A remarkable human clinical study published in the journal Diabetes Care, the journal of the American Diabetes Association, revealed that turmeric extract was 100% successful at preventing prediabetic patients from becoming diabetic over the course of a 9-month intervention.[1]
Performed by Thailand researchers, the study's primary object was to assess the efficacy of curcumin, the primary polyphenol in turmeric which gives the spice its golden hue, in delaying the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a prediabetic population.
The study design was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial including 240 subjects who met the American Diabetic Association's criteria for prediabetes. All subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 250 mg of curcuminoid or placebo capsules for 9 months.
Type 2 diabetes progression was assessed by measuring a wide range of parameters, including changes in the insulin-producing cells within the pancreas known as β-cells, insulin resistance, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine known as adiponectin, at four different times:  baseline, 3-, 6-, and 9-month visits during the course of intervention.
The results were reported as follows:
"After 9 months of treatment, 16.4% of subjects in the placebo group were diagnosed with T2DM, whereas none were diagnosed with T2DM in the curcumin-treated group. In addition, the curcumin-treated group showed a better overall function of β-cells, with higher HOMA-β (61.58 vs. 48.72; P < 0.01) and lower C-peptide (1.7 vs. 2.17; P < 0.05). The curcumin-treated group showed a lower level of HOMA-IR (3.22 vs. 4.04; P < 0.001) and higher adiponectin (22.46 vs. 18.45; P < 0.05) when compared with the placebo group." [emphasis added]
The researchers concluded:
"A 9-month curcumin intervention in a prediabetic population significantly lowered the number of prediabetic individuals who eventually developed T2DM. In addition, the curcumin treatment appeared to improve overall function of β-cells, with very minor adverse effects. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the curcumin intervention in a prediabetic population may be beneficial."

Discussion
Considering that at least 40% of the US population ages 40-74 are believed to have prediabetes, according to CDC statistics, [2] the health implications of this study are profound.
Curcumin, which constitutes approximately 3-4% of dry turmeric powder by weight, is affordable, safe and easily accessible.  Moreover, over 600 potential health benefits of curcumin (and/or turmeric) have been documented within the biomedical literature freely available to peruse on either the National Library of Medicine's open access database (pubmed.gov search: "curcumin"), or for your convenience, our intricately organized Curcumin database.
Recently, we highlighted research on curcumin's potential ability to heal the diabetic liver. (Read: Turmeric May Repair and Regenerate Diabetic Liver Function)  But this is really only the tip of the iceberg.  Below you will find the related sections on our Curcumin database indicating curcumin's value in a wide range of diabetic complications:

Considering the abject failure, if not also sometimes deadly nature of diabetic medications, turmeric (curcumin) provides an ideal alternative. We can only hope that medical professionals who treat prediabetics and diabetics will take seriously this study, especially considering that it was published in the American Diabetic Association's very own, highly respected journal.

When my boys were young, I once asked each of them what would they ask for if they could have anything in the world. Has Stamets patented the magic wand?

Humanity is facing a problem. Our immediate environment is riddled with pesticides. They are making us unhealthy faster than we can study the effects. In addition, these pesticides play large roles in the massive bee deaths and decline of soil health. The companies that profit from making these pesticides have made it clear they won’t stop. Our petitions to the EPA and FDA are mostly ignored due to revolving door leadership between pesticide makers and government regulators. Is there an answer? Yes there is!
SMART Pesticides
Paul Stamets, the world’s leading mycologist, filed a patent in 2001 that was purposely given little attention. In the words of pesticide industry executives, this patent represents “The most disruptive technology that we have ever witnessed.” The biopesticides described in the patent reveals a near permanent, safe solution for over 200,000 species of insects and it all comes from a mushroom. After what is called ‘sporulation’ of a select entomopathogenic fungi (fungi that kill insects) the area becomes no longer suitable for any insect(s) the fungi are coded for. In addition, extracts of the entomopathogenic fungi can also steer insects in different directions.
This literally is a paradigm shift away from the entire idea of pesticides. Instead of having an aim to kill all problematic insect, a farmer could simply disperse a solution of pre-sporulation fungi amongst the crops. The insects would then simply live their lives around the crops paying no attention to them. This simple idea flies in the face of the current, poorly thought-out, practice of spraying ever increasing amounts of pesticides on resistant bugs. Going further, this biopesticide would also eliminate the need for round-up ready GMO seeds and BT seeds that grow the pesticides in the crop needlessly endangering us, the consumer. Perhaps the most enticing element of this biopesticide fungi is that it’s essentially free. According to the patent, it can be “cultivated on agricultural waste.” We are looking at a 100% safe, natural technology that literally can end all GMO and pesticide manufacturers overnight with a new class of SMART Pesticides.
“The matrix of pre-sporulating fungi can optionally be dried, freeze-dried, cooled and/or pelletized and packaged and reactivated for use as an effective insect attractant and/or biopesticide.” –Paul Stamets Patent for Mycoattractants and mycopesticides
Optimism Empowers
Even if we stop pesticide spraying now, scores of new research is confirming that our environment, food, soil, and bodies already carry traces of the chemicals. If the chemicals are so bad for us, there would be signs by now right? These are two common rebuttals from pesticide companies and individuals that don’t care to do their research. It’s okay, there just happens to be a patent to help with those issues as well. The US patent filed in 2003, once again from Paul Stamets, describes the utilization of a fungal delivery system for the purpose of
“ecological rehabilitation and restoration, preservation and improvement of habitats, bioremediation of toxic wastes and polluted sites, filtration of agricultural, mine and urban runoff, improvement of agricultural yields and control of biological organisms.”
In addition, there are many out there currently providing solutions to remove/detox any potential pesticide chemicals from the human body. Strategies like community gardens, urban forests, and the resurgence of permaculture are springing up rapidly to pave the way towards a steadily growing number of pesticide free dinner tables and families.
Time to Make History
On a bigger scale, GMO food and pesticides are merely symptoms of an opposite consciousness that is rapidly changing. Put another way, these symptoms are the unwanted gifts from out of control corporations that, by definition, have no empathy towards the needs, health, or life of The People. As Neil Young mentioned in his Starbucks Boycott, pesticide companies like Monsanto are, for the most part, not public-facing companies. As we are witnessing now with GMO brands, a boycott can severely damage their bottom line (lifeblood) but will not eliminate their business model. Due to the fact that they spend untold millions lobbying (purchasing) our politicians and regularly operate revolving doors between public and private positions means that only a paradigm shift will eliminate the entire industry. At that moment, which is approaching, pesticide manufacturers can decide if they would like to cease being the problem and assist in the solution.
The good news is that whatever decision they choose won’t matter. A shift in consciousness around pesticide and GMO use eliminates their influence and knocks them off their fictitious monetary pedestals they believe to be sitting on.

By Dr. Mercola
The fact that waterways in the United States contain residues of a multitude of drugs —including diabetes drugs, birth control pills, antidepressants, painkillers, and many other chemical compounds has been known for years.
Unfortunately, little has been done to remedy the situation. As a result, we’re now faced not only with continued overtreatment of humans, but we’re also facing environmental destruction courtesy of what could be referred to as “drug pollution.”
Our agricultural system is also contributing to water pollution that, in some areas, has led to an increase in diabetes and other health problems, which are then treated with—you guessed it—drugs. Those drugs end up in water treatment plants, rivers, and lakes, and the vicious cycle just continues ad nauseum...
Metformin Threatens Aquatic Life
According to recent research,1 the type 2 diabetes drug metformin is the most prevalent drug in Lake Michigan, and it may be altering the hormonal systems of fish in the lake. As reported by the Detroit Free Press:2
“[F]athead minnows were exposed to metformin at the levels found in Lake Michigan for four weeks. Male minnows showed disruption of their endocrine systems, producing a chemical messenger usually associated with females' egg production...”
Basically, the drug has a feminizing effect on male fish. Other “gender-bending” chemicals released into the environment, such as BPA and phthalates, have similar effects, causing male animals and humans to take on feminine characteristics.
One of the ironies in this situation is that type 2 diabetes can easily be treated and reversed without drugs. In fact, drug treatment can do far more harm than good. And now we’re seeing that overtreatment of diabetes with drugs is also causing environmental harm...
The study in question was led by Rebecca Klaper,3 a professor and research scientist at the University of Wisconsin's School of Freshwater Sciences. In 2013, she participated in a study4 in which they discovered that a number of drugs and chemical compounds persist in the water of Lake Michigan.
Besides metformin, progesterone (birth control pills), androstenedione (hormone treatment to increase testosterone), triclosan, and antibiotics were also found in the lake. According to the featured article:
“The drugs are not completely broken down by people's bodies after ingestion, are excreted and then are not fully removed by wastewater treatment processes. The flushing of old pharmaceuticals down the toilet contributes to the problem.
‘It's enough to raise an alarm bell that this might be something that causes changes in reproduction of fish,’ [Klaper] said. It's something that definitely warrants further study.
...Of all the drugs researchers tested for in Lake Michigan, metformin is found at the highest concentrations, at up to 40 parts per billion. More than 60 million metformin prescriptions were dispensed in the U.S. in 2013, according to drug market research firm IMS Health...”
Lack of Clean Drinking Water in California Leads to Increase in Diabetes
In related news, severe water contamination has led residents in rural farming communities in California to increase their consumption of soda and sugary beverages.
This in turn has led to increased rates of obesity and diabetes among the poor, according to a report5 by the University of California Davis Center for Poverty Research. Vice News6 writes:
"The prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in California is higher among low-income minority populations than white affluent populations. A combination of environmental factors, including a lack of access to healthy foods and nutrition education — and safe drinking water — likely contribute to these disparities...”
Data obtained from the Community Water Center shows that the San Joaquin Valley has the highest rate of drinking water contamination in California. The area also has the greatest number of water contamination violations. Studies have found that as many as one-quarter of all of all residents in the Central Valley have no access to safe drinking water!
When taking water from the tap, residents are being exposed to a number of hazardous contaminations—including nitrates, arsenic, coliform bacteria, pesticides, disinfectant byproducts, and uranium. Most of this contamination is caused by runoff from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
Water is essential for life and good health, and to think that entire communities in America have no access to clean drinking water is really quite surprising. What’s worse, the answer for these people—most of whom are poor—is to buy the cheapest drinks available, namely sodas and other sweetened drinks, which further accelerates their disease likelihood.
As noted by the researchers, ensuring access to clean drinking water is really critical in order to address rising obesity and diabetes rates among the poor. The fact that water treatment plants are not set up to filter out drugs is also solid justification for investing in a high-quality water filtration system for your home, if you can afford it.
Drug Treatment Is Not the Answer for Type 2 Diabetes
Mounting research7,8,9 suggests that many diabetics, especially the elderly, are not receiving any real benefit from their diabetic drug treatments. As reported by MedicineNet.com:10
“Researchers found that nearly two-thirds of older diabetics who are in poor health have been placed on a diabetes management regimen that strictly controls their blood sugar...
But these patients are achieving that goal through the use of medications that place them at greater risk of hypoglycemia, a reaction to overly low blood sugar that can cause abnormal heart rhythms, and dizziness or loss of consciousness...
Further, tight diabetes control did not appear to benefit the patients... The percentage of seniors with diabetes in poor health did not change in more than a decade, even though many had undergone years of aggressive blood sugar treatment.”
It’s unfortunate, but as Dr. Ron Rosedale wrote 10 years ago, in 2005, doctors cause diabetics to D.I.E from their flawed prescriptions, which stem from a basic lack of insight into the root cause of this disease. D.I.E., here, is a clever acronym for “Doctor Induced Exacerbation,” which includes premature death.
This is no surprise as diabetic drugs (oral hypoglycemic) and insulin do nothing to address the cause of type 2 diabetes. Research11 published in 2013 revealed that treating type 2 diabetes with insulin more than doubled patients’ risk of all-cause mortality. It also leads to:
Twice as many myocardial infarctions
1.4 time more strokes
2.1 time more neuropathy
1.4 times more cancer
1.7 time more major adverse cardiac events
3.5 times more renal complications
1.2 times more eye complications
2.2 times more deaths
Conventional medicine has type 2 diabetes pegged as a problem with blood sugar. This is incorrect, and it’s precisely why the medical community’s approach to its treatment is not getting anywhere. The reality is that diabetes is a disease rooted in insulin resistance12 and perhaps more importantly, a malfunction of leptin signaling, caused by chronically elevated insulin and leptin levels.
Treating type 2 diabetes with insulin is actually one of the worst things you can do, and recent research13 has come to the same conclusions that Dr. Rosedale warned us about nearly a decade ago, which is that treating type 2 diabetes with insulin can actually lead to the development of irreversible type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes.
Root Causes of Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes involves loss of insulin and leptin sensitivity. This makes it easily preventable and nearly 100 percent reversible without drugs. One of the driving forces behind type 2 diabetes is excessive dietary fructose, which has adverse effects on all of metabolic hormones—including two key players: insulin and leptin.
There is no question in my mind that, for most people, regularly consuming more than 25 grams of fructose per day will dramatically increase your risk of insulin/leptin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and chronic diseases—including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and more. It’s important to realize that even though fructose is relatively "low glycemic" on the front end, it actually reduces the receptor’s affinity for insulin, leading to chronic insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar on the back end.
Another major cause of type 2 diabetes is the consumption of the vast amount of glucose derived from the high-carbohydrate diet that has been recommended for the last half century by conventional medical and media recommendations. All carbohydrates that are not fiber will be quickly metabolized into sugar, and it makes little sense to eat large amounts of sugar to keep your blood sugar lower. It’s important to realize that type 2 diabetes is NOT the result of insufficient insulin production. It’s actually the result of too much insulin being produced on a chronic basis, primarily from eating the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet.
This overwhelms and “deafens” your insulin receptors, hence the term “insulin resistance.” It’s the chronically elevated insulin levels that make your body “resistant” to understanding the signals sent by the insulin. This also occurs with leptin. This is why taking insulin will actually worsen your insulin and leptin resistance over time. You do not need more insulin. You need to restore the sensitivity of your insulin and leptin receptors by keeping their levels low.
Metformin, which is contaminating Lake Michigan and other waterways, is not insulin but is one of the oldest oral hypoglycemic pills. It’s typically used as a first-line treatment for diabetes, but it’s also frequently inappropriately used in conjunction with insulin. Metformin is a drug that is supposed to make your body's tissues more sensitive to insulin but the reality is that it does nothing to address the cause of insulin resistance. It certainly is not a metformin deficiency. Previous research suggests you may be able to mimic the effects of metformin simply by taking two tablespoons of vinegar prior to your meals, without any of the adverse side effects.
If you’re still having trouble understanding why taking insulin is a terrible choice in type 2 diabetes consider this: when your blood sugar becomes elevated, insulin is released to direct the extra energy (sugar) into storage. A small amount is stored as a starch called glycogen, but the majority is stored as fat. Therefore, insulin’s primary role is notto lower your blood sugar, but rather to store this extra energy as fat for future needs when food may not be available. The fact that insulin lowers your blood sugar is merely a "side effect" of this energy storage process. Taking more insulin merely makes you fatter!
Your body's cells become desensitized to insulin, leptin, and other hormones by being overexposed to these hormones—be it by eating food that causes excessive secretion, or by injection. Diabetes treatments that concentrate merely on lowering blood sugar by adding insulin therefore tend to worsen rather than improve the actual cause of metabolic miscommunication.
So what’s the answer? Diet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle changes can virtually eliminate your risk of diabetes and reverse diabetes in nearly all cases. For detailed guidelines on how to do that, please see my in-depth report, How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes.
Environmental Factors That Aggravate Diabetes
Besides a high-sugar, low-fat diet and lack of exercise, other environmental factors can also raise your risk of insulin resistance and, ultimately, type 2 diabetes. For example, recent research shows that chronic sitting, stress, and shift work14 can aggravate metabolic dysfunction and lead to overweight and diabetes.
In the case of nightshift workers, recent research15 found that those who had worked the night shift for one to two years had a 17 percent higher risk for diabetes, compared to those who never worked nights. After the three-year mark, that risk rose to 23 percent. After working the graveyard shift for 10 years, the risk for diabetes jumped to 42 percent.
Lack of sleep is, overall, a fairly significant factor, whether the cause is due to stress, shift work, or some other factor. In one 2012 study,16 participants who got only 4.5 hours of sleep per night, four nights in a row, reduced their insulin sensitivity by 16 percent. Moreover, their fat cells’ insulin sensitivity was 30 percent lower, rivaling levels seen in those with diabetes or obesity. Additionally, sleep deprivation tends to lead to food cravings, particularly for sweet and starchy foods that promote insulin resistance.
Lack of sunlight is another overlooked component that can influence your weight, and hence, your risk of diabetes. As noted in a recent Time Magazine17 article:
“If you work in a windowless cubicle and you arrive at work before the sun comes up, you could be missing out on a powerful, all-natural weapon against obesity. A 2014 Northwestern University study18 found that exposure to the sun was associated with BMI, and that getting bright light in the morning hours seemed to have a slimming effect. Light helps to regulate circadian rhythms, which in turn regulate energy balance and expenditure, say the study authors. They suggest getting 20 to 30 minutes of sunlight between 8 a.m. and noon each day to avoid unwanted weight gain—yet another argument for walking to work or taking that mid-morning break!”
Cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins can also provoke diabetes through a few different mechanisms, including raising your insulin and blood sugar levels, and robbing your body of valuable nutrients that can impact your blood sugar levels. Two nutrients in particular, vitamin D and CoQ10, are both needed to maintain ideal blood glucose levels. Bringing us full-circle to where we started—with the discussion about water contamination—statins are also found in waterways and drinking water around the world.19
How Pure Is Your Drinking Water?
As noted earlier, water treatment facilities are not designed to filter out pharmaceutical compounds, so to prevent chronic low level exposure, you’d be wise to install a water filtration system in your home. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report20 on pharmaceuticals in drinking water, published in 2011:
“Studies on conventional drinking-water treatment processes have shown that coagulation is largely ineffective in removing pharmaceuticals. Free chlorine is able to remove up to approximately 50 percent of the pharmaceuticals investigated, whereas chloramines have lower removal efficiency. Compounds that showed high removal by free chlorine but low removal by chloramines include antibiotics, such as sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and erythromycin.
Advanced water treatment processes, such as ozonation, advanced oxidation, activated carbon, and membranes (e.g. nanofiltration, reverse osmosis), are able to achieve higher removal rates (above 99 percent) for targeted pharmaceutical compounds in various studies in the published literature.”
Besides purification, I also believe it’s critical to drink living water. Last year, I interviewed Dr. Gerald Pollack about his book, The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor. This fourth phase of water is referred to as “structured water” and is the type of water found in all of your cells. This water has many health properties. Water from a deep spring is one excellent source of structured water. The deeper, the better; as structured water is created under pressure.
There's a great website called FindaSpring.com where you can find a natural spring in your area. But you can also promote structured water through vortexing. I personally drink vortexed water nearly exclusively as I became a big fan of Viktor Schauberger, who did much pioneering work on vortexing about a century ago. Dr. Pollack found that by creating a vortex in a glass of water, you’re putting more energy into it, thereby increasing the structure of the water. According to Dr. Pollack, virtually ANY energy put into the water seems to create or build structured water.
Help Pass ARTICLE 31: Clean Water Is a 'Fundamental Human Right'
Last but not least, there’s an ongoing petition proposing the addition of one more article to the 30-article Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Please consider signing the petition for this important measure that is only going to get more and more critical as time goes on.
In 1948, the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were ratified by all the nations of the world. These 30 articles guaranteed a broad sweep of human rights across many human endeavors, from life to liberty to freedom of thought. Now, 60 years later, recognizing that over a billion people across the planet lack access to clean and potable water and that millions die each year as a result, it is time to add one more article to this historic declaration. Article 31, the Right to Water, states:
“Everyone has the right to clean accessible water, adequate for the health and well-being of the individual and family, and no one shall be deprived of such access of quality of water due to individual economic circumstance.”

Does Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity Exist?

Over the last year, there has been major debate about whether or not non celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) exists.  Now I know what many of you are already thinking…OF COURSE IT DOES!  Just ask anyone without celiac disease who has had a dramatic change in health as a result of going gluten free.
I have personally seen more than 5,000 patients over the last 15 years.  Many of them had previously tested negative for celiac disease and were told by their doctors to continue eating grain.  The mass confusion on this issue has two origins.
  1. Flawed Diagnostic Lab Testing.  Blood tests are aimed at identifying celiac disease.  These blood tests are non comprehensive, non specific, and have a tendency to come back falsely negative.   The truth is, even though there are over 400 different forms of gluten that have been identified, the blood tests only measure for the autoimmune reaction found in celiac disease, or a select few antibodies against a handful of gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye.  Even the most progressive labs like Cyrex only measure for a handful of different forms of gluten.  The test that most GI doctors use as a gold standard (The Biopsy) is more often negative than positive.  The reasons?  Most people do not develop the classic villous atrophy of the small intestine associated with celiac disease.  They have tissue damage in other areas of the body including the brain, liver, skin, muslces, and thyroid gland.  Remember that a biopsy is an investigation of the small intestine that includes microscopic samples only.  The actual surface area of the small intestine is roughly the size of a tennis court.  Taking microscopic cross sections is hardly a comprehensive or definitive evaluation.  In my personal experience, I have see as many as 9 negative biopsies in a row( over the course of many years) in the same patient before a 10th biopsy revealed a positive result.  Were the first nine biopsy evaluations wrong or did the damage take years to manifest before a biopsy could reveal it?
  2. Under Educated Physicians:  It is no mystery that gluten sensitivity is a nutritional problem.  When you combine that fact with the sad reality that the average GI doctor receives less than 7 hours of nutritional study throughout medical school, it is not hard to understand why so many doctors casually dismiss gluten as a potential health threat.   Add to this the fact that research in this area has exploded over the last decade.  It is a challenge even for the most dedicated doctor to stay abreast of all of the new findings in this area.  Unfortunately,  the overwhelming majority of doctors are in gluten denial.
New Research Confirms Gluten IS A PROBLEM (Again)
Even though the existence of non celiac gluten sensitivity has already been proven in other research, I feel like it is important to highlight the fact that other research groups continue to confirm it.  Another new study set out to identify whether of not gluten was a problem for those without diagnosed celiac disease.  The study involved 61 adults who self reported that eating gluten caused them harm.  This study was a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial.  In case you weren’t aware, that means that this study meets the criteria for the highest scientific standard.  What were the results?
When given hidden gluten, these patients reported multiple problems.  The study summary is quoted below:
According to the per-protocol analysis of data from the patients who completed the trial, intake of gluten significantly increased overall symptoms compared with placebo (P=.034). Abdominal bloating (P=.040) and pain (P=.047), among the intestinal symptoms, and foggy mind (P=.019), depression (P=.020), and aphthous stomatitis (P=.025), among the extra-intestinal symptoms, were significantly more severe when subjects received gluten than placebo.
So to clarify, patients being exposed to gluten without knowing they were being exposed to gluten experienced increased:
  • Abdominal bloating and pain
  • Brain Fog
  • Depression
  • Mouth Ulcers
One could argue that bloating, brain fog, and depression are very subjective symptoms.  Mouth ulcers on the other hand are physiochemical symptoms that cannot be blamed on a psychosomatic response.

Why All the Gluten Confusion?
The biggest reason for all of the confusion has to do with a lack of knowledge.  To date, there is no scientific consensus on the issue.  If we break down what we do know, it might make more sense.
Gluten is not a single entity.  Gluten refers to a family of proteins.  To date thousands of gluten proteins have been identified.  Most recently a study identified 400 new forms of gluten that are more damaging than the form of gluten doctors most commonly test for. There is NO LAB that tests for all of the different forms of gluten.
Gluten sensitivity is not a disease.  Much like a peanut allergy is not a disease.  Exposure to the gluten itself is the trigger necessary to create the negative outcome – i.e. some people who eat gluten experience severe migraine headache.  If they don’t eat gluten, they don’t experience the pain of the migraine.  In essence, the migraine is the body’s way of letting the person know that they should stop eating the gluten.  The diagram below breaks down how you should look at gluten sensitivity from this perspective:

Gluten Can Cause Damage in Multiple Ways
One of the other points of confusion relating to gluten has to do with the fact that the pathway for gluten induced damage is not simple.  There are a number of different ways that gluten can induce damage.   Some of the pathways can be measured and identified via lab tests, others can not be measured at all.
One of the most common is through an allergic response.  Classically, when people think of an allergy, they think of a acute reaction that leads to watery teary itchy eyes, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, hives on the skin, vomiting,  or diarrhea.  This type of allergy, also referred to as an IgE response occurs quickly – within three hours of ingestion or exposure.  Think of this type of reaction as an immune system canon going off.  Many experience a wheat allergy in this way.  Keep in mind that  a wheat allergy and a gluten sensitivity are not the same thing.
A delayed hypersensitivity reaction (see the right side of the diagram below) is a more subdued type of response.  Don’t think cannon, think bullet.  People don’t typically manifest severe or obvious problems with this type of reaction.  This type of immune response builds with time and exposure.  In other words the more a person is exposed to over time, the bigger the inflammatory problem becomes.
If you look at the diagram below, you can see all of the known immune pathways from both an acute and a delayed perspective.   The IgE side of the diagram is typically what an allergy doctor will measure.  When trying to identify celiac disease or gluten allergy, most labs only measure the IgG response to a handful of different types of gluten.  This is precisely why so many tests come back negative even though a person may experience dramatic health improvements by cutting out gluten.
  1. Acute Allergy Antibody Response -  IgE antibody formation and inflammation
  2. Delayed Allergy Antibody Response -  IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgD antibody formation and subsequent inflammation
  3. Delayed Allergy Immune Complex Response – non antibody response that causes chronic inflammation
  4. Delayed T-Cell response – a direct response by the immune T-cells leading to chronic inflammation
Other Ways Gluten Can Cause Health Problems
There are a number of additional types of responses that rarely get discussed.  Understanding some of them may be helpful for you to grasp the whole concept of gluten sensitivity better.
  1. Gluten Intolerance – not the same thing as a sensitivity, gluten intolerance refers to the inability to digest gluten.  This in turn leads to the protein putrefying in the gut.  The by product of putrefaction leads GI disruption in a number of ways to include the symptoms of IBS,  stress on the enzyme producing cells of the intestine and pancreas, and changes in healthy GI bacteria.
  2. Gluten Induced Dysbiosis – gluten has been shown to alter the normal bacterial flora in the gut.  This can lead to multiple types of digestive problems including leaky gut.
  3. Gluten Induced Leaky Gut – Dr. Alesio Fasano of Harvard discovered that gluten causes a direct intestinal permeability (leaky gut).  This reaction is not an immune reaction.  That is why the lab tests for celiac and gluten will never detect this.  Remember that lab tests only measure antibody responses.
  4. Molecular Mimicry – This is what can happen after the gut becomes “Leaky”.  The gut is responsible for handling all types of “undesirable characters” to include the viruses, bacteria, protozoans, prions, parasites, yeast, chemicals from food, chemicals in the water, etc.  Some of the molecules that the gut helps to manage can mimic the tissues within our own bodies.  When this happens, the molecular mimicry process leads to autoimmune diseases.  For example, you may be exposed to a bacteria in your food.  Your gut would typically handle this exposure without a problem, but because it is leaking, the bacterial proteins are able to access the blood stream.  These bacterial proteins can mimic or look like the cartilage in your joints.  If this happens, your immune system not only attacks the bacterial proteins, but it also starts to attack your cartilage.  This in turn causes joint pain and inflammation.
  5. Gluten Induced Nutritional Loss – One of the biggest secondary effects of gluten is the loss of vitamins and minerals.  This can occur as a result of GI damage and the subsequent inability to process, digest, and absorb nutrients, but it can also be as a result of excessive inflammation.  Increased inflammation puts a greater demand on the body’s vitamin and mineral storage.
Guilt By Association – Damage not Caused by GLUTEN
Then we get to the non gluten aspects of grain that can also contribute to damage.  These are the elements that are often confused as gluten sensitivity, and this is why some research shows that gluten proteins are not a problem.
  1. Lectins and other grain protective proteins - Remember what grains are – the seeds of grass…and like all seeds, they are designed to protect and allow for the perpetuation of their species.  The seeds themselves are physically hard, hard to digest, but they also contain grain protective proteins that can cause inflammation and inhibit our ability to digest them.  Examples of these non gluten proteins have been discovered over the last several years, but they are rarely discussed within the confines of gluten sensitivity. Some of these protein families include: Serpins, Purinins, and α-amylase/protease inhibitors.
  2. Chemicals Used in Food Processing – There are a number of chemicals used in food processing that can insight gluten like symptoms.  One of the most common additives is MSG.  Bromine is chemical commonly added to flour as a dough conditioner.  It can enhance the detrimental effects of gluten.  Another common enzyme process used for dairy manufacturing is microbial transglutaminase.  This process creates a dairy product that can mimic gluten proteins.  Carrageenan is another compound used to thicken foods.  It has been shown to cause gluten like symptoms as well.
  3. Chemicals Used in Grain Production – The most notable is glyphosate – AKA Roundup.  This chemical pesticide has been shown to cause many of the same symptoms as those seen in gluten sensitivity.  Some believe that it is glyphosate, not gluten, that is responsible for many of the diseases we see gluten contribute to.  I have personally not seen this with my patients.  In my experience, those with gluten sensitivity who attempt to eat organic grain products continue to have reactions to the gluten.
  4. Grains are High in FODMAPS – these are difficult to digest carbohydrates that can contribute to gas, bloating, and irritable bowel symptoms.  Wheat and corn sugars are especially high in them.
The Best Way to Determine Gluten Sensitivity
To date, no lab exists that is capable of measuring all of the different types of immune responses to all the different types of gluten proteins.  Many will argue that an elimination diet is the best way to determine gluten sensitivity.  I don’t fully agree with this premise.  Yes, it is a smart thing to pay attention to the food you eat and how it makes you feel.  If you feel bad eating a food, the common sense thing to do is to avoid it.  However; many people suffer from silent, internal inflammation for years before properly diagnosed.   It can take several decades of inflammatory damage before a person starts to have open symptoms of disease.  An elimination diet does not identify these people.
Understanding that gluten sensitivity is not a disease, but rather a state of genetics, it makes better sense to default to genetic testing as the most accurate screening tool.  To date we have discovered two gene patterns that are present in the majority of those who have celiac disease.  These genes are referred to as the HLA-DQ genes (there is an alpha1 and a beta 1 gene).  These genes are responsible for building a receptor on the surface of your immune cells.  The job of this receptor is to help the immune system recognize good from bad.  Having a gluten sensitive gene pattern directly increases the likelihood that your body will look at gluten as an enemy.  The side effect of this response is inflammation.  The more gluten exposure over time, the greater the inflammatory response.

As stated above, there are thousands of different types of gluten proteins that have the potential to interact with the HLA-DQ receptors on your immune cells.  Knowing your gluten gene pattern is helpful in determining whether or not gluten consumption poses a risk of creating inflammation.  Not knowing is guessing.

February, 2015 Coldest Month in History

Frozen waves are photographed on Nantucket, Massachusetts. Photo by Jonathan Nimerfroh.
If you live in a handful of cities in the Northeast, you weathered the coldest month since reliable records were first kept, which for most places means a century or more of weather data. The average temperature in Bangor Maine came in at 6.2 degrees for February, said Corey Bogel, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. That is about 15 degrees below normal and easily beats the old record of 8.4 degrees, from January 1994.
Further south the unusually cold winter of Massachusetts produced an incredible phenomenon 100 miles southeast of Boston on the island of Nantucket recently: frozen waves, or, as some are describing them, Slurpee waves. “When I got to the top of the dunes, I could see that about 300 yards out from the shoreline the ocean was starting to freeze,” said Jonathan Nimerfroh.
GFS model forecasts at the end of February showed some snow for portions of all 50 states in the next seven days and that includes Hawaii.

February 2015 was also Toronto’s coldest month ever. Over 1,900 Low Min Records were broken (272 tied) from Feb 19 to Feb 25, 2015 according to NOAA. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Cuba was also recorded in February. The Cuban Institute of Meteorology reported that last Friday morning (Feb 20) the temperature fell to one degree Celsius (33.8o F) in the town of Union Reyes in western Matanzas province. The previous record in Union de Reyes was set on February 18, 1996, at 2.5 degrees.
Environment Canada has confirmed this February was the coldest February in more than 100 years. The average temperature in Montreal last month was -15C. The previous record of -14.5C was set in 1979.
Between Feb. 1 and 26, Montreal was subjected to temperatures five to nine degrees lower than normal. The last time it was that cold in February was in 1889, and even that isn’t certain, as Environment Canada points out that data from that year is less reliable.
Environment Canada said Quebec City had 19 days below -20C, while it usually has nine. Montreal had 12 days below -20C, while the norm is five. And the Saguenay had nine days under -30C (emphasis theirs), while the norm is close to two.

“It’s clear the Maritimes’ weather has crossed the line from difficult to dangerous.” See video on this page to see how bad it’s getting in Eastern Canada after a huge blizzard dumped over 80 cm (2½ feet) of snow on Prince Edward Island. In New Brunswick the snow piled up in huge drifts, in some cases trapping people inside.
The Great Lakes, once again almost entirely covered in ice at the end of the month, is causing worry in the shipping industry. “Obviously it’s been another brutal winter,” said Glen Nekvasil, vice president of the Lake Carriers’ Association. “If it keeps going it will be a challenging resumption to navigation when we get going again in March.”
“The lakes, at least Superior, Huron and Erie, are 95 or 96 percent covered, and about 85.5 percent total, which is a little more ice this year than at the same time last year,” said George Leshkevich, a research scientist based at NOAA’s office in Ann Arbor, Mich. Last year’s ice coverage was considered epic. It topped out at 92.6 percent coverage on March 6.

Sea ice coverage in the Antarctic continues to increase, according to data released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The ocean’s sea ice levels were 44.6% higher than the 1981-2010 average, breaking a prevous record set in 2008 by 220,000 square miles. This is strange since it is summer down at the South Pole.
Despite dire predictions that the North Pole would be ice-free in the near future, Arctic Sea ice levels have been more stable than scientists predicted.
So far this winter, Arctic Sea ice levels are above where they were at the same time last winter and are well within the standard deviation of the 1981 to 2010 variation, according to daily sea ice data.
Europe’s CryoSat-2 satellite found that sea-ice volumes for the fall of 2014 were above the average extent for the last five years. Sea-ice levels were up sharply from 2011 and 2012, according to the satellite– only slightly lower than 2013 levels.
In 2013, CryoSat-2 found that Arctic sea ice levels increased 50% at the end of the region’s melting season. Arctic sea-ice coverage reached 2,100 cubic miles by that time, up from 1,400 cubic miles during the same time in 2012.
What great cause could unite Prince Charles, President Obama, the Pope, the Arab Oil sheiks, the United Nations, the European Union, the Russians, the Chinese, Pacific Island Nations, most undeveloped countries, the glitterati of Hollywood, left-wing politicians, unrepentant reds, government media, the climate research industry, Big Oil, Big Gas and the Green Blob? It must be something posing a clear and urgent danger to all humanity.

U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres reveals the real reason behind global warming scare. At a news conference in Brussels, Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism. "This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution," she said.
It has been completely discredited. Climategate revealed emails between Climate Change Alarmists detailing how even they couldn’t find any evidence of warming. Records clearly show there has been no warming for the past 17 years. And today the nation shivers in a seemingly never ending winter of massive snow storms and record breaking freezing temperatures. Yet the mantra pounds on about the coming disaster of Climate Change. Why do they cling to it? What keeps them going?
Yahoo News published in early March the following climate (religious) statement. “In parched California, rainfall patterns are essentially the same as they were 120 years ago, but humans have made it warmer and that added heat is driving the state’s crippling drought, according to a new study by climate scientists. According the latest study, warm temperatures dry out soils and cause precipitation to fall as rain rather than snow, thus reducing annual snowpack essential for irrigation.

However on the same day we read, “A cold snap early Monday morning sent hail down in Huntington Beach, shocking people in the downtown area who weren’t expecting white stuff to come falling from the sky. The hail arrived as a winter storm pounded parts of Southern California on Monday, turning area beaches into a ‘winter wonderland’ and dumping up to 8 inches of snow on the mountains. In L.A. County, hail also fell, covering streets and cars on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.”
In addition, more evidence of global warming was seen in Mason City, Iowa, which hit a record low of 18 degrees below zero at 6 a.m. Friday, shattering its 115-year-old record for Feb. 27 of 12-below, set in 1899, the National Weather Service said.
Global warming climate experts will go to their graves like religious fanatics holding onto their precious beliefs and there is nothing we can do about that. The God of Nature has seen fit to disprove their idiotic theories and computer models in a most powerful and mocking way because they would not listen to real scientists who have known better for the 17 years it has been cooling. Like most religious fundamentalists they get angry and seek to put down what they say are climate change deniers but there is not a soul that I know that denies that climate is always changing day by day.
To all those people who cling to the theory of global warming, and it is just a theory obviously,  to them we should ask if record cold weather and record snow does not disprove the theory of global warming and to please state exactly what would disprove it? Short-term weather aberrations are not what we have this winter. Last winter was almost as brutal plus the fact (which global warming maniacs ignore) that it has been getting gradually colder for almost two decades.

In this book (due to be published end of March) we have the actual reality of climate presented along with a long list of scientists, weathermen and the history of warming and cooling on earth to sustain the fact that our collective futures has a lot of cold in store for us. The cold is a witness to the lack of heat though in global warming minds they see it in a different convoluted way. All logic is abandoned with the senseless thought that it is colder because it is warmer.

Pineapple Juice Found To Dissolve Mucus To 5x Faster Than Regular Counter Cough Syrups

Posted Monday, March 2, 2015 at 04:39pm EST
Studies show that this tropical fruit mixed with other ingredients can be an effective medicine for relief with those who have tuberculosis and other coughing issues.
In one case study, with a mixture of raw pineapple juice, raw honey, cayenne pepper and salt helped dissolve mucus in the lungs of patients with tuberculosis.  In other instances, studies showed that the raw extracts from pineapple had the ability to dissolve mucus up to 5x faster then regular over-the-counter cough syrups.  With the recovery time being 4x quicker.
So why does this tropical fruit have the impact that it does?  The fruit contains bromelain, which is an enzyme responsible for fighting inflammation and helping in digestion. Along with the fact that it also has a great deal of manganese, which aids in the formation of connective tissue and improving nerve function. Knowing that makes it easy to see how it helps fight coughs and fight mucus build-up in the lungs.
Pineapple is an excellent source of vitamin C which fights free radicals and allows airways to function more effectively. Pineapple has many other health benefits as it has shown to provide arthritis relief, help combat cancers of the breast, throat and mouth, and manage blood pressure.
All Natural DIY Pineapple Cough Syrup
What You Will Need
2 thick slices of fresh pineapple, peel removed, but core intact (about two good cups)
1 Tbsp honey
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (omit or reduce for children)
a thumb sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced or rough chopped
juice of 1 lemon
Instructions
Give the pineapple a rough chop, including the core, which is not only edible but particularly healthy.
Blend everything up in a blender or food processor until smooth.
Use as is, or push the mixture through a mesh strainer to get a smoother syrup.
Keep in the refrigerator and take as needed.
Notes
Do not give anything with honey to children under 1 year old. If you have a persistent cough, seek medical attention.
