ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - There are radioactive secrets beneath the banks and waters of a north St. Louis County creek that may be linked to a staggering number of cancers, illnesses and birth defects. In four square miles, there are three reported cases of conjoined twins and cancer rates that one data expert says is statistically impossible.
About two years ago, Janell Wright and several of her class of '88 McCluer North High School friends started wondering why so many of their peers were battling cancer.
"Where it got to be suspicious is when we had two friends diagnosed within a couple of months of each other with appendix cancer. And both people were told that is a one in a million cancer," said Wright.
Wright, an accountant and former auditor, started collecting data from her classmates. Soon, peers from neighboring schools reached out too.
"On Facebook, it just took off like wildfire. People started reporting their cancers and auto immune diseases," Wright said.
At first she found 30 cases. Within two months, she had data on 200 cases. Now, her maps have more than 700 cases in four square miles, including:
62 brain cancer cases
27 leukemia cases
26 lung cancer cases
24 multiple sclerosis cases
15 lymphoma cases
10 pancreatic cancer cases
3 conjoined twins

Wright became equally alarmed when data showed some of her classmates' children had serious medical problems too.
"The children usually came down with brain cancer in the first 15 years of life, in addition, leukemia. In my peer group's children, there were several children who had to have their thyroid removed before they were 10-years-old," she said.
Strange coincidence or was something else at play? Another classmate, Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach, is an economist at Northwestern University. She ran her own analysis and found the likelihood of so many cancers among her high school peers was .00000001. Schanzenbach called it a statistical improbability.
Connected by Facebook, high school, and illness, the classmates made a startling discovery. The creek where they played as children carried a secret.
In the 1940s, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in downtown St. Louis purified thousands of tons of uranium to make the first atomic bombs. But the process also generated enormous amounts of radioactive waste. Sighting national security, the government quietly ordered the material moved to north St. Louis County in 1947.
Twenty-one acres of airport land became a dumping site where a toxic mixture of uranium, thorium, and radium sat uncovered or in barrels. In the 1960s, government documents noted contents from the rusting barrels were seeping into nearby Coldwater Creek. And by the 1990s, the government confirmed unsafe levels of radioactive materials in the water.
"You're having to grasp this idea that something was wrong. Nobody knew about it. Our parents didn't know, nobody knew," said Wright.
Wright and the 2,000 people now on the Facebook page Coldwater Creek Just the Facts Please wonder if they inhaled radioactive dust that blew in from the dump, or swallowed small amounts of toxic creek water.
Wright recently shared her data with the Army Corp of Engineers, which monitors the creek.
Members of the Facebook group want the CDC to investigate their data and determine if there is a cancer cluster. They are currently trying to build their case in hopes of getting to the truth.
Wright hopes she is wrong about the cancer cluster and link to Cold Water Creek. Her greatest fear is that she is right.
Based on the latest data, the Army Corp of Engineers reports there is no contamination threat to current homeowners. And monitoring of the creek continues.
Thirty people recently filed suit against Mallinckrodt and other companies. A spokesperson for Mallinckrodt, which is now owned by Covidian, said Mallinckrodt was not involved in the disposal or cleanup of the nuclear waste.

Lynn Phillips from Mallinckrodt's Media Relations issued the following statement:"

"The St. Louis Airport Site was used for disposal of demolition debris from buildings decommissioned and demolished nearly 50 years ago by a third party demolition contractor under the oversight of the U.S. government. Some of this debris was from buildings formerly used for uranium processing dating back to the 1940s at a Mallinckrodt site in St. Louis. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in coordination with the Department of Energy is now responsible for the environmental remediation of the St. Louis Airport Site, which includes Coldwater Creek, under its Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program. This remediation is nearly complete. Mallinckrodt is not involved in the remediation activities that have been conducted at the St. Louis Airport Site. "

Have you heard of the mushroom being used to boost the immune system and fight cancer? While there are countless foods and compounds out there being researched for their cancer-fighting abilities, the turkey tail mushroom is one food that has gained some spotlight as of recent. Specifically, the mushroom has been shown to be highly effective at suppressing prostate tumor development.
The research, coming from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), focuses on a compound known as polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which is found in the turkey tail mushroom. For the study, two groups of mice were used, one of which was fed PSP for 20 weeks. What Dr. ling found was that mice fed the PSP over the 20 weeks did not develop any prostate tumors, whereas the group of mice not fed PSP did develop tumors.
Dr Ling, from the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre-Queensland and Institute for Biomedical Health & Innovation at QUT had this to say:
“The findings are quite significant. What we wanted to demonstrate was whether that compound could stop the development of prostate tumours in the first place. In the past, other inhibitors tested in research trials have been shown to be up to 70 per cent effective, but we’re seeing 100 per cent of this tumour prevented from developing with PSP. Importantly, we did not see any side effects from the treatment.”
While Lings research shows the potential for polysaccharopeptide to completely inhibit prostate tumor formation, he does note that his research doesn’t suggest that simply eating the mushrooms would have the same benefit.

Turkey Tail Mushroom and Breast Cancer

Of course the research doesn’t end there with the turkey tail mushroom. More recently, the mushroom was used by a cancer patient from Bastyr University. The breast cancer patient, Lisa Clinton, is just one of many individuals around the world who wholeheartedly believe that natural foods played a large role in her survival. After going through surgery, the ice skating competitor refused the extremely questionable cancer-treatment chemotherapy and turned to turkey tail instead to target her cancer.
“We consider cancer a failure of the immune system…When they [turkey tail] are ingested into the body, they stimulate immune cells that line the intestines, and then those stimulate other immune cells all over the body,” says Dr. Leanna Standish at Bastyr University.
If you’re looking to buy the turkey tail mushroom, take these tips into consideration:
  • Buy certified organic.
  • Look for turkey tail coming from skilled growers with skills in cultivation.
Be sure to check out some other cancer-fighting foods to broaden your cancer-prevention horizon.

An Inspiring Visual Journey of Personal Healing

An Inspiring Visual Journey of Personal Healing

By Dr. Mercola
A number of fascinating and well-produced documentaries about health have emerged over the past few years, and this one is no exception. Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, the award-winning film by Australian entrepreneur Joe Cross, offers an inspiring glimpse into the journey of self-healing with food.
With two-thirds of Americans overweight or obese, one-in-four being pre-diabetic or diabetic, and heart disease and cancer topping the mortality charts, the issue of how to achieve good health has never been more pertinent to more people.
The film also features Phil Staples, a morbidly obese truck driver who, like Joe, suffers from a debilitating autoimmune disease.
"As Joe is recovering his health, Phil begins his own epic journey to get well. What emerges is nothing short of amazing – an inspiring tale of healing and human connection.
Part road trip, part self-help manifesto, FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD defies the traditional documentary format to present an unconventional and uplifting story of two men from different worlds who each realize that the only person who can save them is themselves."1
The film offers powerful testament to the profound healing ability of your body – if only you will give it a chance. Nutrition is to your body what fuel is for your car.

You cannot expect a Lamborghini to run on diesel. Likewise, stuffing yourself with denatured, wholly “dead” processed foods laden with unnatural and oftentimes toxic chemicals is bound to have consequences.
Obesity and related health problems are directly attributable to flawed diet – a diet too high in carbs and poor-quality proteins, and too low in healthy fats. First and foremost, a healthy diet is based on fresh whole, preferably organic foods, and foods that have been minimally processed.

A Personal Journey of Healing

Joe, while an Australian, is in terms of health very much a stereotypical American. And, like so many others, came to realize that without your health, nothing else much matters.

By the time he hit 40, he was “professionally successful but physically bankrupt,” tipping the scales at 300 pounds and taking multiple medications for an autoimmune disease doctors could not find the root cause of. His weight, his mysterious medical condition, and side effects from the drugs were sapping his life away and destroying his quality of life.
“When I turned 40, I realized that I had been all talk and no action for years, saying that someday I would change my life and do something to reclaim the robust health I had enjoyed as a younger man,” he says.2
“It was a sobering realization – I had focused my capacity for action, determination and discipline on nothing but creating wealth. It was time to harness those skills to create health.
It occurred to me that I was not alone. Yes, my disease was very rare – but lots of people are sick. And you certainly don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that most of us in the developed world are unhealthily fat. Like lots of people, I had been outsourcing my health problems to doctors, but no one had been able to fix what ailed me. What if I could take control of the problem, and my own role in creating the situation?”
Shunning his steady diet of processed food for real, whole foods – the stuff that grows in the ground and on trees and is sold without a nutrition label – was the logical place to start. For the first 60 days, he juiced his way across the United States with film crew in tow, talking to people about their diets along the way. Says Joe:
“Making this movie changed my life, opened my eyes and re-focused my mission on something that is startling simple and utterly effective: helping people reclaim their health and vitality as I did by consuming more fruits and vegetables... It is amazing what can happen. I can vouch for this by first-hand experience. After 60 days of juice and another 70 days of eating just fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans and seeds I was 100 lbs lighter and off all medication. I've been that way ever since.”

8 Things Your Grandparents Did That Could Save Your Life

Take Control of Your Health and Embrace Real Food

If you're at all concerned about your health – whether you want to gain health or maintain it – nutrition is paramount. In fact, your diet accounts for about 80 percent of the health benefits reaped from a healthy lifestyle, with the remaining 20 percent from exercise.
First and foremost, a healthy diet is based on fresh whole, preferably organic foods, and foods that have been minimally processed. These are the signs of high-quality, health-promoting foods you'll want to look for when grocery shopping. If the food meets these criteria, it is most likely a wise choice, and would fall under the designation of "real food," which is the very foundation of good health:
  1. It's grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers (organic foods fit this description, but so do some non-organic foods)
  2. It's not genetically engineered
  3. It contains no added growth hormones, antibiotics, or other drugs
  4. It does not contain any artificial ingredients, including chemical preservatives
  5. It is fresh (keep in mind that if you have to choose between wilted organic produce or fresh conventional produce, the latter may be the better option)
  6. It did not come from a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO)
  7. It is grown with the laws of nature in mind (meaning animals are fed their native diets, not a mix of grains and animal byproducts, and have free-range access to the outdoors)
  8. It is grown in a sustainable way (using minimal amounts of water, protecting the soil from burnout, and turning animal wastes into natural fertilizers instead of environmental pollutants)

How to Find Locally-Grown Foods

Additionally, here are some great resources to obtain wholesome, farm-fresh food that supports not only you but also the environment:

Tetanus Shot: Just as Bad as Other Vaccinations

Tetanus Shot: Just as Bad as Other Vaccinations

One trend I’ve noticed in recent years among non-vaccinating parents is the tendency to allow their children to be immunized for tetanus as the result of a puncture wound or an injury requiring stitches.
Perhaps the emotional upset the parent is experiencing at the time from their child’s injury is what makes them more open to tetanus immunization.  A more vulnerable emotional state would certainly open the door to getting the child vaxed even if completely unnecessary.
I don’t think emotional state completely explains the more favorable opinion the public seems to have of the tetanus shot versus other immunizations, however.

Why the tetanus shot is considered in a different class than other vaccinations and somehow less dangerous is something I’ve thought about a lot recently.   Why would a non-vaccinating parent allow a tetanus shot especially when there are easy, nontoxic ways to prevent contamination of a wound and the danger of contracting a serious lockjaw infection without a tetanus jab?
I myself suffered a fairly severe and deep cut on my ankle from a freak accident a few years ago but the thought of getting a tetanus shot for the injury never even crossed my mind.  I simply soaked my foot and ankle in warm salt water a couple of times a day for about a week to ensure that it stayed clean and contamination free.
The injury healed up nicely and I never exposed myself to the toxins and lingering health problems that can and do result from a tetanus shot.
My extreme disdain for the tetanus shot stems from the health crisis I experienced that lasted for numerous months from a simple tetanus booster during my first year away at college.
I was a college athlete and was told when I landed a spot on my university’s women’s golf team that I was “required” to get a tetanus booster in order to play.
I didn’t know at the time that I could actually opt out of the shot.  This option was never discussed with me by the school nurse.  She just told me I “had” to get the shot in order to play on the golf team, so like the little college lemming that I was at the time, I rolled up my sleeve and got the shot.
The very next day, I noticed that I could not breathe properly.   Deep breathing was impossible due to the shooting pain that shot through my chest each time I tried to take more than the shallowest of breaths.
I figured I had pulled a muscle or something, so I did my best to ignore the problem for a few days, but it didn’t get any better.
I consulted with a doctor about my condition and was told that I had a neuralgia which is irritation, inflammation or damage to a nerve that causes sharp, shooting pain.  Each time I tried to take a deep breath, the nerve that was affected in my chest was irritated by the movement causing the severe pain I felt with anything but a very shallow breath.
A neuralgia can take quite awhile to heal and in my case, it took the entire first semester of school until I was able to fully breathe again without severe pain.
Did the tetanus shot cause my neuralgia?  I absolutely believe it did.   The pain started within hours of when I received the shot and the ingredients in the shot most definitely could have triggered the nerve inflammation and damage that resulted.
The booster I received at that time was the tetanus-diptheria (Td) booster.  These shots are given every ten years to “maintain immunity” for children nineteen years of age to adults who are sixty-five years of age.
Ingredients in the Td booster include:
  • Aluminum Potassium Sulfate
  • Bovine Extract
  • Formaldehyde or Formalin
  • 2-Phenoxyethanol
  • Peptone,
  • Thimerosal (at the time of my vaccination, thimerosal was still used although it is now supposedly filtered out)

Which Toxic Vaccine Ingredient Most Likely Caused My Neuralgia?

The thimerosal in the Td booster could have definitely caused a neurological problem because this chemical is 49.6% mercury and mercury is a potent neurotoxin even in the tiniest of amounts.
What about the formaldehyde?  Morticians use formaldehyde to embalm people who have died.  It is that clear liquid with a very strong smell that burns your eyes and preserves the frogs and other animals in jars that many of us dissected in high school science class.
Besides being classified as a carcinogen by the National Institute of Health, formaldehyde can also trigger nerve damage and chest pains exactly like what I experienced.  It is estimated that 10-20% of the population may react acutely like I did when exposed to any amount.
2-Phenoxyethanol, while toxic, is not likely the cause of the neuralgia I experienced as the side effects are:
  • Headache
  • Shock
  • Convulsions
  • Weakness
  • Kidney damage
  • Cardiac failure
  • Kidney failure
Peptone is a soluble, liquid protein nutrient medium for growing bacteria.  I wasn’t able to find any side effects from having it injected, but it sure doesn’t sound safe to me.
Aluminum Potassium Sulfate is listed as a current ingredient of the Td booster, but I doubt it was in the one I received years ago as this chemical is the replacement for thimerosal in vaccines but is no less toxic.
The Most Likely Culprit?
After examining each of the toxic ingredients in the tetanus booster I received in college, it is my opinion that the formaldehyde was probably the most likely cause of my breathing problems and months long neuralgia.
While there are no double blind studies to indicate that this common vaccine ingredient may cause respiratory distress and/or neuralgia when injected, I don’t need any.  There is plenty of science on the dangers of even breathing carcinogenic formaldehyde fumes (FEMA trailer anyone?) or having it touch the skin let alone having it injected which is no doubt much worse. I know what I experienced and I know that I will never again have a tetanus shot nor will I allow my children to have one.
The tetanus shot is just as bad as all the others – the ingredients are no less toxic and a single booster can be debilitating even for a young, healthy, college athlete like what I experienced at age nineteen.
If your child experiences an injury requiring stitches and a trip to the doctor, be aware that the tetanus shot will be pushed on you.  If you are a non-vaccinating parent, don’t be fooled.  The tetanus shot is in no way deserving of its “less toxic” and “sometimes useful” reputation.

Title: Tsunami debris litters B.C. beaches
Source: The Globe and Mail
Author: MARK HUME
Date: Jan. 28 2013
Debris from the tsunami that struck Japan two years ago is building up on West Coast beaches, with everything from soccer balls to floating docks drifting ashore from Alaska to California.
Peter Barratt, operations manager for West Coast Helicopters, has been looking down on British Columbia’s rugged Pacific coastline for much of the past 30 years – and he has never seen as much garbage as he did on a recent reconnaissance flight along northwest Vancouver Island with Will Soltau, of the Living Oceans Society.
In a flight that took them along the remote outer coast, the two men said they saw garbage scattered on almost every beach for more than 100 kilometres. Mr. Barratt, a pilot with decades of experience on the coast, said it is clear large amounts of debris from the tsunami, which hit Japan in March, 2011, are coming ashore. [...]
“Of course there’s always debris on the beaches,” he added. “But I dropped down … and, holy crap, all of a sudden you see all this stuff. [...]
“I expect the worst isn’t over yet,” [Soltau] he said. [...]
An estimated 1.5 million tonnes of debris is eventually expected to hit the West Coast. [...]
