelling evidence that the sap from a common weed known as milkweed or petty surge can literally cure certain types of cancers.

Although regarded as a nuisance weed by most gardeners, the plant (whose botanical name is Euphorbia peplus) has been valued for centuries in many folk medicine traditions as a treatment for asthma, warts and several types of cancer. Now a group of Australian scientists from a number of medical institutions in Brisbane have tested milkweed sap on humans and found that it works remarkably well on non-melanoma skin cancers. The researchers believe the plant substance is effective due to a compound it contains called ingenol mebutate which destroys cancer cells.

Non-melanoma skin cancers, which affect hundreds of thousands of people world-wide, are rarely fatal. However, they can be disfiguring without treatment -- which can involve extensive and repeated surgery. These malignant lesions usually appear on the areas of the body most often exposed to the sun, including the head, neck, ears, and back of the hands.

For the new study, the researchers recruited 36 patients with a total of 48 non-melanoma lesions included basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and intraepidermal carcinomas (IEC), a growth of cancerous cells confined to the outer layer of the skin. Some of these people had skin cancers that had failed to respond to conventional treatment including surgery. The rest had refused surgery or had been told surgery was not an option for them due to advanced age.

The research participants were treated once a day for three consecutive days by an oncologist who used a cotton applicator to simply cover the surface of each cancerous lesion with milkweed sap. One month later, 41 out of 48 cancers had complete disappeared.

Patients who had some of lesions remaining after four weeks were given a second course of milkweed sap treatment. And about 15 months following treatment, two thirds of all the 48 skin cancer lesions were still showing a complete cure. The final outcome was a 75 per cent total response for IEC lesions, 57 per cent for BCC and 50 per cent for SCC lesions. What's more, when the lesions disappeared, the skin was left soft and clear.

Discover the cancer-fighting power of raspberries

Discover the cancer-fighting power of raspberries

Thursday, February 10, 2011 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) A preliminary study out of Clemson University (CU) in South Carolina has found that raspberries are a powerful weapon against cancer. Researchers there say that, in tests, raspberry extracts successfully destroyed about 90 percent of stomach, colon, and breast cancer cells.

Raspberries are rich in powerful antioxidants, which are known to be powerful cancer fighters. But the research team from the CU Department of Nursing believe that some other substance in raspberries is also responsible for their anti-cancer effect.

For their study, the team tested the effects of an extract of Meeker red raspberries, a popular U.S. variety of the fruit. Compared to an ascorbic acid (vitamin C) solution with more antioxidants, the raspberry extract proved to be eight times more effective, clearly indicating that some other substance is responsible for the destruction of cancer cells.

For breast cancer cells, however, the team found that common antioxidants are about half as effective as raspberries at eliminating cancer cells. But in all cases, the combination of the raspberries' antioxidants and other cancer-fighting substances proved to be the most effective of any other substance tested.

A 2009 study published in the American Association for Cancer Research journal Cancer Prevention Research found that specific antioxidants in black raspberries known as anthocyanins effectively inhibit esophageal cancer cell growth and trigger apoptosis, the death of existing cancer cells (http://www.naturalnews.com/025395_c...).

"[Raspberries] contain ellagic acid that laboratory studies have shown may help prevent cancers of the skin, bladder, lung, esophagus, and breast," writes Elaine Magee in her book Food Synergy: Unleash Hundreds of Powerful Healing Food Combinations to Fight Disease and Live Well.

Raspberries are also known to fight leukemia, oral cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stomach ulcers, and high cholesterol (http://www.naturalnews.com/raspberr...).

A report surfaced on the Internet saying the FDA was banning intravenous vitamin C treatments. While the report proved to be a hoax

Volume 4, Issue 6 February 10, 2011

Have you seen this

vitamin C hoax?

You may have heard the news about vitamin C a couple weeks ago. A report surfaced on the Internet saying the FDA was banning intravenous vitamin C treatments. While the report proved to be a hoax, it did increase the awareness of the treatment. Let me show you just how important this treatment is — and why a ban would be disastrous.

I talked to a colleague of mine a few weeks ago. He told me that he was giving up his hospital affiliation. This means that he will no longer be able to treat any of his patients who are in the hospital. This is the same thing I did 30 years ago, only one year after I first began to devote my career to natural healing.

Why I call this "natural

body armor" against

inflammatory fires...

Not only does it contain 9 of the best nutrients for taming inflammation, it includes them at levels up to three times higher than other supplements.

Plus, it's the only one to include a remarkable discovery that quenches the fire in every part of your body-so you get fast relief.

Learn more:

When I asked him why he decided to no longer work in the hospital, he cited the same reason that I had. There is just no use knowing all about natural healing when the hospitals won't let you do it. The patient really has no choice but to have drug-oriented physicians treat them. So when a patient of mine or his needs hospitalization, we can't care for them, we just pray for them. And vitamin C is one of those natural treatments that really belongs in the hospital.

Why? Because vitamin C is so instrumental in helping the body in times of a trauma (such as surgery) that your body uses it up quickly. In fact, it often uses it up in only a matter of minutes. Then after surgery, the levels remain low. But not to worry, surgeons and nutritionists say, hospitals routinely give post operative patients vitamin C in their IVs. But here's the problem. According to the authors of a recent study, "To normalize plasma vitamin C concentration, much higher doses than the recommended daily allowance or doses recommended in parenteral [intravenous] nutrition guidelines are needed in these patients."

And that's what makes me crazy.

We knew this 30 years ago! Thirty years ago, I told the nutrition committee in my hospital that I wanted to give my surgical patients doses of vitamin C much larger than the RDA in order to prevent complications. They told me categorically: "No!" It was too dangerous, they said.

Now, 30 years later, vitamin C has suddenly become much safer.

The researchers in this study now recommend: "In uncomplicated surgical patients, more than 500 mg/day of vitamin C may be required, with much higher doses in surgical intensive care unit patients." That's seven times the RDA!

They go on, "In uncomplicated gastrointestinal surgery, continuous parenteral [intravenous] administration of 500 mg/day of vitamin C reduced postoperative oxidative stress." And, "Postoperative atrial fibrillation was prevented after cardiac surgery by perioperative vitamin C supplementation."

While this is a move in the right direction, it's not enough. The amount of vitamin C that's really needed in many post-surgical and critically ill patients is closer to 100 times what these researchers recommend. I and many other doctors treating patients with cancer routinely give patients 120,000 mg of intravenous vitamin C (in the form of ascorbate) in only three hours. That's 24 times the dose recommended by this study!

Vitamin C at these levels is not only safe, it's often very effective. I can't prove it (because no one has tested it; in fact, no one is allowed to test it), but I can almost guarantee that if hospitals used these higher doses in surgical patients, it would save many lives and a ton of money. But don't despair, the odds are good that we will see these kinds of doses in only another 30-40 years.

If you must have surgery, whenever possible have your integrative physician give you an IV of vitamin C the day before. And have him do it again the day after you get out of the hospital. It will significantly improve your recovery.

A Key Player in Disease Prevention and Overall Health Support

A Key Player in Disease Prevention and Overall Health Support

In recent years vitamin D has emerged as a star of the "vitamin" world. For example, there are currently over 800 studies showing vitamin D's effectiveness against cancer. Optimizing your vitamin D levels can literally cut your risk of several cancers by 50 percent!

Further, middle aged and elderly people with high levels of vitamin D could reduce their chances of developing heart disease or diabetes by 43 percent.

Scientists have actually identified a total of nearly 3,000 genes that are upregulated by vitamin D. Because vitamin D is actually a "prohormone," which your body produces from cholesterol, it influences your entire body -- receptors that respond to the vitamin have been found in almost every type of human cell, from your brain to your bones.

So what modern science has now realized is that vitamin D does more than just aid in the absorption of calcium and bone formation, it is also involved in multiple repair and maintenance functions, touches thousands of different genes, regulates your immune system, and much, much more.

Just one example of an important gene that vitamin D up-regulates is your ability to fight infections, as well as chronic inflammation. It produces over 200 antimicrobial peptides, the most important of which is cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic.

This is one of the explanations for why it's so effective against colds and influenza.

In addition, since vitamin D also modulates (balances) your immune response, it can prevent an overreaction in the form of inflammation, which can lead to a variety of autoimmune disorders, such as Crohn's disease for example. Research has even uncovered that vitamin D may be an effective therapeutic agent to treat or prevent allergy to a common mold.

Among the many other benefits that research is revealing, low levels of vitamin D also double your risk of stroke, which is the third leading cause of death in the United States.

This adds to research that also found vitamin D deficiency is associated with arterial stiffness, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. A separate study from Finland also found that those with the lowest vitamin D levels had a 25 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease or stroke, and when only stroke was looked at, those with the lowest levels had twice the risk as those with the highest.

So you can see that optimizing your vitamin D levels is easily one of the best ways to help prevent a myriad of diseases and conditions, ranging from heart disease, diabetes and cancer to autoimmune disorders, stroke, colds and flu.

What is the Best Form of Vitamin D?

Ideally, the best place to get vitamin D is from your skin being exposed to the UV-B that is in normal sunlight. Vitamin D from sunlight acts as a pro-hormone, rapidly converting into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or vitamin D3. A common myth is that occasional exposure of your face and hands to sunlight is "sufficient" for vitamin D nutrition. For most of us, this is an absolutely inadequate exposure to move vitamin D levels to the healthy range.

To optimize your levels, you need to expose large portions of your skin to the sun, and you need to do it for more than a few minutes. And, contrary to popular belief, the best time to be in the sun for vitamin D production is actually as near to solar noon as possible.

If you want to get out in the sun to maximize your vitamin D production, and minimize your risk of malignant melanoma, the middle of the day (roughly between 10:00am and 2:00pm) is the best and safest time to go.During this time you need the shortest exposure time to produce vitamin D because UVB rays are most intense at this time. Plus, when the sun goes down toward the horizon, the UVB is filtered out much more than the dangerous UVA.

You just need to be cautious about the length of your exposure. You only need enough exposure to have your skin turn the lightest shade of pink. This may only be a few minutes for some if you have a very pale skin.

Once you reach this point your body will not make any additional vitamin D and any additional exposure will only cause harm and damage to your skin.

Most people with fair skin will max out their vitamin D production in just 10-20 minutes, or, again, when your skin starts turning the lightest shade of pink. Some will need less, others more. The darker your skin, the longer exposure you will need to optimize your vitamin D production.

Unfortunately, the amount of sun reaching most of the U.S. is only sufficient to generate a healthy vitamin D response for far less than half the year -- and that's only if you take the time to go out in it.

So, for those times of the year when access to the proper amount of sun is not possible, you will want to consider an oral form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Make sure, if you supplement, that you are using vitamin D3 and not the far inferior vitamin D2. As the latest research shows, D3 is approximately 87% more potent in raising and maintaining vitamin D concentrations and produces 2- to 3-fold greater storage of vitamin D than does D2. Another option is to use a safe tanning bed, paying careful attention to not getting burned
