By Dr. Becker
A study published last year in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health1 indicates that flame retardant chemicals (polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs) in house dust are linked to the growing problem of thyroid disease in pet cats. The study was conducted by researchers at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of housecats, with over 10 percent of kitties over the age of 10 diagnosed with the disease. Since hyperthyroidism was discovered fairly recently (1979), the sudden appearance and rapid increase in cases in both humans and cats has generated several studies in a search for potential causes.
PBDEs are used as flame retardants in furniture and electronics. The compounds can leak from these products into the environment.
PBDEs are known endocrine and thyroid disruptors, so it’s likely no coincidence that widespread use of these flame retardant chemicals began right before the first diagnoses of hyperthyroidism.
Researchers Evaluate PBDE Levels in Canned Cat Food and House Dust
The purpose of the University of Illinois study was to explore the role of PBDEs in the development of hyperthyroidism in cats. The researchers evaluated the diet (canned cat food), environment (specifically, house dust) and blood serum of kitties that were hyperthyroid as well as cats with normal thyroid function. A small number of feral cats were also used in the study.
They set out to discover whether toxin loads in the blood of same age cats correlated with thyroid dysfunction in the hyperthyroid kitties.
They also measured commercial canned cat foods and house dust for PBDE content to determine which likely posed the greater risk.
Third, they looked for a link between blood PBDE levels, environmental or nutritional PBDE exposure, and thyroid function.
What the Study Showed
Blood PBDE concentrations in the cats with normal thyroids were not all that different from those of hyperthyroid kitties. However, as you might expect, concentrations were much lower in feral cats than in either of the groups of pet cats.
Total PBDEs in canned cat food had a range of 0.42 to 3.1 ng/g. In house dust, the range was much higher at 510 to 95,000 ng/g.
And here’s where it gets interesting. The level of PBDEs in the dust of homes of cats with normal thyroids was from 510 to 4,900 ng/g, while the level in the homes of hyperthyroid cats ranged from 1,100 to 95,000 ng/g – a great deal higher. In addition, the level of dust PBDEs was closely linked to serum total blood T4 concentrations. Dust PBDEs and serum total T4 concentrations were also significantly related. (Greater than normal levels of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, or T4, in the blood signify an overactive thyroid.)
These study results indicate housecats are primarily exposed to flame retardant chemicals by ingesting house dust – which of course occurs every time they groom themselves. These findings are similar to studies linking feline malignant lymphoma with cats that live with cigarette smokers.
Dogs Also Have Significant Exposure to PBDEs
A 2007 study conducted at Indiana University2 revealed significant blood concentrations of PBDEs in pet dogs. Dogs had levels 5 to 10 times higher than those of humans living in North America, and previous studies have shown levels in cats that are 20 to 100 higher than are found in humans.
Dogs appear to metabolize these chemicals faster than cats do. In addition, dogs produce an enzyme that breaks down organochlorine pesticides, and researchers theorize something similar could be going on with the breakdown of PBDEs.
PBDE Sources
PBDEs have been added to consumer products since the 1970s as fire retardants. These compounds inside certain products increase the temperature it takes to make them burn, which makes the products more flame-resistant.
Items around your home and office that may contain PBDEs include:
Polyurethane foam products – upholstered furniture, mattresses, pillows
Computers, printers, copiers, scanners, faxes
Carpet padding
Toner cartridges
Vehicle seat covers
TVs and TV remote controls
Kitchen appliances
Video equipment
Fans
Blow dryers
Water heaters
Cell phones

PBDEs leak from products when they heat up during use or when the product begins to deteriorate.
Avoiding PDBE Exposure
Fortunately, most new foam products are not likely to have PBDEs added. If you have foam items in your home, office or vehicle that were purchased before 2005, however, they probably contain PBDEs. These items might include: carpet padding, upholstered couches and chairs, mattresses and mattress pads, foam-filled pillows and the seats in your vehicle.
The Environmental Working Group offers some excellent tips to help limit your family’s and pet’s exposure to PBDE-containing products:
  • Exercise caution with foam items. Replace any item in which the foam is exposed or misshapen (an indicator the foam is breaking down and releasing toxic compounds into the environment).
  • Use only vacuums with HEPA filters, which are better at trapping small dust particles and are more efficient at removing contaminants and allergens from your home or office. The same principle applies to indoor air cleaners with HEPA filters.
  • Replace rather than reupholster foam furniture. Even PBDE-free furniture can contain other types of fire retardants with potentially harmful effects.
  • Remove old carpet with care. The padding beneath may contain PBDEs.
  • When buying a new product, ask what type of fire retardant it contains. Try to avoid purchasing items containing brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Go with less flammable materials, for example, cotton, wool and leather. Keep in mind that ‘natural’ latex foam and natural cotton are flammable and by law require the addition of a fire retardant.

What – You Still Think Salt Consumption Causes High Blood Pressure?

What – You Still Think Salt Consumption Causes High Blood Pressure? What – You Still Think Salt Consumption Causes High Blood Pressure?

October 23rd, 2013
Updated 10/23/2013 at 8:38 am

High sodium intake as a source of high blood pressure has been an unchallenged dogmatic mantra for decades. But a few renegade MDs, several naturopaths, and chiropractors have challenged the unproven hypothesis of salt being the basis of high blood pressure (HBP). Turns out that the link between high sodium intake and elevated blood pressure is a false one.
Pure, unrefined salt is actually a necessary and helpful dietary component. Perhaps the most well known salt promoter is Dr. David Brownstein, MD, author of Salt Your Way to Health. Refined commercial table salt, used excessively in processed foods, is processed with toxic chemicals and stripped of its inherent nutritional value. It’s mostly poison with very little nutrition, though even using table salt often won’t lead to high blood pressure.
Actually, those with high blood pressure (and everyone, really) should just consume more foods rich in potassium. Meta-analysis’ show how low potassium intake has the same impact on blood pressure as high salt consumption – the real problem is an imbalance between sodium and potassium.

It appears the new HBP dietary villain could be high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which has been already linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular health issues.
HFCS is more commonly used in processed foods, fruit juices, sweets, and sodas than cane or beet sugar. It’s cheaper than sucrose (table sugar), and satisfies the “sweet tooth” SAD (standard American diet) consumers’ desire.
According to the USDA, HFCS consumption has increased significantly from 1970 to 2005, and it is now the number one source of empty calories in America. In fact, Americans eat approximately 35 lbs on average of high-fructose corn syrup each year.
How HFCS Contributes to Hypertension or High Blood Pressure
Fructose in fruit is tied to several other nutritional compounds that balance out fructose’s negative aspects. But fructose isolated from corn and made into a syrup is too much for the body to metabolize. Even table sugar metabolizes better.
Robert H. Lustig, MD, a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explains how the rise in HFCS use over the past three to four decades is behind the obesity and diabetes epidemic, both of which contribute to high blood pressure.
HFCS or “corn sugar” or “corn syrup” initiates a toxic overload from insufficient metabolism. The liver doesn’t convert isolated, concentrated fructose into energy well and stores it as fat instead. Add this to the dangers of GMO corn with traces of extremely toxic glyphosate herbicides and mercury as a byproduct from the conversion process. This toxic overload leads to obesity, fatty liver, other liver complications, and kidney disease.
Dr. Richard Johnson of the University of Colorado has been a researcher of investigations into HFCS and high blood pressure. His research revealed definite links of high HFCS consumption to high blood pressure.

What’s more, one of the toxic waste products remaining in the body from regular HFCS consumption is uric acid. A test of 17 subjects with high uric acid counts showed all 17 with high blood pressure. Uric acid inhibits nitric oxide (NO) in the blood vessels.
Nitric oxide is a volatile gas that helps maintain blood vessel elasticity. When that elasticity decreases, blood pressure increases. Here are 4 ways to increase nitric oxide naturally.
A safe range of uric acid is from 3 to 5.5 milligrams per deciliter (0.1 liter), with 4 mg/dl ideal for men and 3.5 mg/dl for women. Higher numbers threaten blood pressure increases. You can ask your health professional about a uric acid test or shop the internet by inserting “uric acid blood testing” in your search engine.

28 Signs That The West Coast Is Being Absolutely Fried With Nuclear Radiation From Fukushima28 Signs That The West Coast Is Being Absolutely Fried With Nuclear Radiation From Fukushima

Michael Snyder

The map below comes from the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center. It shows that radiation levels at radiation monitoring stations all over the country are elevated. As you will notice, this is particularly true along the west coast of the United States. Every single day, 300 tons of radioactive water from Fukushima enters the Pacific Ocean. That means that the total amount of radioactive material released from Fukushima is constantly increasing, and it is steadily building up in our food chain.

Ultimately, all of this nuclear radiation will outlive all of us by a very wide margin. They are saying that it could take up to 40 years to clean up the Fukushima disaster, and meanwhile countless innocent people will develop cancer and other health problems as a result of exposure to high levels of nuclear radiation. We are talking about a nuclear disaster that is absolutely unprecedented, and it is constantly getting worse. The following are 28 signs that the west coast of North America is being absolutely fried with nuclear radiation from Fukushima…

1. Polar bears, seals and walruses along the Alaska coastline are suffering from fur loss and open sores…
Wildlife experts are studying whether fur loss and open sores detected in nine polar bears in recent weeks is widespread and related to similar incidents among seals and walruses.
The bears were among 33 spotted near Barrow, Alaska, during routine survey work along the Arctic coastline. Tests showed they had “alopecia, or loss of fur, and other skin lesions,” the U.S. Geological Survey said in a statement.

  • 2. There is an epidemic of sea lion deaths along the California coastline…
At island rookeries off the Southern California coast, 45 percent of the pups born in June have died, said Sharon Melin, a wildlife biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service based in Seattle. Normally, less than one-third of the pups would die.   It’s gotten so bad in the past two weeks that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event.”
    3. Along the Pacific coast of Canada and the Alaska coastline, the population of sockeye salmon is at a historic low.  Many are blaming Fukushima.

    4. Something is causing fish all along the west coast of Canada to bleed from their gills, bellies and eyeballs.

    5. A vast field of radioactive debris from Fukushima that is approximately the size of California has crossed the Pacific Ocean and is starting to collide with the west coast.

    6. It is being projected that the radioactivity of coastal waters off the U.S. west coast could double over the next five to six years.

    7. Experts have found very high levels of cesium-137 in plankton living in the waters of the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the west coast.

    8. One test in California found that 15 out of 15 bluefin tuna were contaminated with radiation from Fukushima.

    9. Back in 2012, the Vancouver Sun reported that cesium-137 was being found in a very high percentage of the fish that Japan was selling to Canada…

    • 73 percent of mackerel tested
    • 91 percent of the halibut
    • 92 percent of the sardines
    • 93 percent of the tuna and eel
    • 94 percent of the cod and anchovies
    • 100 percent of the carp, seaweed, shark and monkfish

    10. Canadian authorities are finding extremely high levels of nuclear radiation in certain fish samples…
Some fish samples tested to date have had very high levels of radiation: one sea bass sample collected in July, for example, had 1,000 becquerels per kilogram of cesium.
    11. Some experts believe that we could see very high levels of cancer along the west coast just from people eating contaminated fish…
“Look at what’s going on now: They’re dumping huge amounts of radioactivity into the ocean — no one expected that in 2011,” Daniel Hirsch, a nuclear policy lecturer at the University of California-Santa Cruz, told Global Security Newswire. “We could have large numbers of cancer from ingestion of fish.”
    12. BBC News recently reported that radiation levels around Fukushima are “18 times higher” than previously believed.

    13. An EU-funded study concluded that Fukushima released up to 210 quadrillion becquerels of cesium-137 into the atmosphere.

    14. Atmospheric radiation from Fukushima reached the west coast of the United States within a few days back in 2011.

    15. At this point, 300 tons of contaminated water is pouring into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima every single day.

    16. A senior researcher of marine chemistry at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Meteorological Research Institute says that “30 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium and 30 billion becquerels of radioactive strontium” are being released into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima every single day.

    17. According to Tepco, a total of somewhere between 20 trillion and 40 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium have gotten into the Pacific Ocean since the Fukushima disaster first began.

    18. According to a professor at Tokyo University, 3 gigabecquerels of cesium-137 are flowing into the port at Fukushima Daiichi every single day.

    19. It has been estimated that up to 100 times as much nuclear radiation has been released into the ocean from Fukushima than was released during the entire Chernobyl disaster.

    20. One recent study concluded that a very large plume of cesium-137 from the Fukushima disaster will start flowing into U.S. coastal waters early next year…
Ocean simulations showed that the plume of radioactive cesium-137 released by the Fukushima disaster in 2011 could begin flowing into U.S. coastal waters starting in early 2014 and peak in 2016.
    21. It is being projected that significant levels of cesium-137 will reach every corner of the Pacific Ocean by the year 2020.

    22. It is being projected that the entire Pacific Ocean will soon “have cesium levels 5 to 10 times higher” than what we witnessed during the era of heavy atomic bomb testing in the Pacific many decades ago.

    23. The immense amounts of nuclear radiation getting into the water in the Pacific Ocean has caused environmental activist Joe Martino to issue the following warning…
Your days of eating Pacific Ocean fish are over.
    24. The Iodine-131, Cesium-137 and Strontium-90 that are constantly coming from Fukushima are going to affect the health of those living the the northern hemisphere for a very, very long time.  Just consider what Harvey Wasserman had to say about this…
Iodine-131, for example, can be ingested into the thyroid, where it emits beta particles (electrons) that damage tissue. A plague of damaged thyroids has already been reported among as many as 40 percent of the children in the Fukushima area. That percentage can only go higher. In developing youngsters, it can stunt both physical and mental growth. Among adults it causes a very wide range of ancillary ailments, including cancer.

Strontium-90’s half-life is around 29 years. It mimics calcium and goes to our bones.
    25. According to a recent Planet Infowars report, the California coastline is being transformed into “a dead zone”…
The California coastline is becoming like a dead zone.
If you haven’t been to a California beach lately, you probably don’t know that the rocks are unnaturally CLEAN – there’s hardly any kelp, barnacles, sea urchins, etc. anymore and the tide pools are similarly eerily devoid of crabs, snails and other scurrying signs of life… and especially as compared to 10 – 15 years ago when one was wise to wear tennis shoes on a trip to the beach in order to avoid cutting one’s feet on all the STUFF of life – broken shells, bones, glass, driftwood, etc.
There are also days when I am hard-pressed to find even a half dozen seagulls and/or terns on the county beach.
You can still find a few gulls trolling the picnic areas and some of the restaurants (with outdoor seating areas) for food, of course, but, when I think back to 10 – 15 years ago, the skies and ALL the beaches were literally filled with seagulls and the haunting sound of their cries both day and night…
    NOW it’s unnaturally quiet.

    26. A study conducted last year came to the conclusion that radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster could negatively affect human life along the west coast of North America from Mexico to Alaska “for decades”.

    27. According to the Wall Street Journal, it is being projected that the cleanup of Fukushima could take up to 40 years to complete.

    28. Yale Professor Charles Perrow is warning that if the cleanup of Fukushima is not handled with 100% precision that humanity could be threatened "for thousands of years"…
Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years.
Are you starting to understand why so many people are so deeply concerned about what is going on at Fukushima?

    Ate a High-Fat Diet - Lost 200 lbs

    Andreas Eenfeldt, MD.

The frequent reader here has no doubt heard Tommy Runesson's impressive story before. But now it's also in the Swedish newspaper Corren and we get to admire some new pictures of Tommy. Like the one above - it's probably time for a new pair of pants.

Here's the full article, translated into English.

    Ate a High-Fat Diet - Lost 200 lbs

In two years Tommy Runesson lost 200 lbs. By exercising and eating fruit? No, with fat.

Initially, the diabetes nurse had trouble believing what she saw. The patient Tommy Runesson's blood sugar, cholesterol and lipid levels just kept improving, while he was eating exactly the opposite of what the official dietary guidelines dictate.

Tommy is full of contradictions in many ways. Despite always being obese, he has felt fine both physically and mentally. He has no idea what his health markers looked like when he was obese, as he had hardly ever seen a doctor. But he can take a guess...

    - Oddly enough, I was never bullied, nor did I feel awkward as a fat boy. Perhaps someone yelled "fatso" at me in school at times, but it never stuck with me.

Tommy has a background as a trained chef and has always loved food, "real" food as he calls it, in the old traditional style. Meat and fish and rich sauces with piles of pasta, bread and potatoes. And Coca Cola. He had big portions and was obese already as a child. But he never had a sweet tooth, and was never particularly fond of pastries and candy.

As he felt fine, he didn't consider losing weight, even though deep inside he of course knew he should.

    So, what happened?

    - Well, this is actually pretty funny. I was googling for new recipes for béarnaise sauce and happened to end up on the journalist Sten Sture Skaldeman's homepage www.skaldeman.se (in Swedish). I was caught up in his life story, how he lost a weight loss contest and began to eat himself to death. He ate all the things that were good and forbidden and ignored the rest. To his great surprise all of his 155 unhealthy pounds started to melt off. And he's still alive! His motto is: "If we eat what we're meant to eat, we'll have the body we're meant to have."

    - It's amazing that one person's attempt at eating himself to death started a national movement. After two years I had lost 200 lbs (90kg), all my health markers are excellent and I haven't experienced a second of suffering or hunger. This is an enjoyable method that I'll never let go of. My mother, father and brother have all joined too.

Your food choices are very unusual, an ultra-strict LCHF diet, and many may react to the amount of butter you consume.

    - I've always loved herb butter, béarnaise sauce and mayonnaise. If you have a problem with these, I suggest that at least you choose fattier meat cuts. Pork loin instead of pork chops. Entrecote instead of steak and fillet. Chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts. It's marbled, tastes better and is cheaper. You don't have to be as strict as I am. The fat can also just come from full-fat cream, cheese and sour cream, but they contain a little more carbohydrates. The trick with an LCHF diet is that the fat keeps you satiated.

From reading your blog, we understand that you are a number nerd. Your health markers are constantly updated.

    - Yes, I think it's interesting. I'm since long enjoying a completely flat blood sugar level, it never dips.

Critics argue that the climate will collapse if we all pig out on meat.

    - We shouldn't. We shouldn't increase the amount of protein, just skip the carbohydrates and add saturated fat.

Sugar vs. other carbohydrates, isn't this where opinions differ?

    - Yes, all agree that refined sugar is bad. But I also claim that starchy carbohydrates, grain flours, that are converted to sugar in the digestive tract, are equally great villains.

The acronym LCHF has become negatively charged.

    - Yes, many have begun to call it a low-carb diet instead. The acronym LCHF is a Swedish invention, and I don't hide the fact that it probably saved my life. I will gladly debate with any dietitian. I am well read, and I don't exactly represent the only success story in this area. Now I am a trained diet counselor and I give lectures.

Wherein lies the controversial part in this?

    - There's no big money involved in LCHF, but there certainly is in the food industry and the dietary advice feeding the pharmaceutical industry. It's about prestige and money. There are diabetes clinics that hand out brochures on how to eat, published by pharmaceutical companies selling insulin! Imagine that all dietitians, who are now discouraging fat consumption, would suddenly say "oops, we were wrong!" They'd then be admitting that their advice has led to a deterioating quality of life for hundreds of thousands of diabetics and obese patients.

    - But time is running out. Many people's lives are at stake.

Astaxanthin: The Most Powerful Nutrient Ever Discovered for Eye Health

    October 21, 2013

    By Dr. Mercola
Scientists long ago discovered that a class of naturally-occurring pigments called carotenoids held powerful antioxidant properties that are crucial for your health.
But only recently has one particular carotenoid jumped to the forefront in terms of its status as a “super nutrient,” becoming the focus of a large and growing number of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
    This carotenoid is called astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis when its water supply dries up, forcing it to protect itself from ultraviolet radiation.

Astaxanthin is leaps and bounds more powerful than beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, lycopene, and lutein–other members of its chemical family. Astaxanthin exhibits VERY STRONG free radical scavenging activity, and protects your cells, organs, and body tissues from oxidative damage.
What makes astaxanthin so different from other nutritional elements? And what can it do for your health?
The answers to these questions will form the basis of the remainder of this article, and I think you’ll be quite impressed.
Astaxanthin Is in a League of Its Own
There are many properties that make this carotenoid special. Here are the main differences:
    • Astaxanthin is by far the most powerful carotenoid antioxidant when it comes to free radical scavenging: it is 65 times more powerful than vitamin C, 54 times more powerful than beta-carotene, and 14 times more powerful than vitamin E.
    • Astaxanthin is far more effective than other carotenoids at “singlet oxygen quenching,” which is a particular type of oxidation. The damaging effects of sunlight and various organic materials are caused by this less-stable form of oxygen. Astaxanthin is 550 times more powerful than vitamin E and 11 times more powerful than beta-carotene at neutralizing this singlet oxygen.
    • Astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier AND the blood-retinal barrier (beta-carotene and lycopene do not), which has huge implications for the health of your eyes.
    • It is soluble in lipids, so it incorporates into cell membranes.
    • It is a potent UVB absorber.
    • It reduces DNA damage.
    • It is a very powerful natural anti-inflammatory.
    • No adverse reactions have been found for people taking astaxanthin.
    • It is virtually impossible to obtain the recommended daily amount of astaxanthin from diet alone because there are only two prime sources: microalgae and sea creatures that consume the algae (such as salmon, shellfish, and krill).
    Carotenoids 101
Carotenoids are the compounds in your foods that give you that vibrant cornucopia of color — from green grasses to red beets, to the spectacular yellows and oranges of your bell peppers — as well as all of the beautiful flowers in your garden.
Almost all living things obtain their colors from natural pigments.
Beyond their visual splendor, these pigments have deeper value in that they carry out a variety of important biological functions. They are critical to the photosynthetic process and protect the plant or organism from damage by light and oxygen. Many animals incorporate carotenoids into their diets, which provide them with antioxidants and a source of vitamin A activity.
By consuming a plant or organism that contains these pigments, you gain a similar protective benefit.
There are more than 600 naturally-occurring carotenoids, but most people are familiar with only a few.
Carotenoids are classified into two groups:
    1. Carotenes, which contain no oxygen atoms: lycopene (the red in tomatoes) and beta-carotene (the orange in carrots) are examples.
    2. Xanthophylls, which contain oxygen atoms: lutein, canthaxanthin (the gold in chanterelle mushrooms), zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin are examples.
Zeaxanthin is the most common carotenoid found in nature (peppers, maize, kiwi, grapes, oranges, and squash).

    Nutrex Hawaii Inc....
      Buy New $22.49

At this moment, about 10 different carotenoids are likely circulating in your blood. None of the carotenes tested to date are able to cross your blood-brain barrier — but astaxanthin does.
All Carotenoids Are Not Created Equal
Some carotenoids (including beta-carotene, lycopene, and zeaxanthin) act not only as antioxidants, but also as pro-oxidants when present in your tissues in sufficient concentrations — which is not a good thing.
Astaxanthin is unique in that it cannot function as a pro-oxidant, making it highly beneficial.
Zeaxanthin is already abundant in your diet, provided you eat enough fresh, raw, vegetables and some fruits. Your best source of lutein is from the yolks of eggs — but make sure they are organic eggs laid by free-range pastured hens.
Astaxanthin is different in that you are probably not consuming much of it, and certainly not enough to take advantage of all its benefits.
Astaxanthin is the most commonly-occurring, red carotenoid in marine and aquatic animals, especially salmon, giving it its characteristic pink color. Salmon and other sea creatures, like other animals, cannot synthesize astaxanthin themselves and must obtain it from their diets, which include zooplankton and krill. These smaller organisms feed on the microalgae, which are the original producers of the pigment.
Laboratory-made astaxanthin is now commonly used worldwide to supplement fish feeds in order to obtain the desired pinkish to orange-red color. However, wild salmon are 400 percent higher in astaxanthin than farmed salmon, and 100 percent of theirs is natural astaxanthin, rather than synthetic.
Astaxanthin’s Long List of Health Benefits Is Growing by the Day
There may be no other single natural substance that performs so many beneficial biochemical functions as this little-known carotenoid. Its scope is truly amazing.
Here are just some of the ways astaxanthin can positively impact your health, according to the latest research:
    • Supporting immune function
    • Improving cardiovascular health by reducing C-Reactive Proteins (CRP), reducing triglycerides, and increasing beneficial HDL
    • GREATLY protecting your eyes from cataracts, macular degeneration, and blindness (which I will discuss at length below)
    • Protecting your brain from dementia and Alzheimer’s
    • Reducing your risk for many types of cancer (including cancers of the breast, colon, bladder, and mouth) by stimulating apoptosis (cancer cell death) and inhibiting lipid peroxidation
    • Improving recovery from spinal cord and other central nervous system injuries
    • Reducing inflammation from all causes, including arthritis and asthma
    • Improving endurance, workout performance, and recovery
    • Helping to stabilize blood sugar, thereby protecting your kidneys
    • Relieving indigestion and reflux
    • Improving fertility by increasing sperm strength and sperm count
    • Actually helping to prevent sunburn, and protecting you from the damaging effects of radiation (i.e., flying in airplanes, x-rays, CT scans, etc.)
    • Reducing oxidative damage to your DNA
    • Reducing symptoms from pancreatitis, multiple sclerosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and neurodegenerative diseases

The radiation is reduced by 99 percent when flying at night so this is not an issue for night flights. However, it does have to be taken for three weeks to build up levels to provide this level of protection.
This impressive list continues to grow as more studies are being published all the time about this incredible nutrient.
    Carotenoids and Your Eyes
When you were a child, odds are you were told, “Eat carrots — they’ll give you good eyesight!”
There is some truth to that old adage, as carrots contain carotenoids — many of which are important for your eyes. Vitamin A, or retinal, is vital to your retina — without it, you would simply go blind. But vitamin A is readily available from your diet.
Of all the carotenoids, only zeaxanthin and lutein are found in your retina, which has the highest concentration of fatty acids of any tissue in your body. This is because your retina is a highly light and oxygen rich environment, and it needs a large force of free radical scavengers to prevent oxidative damage there.
It is theorized that your body concentrates zeaxanthin and lutein in your retina to perform this duty. The concentration of these two pigments in the macula of your retina is what gives it its characteristic yellow color. (The macula is actually called the “macula lutea” which literally means “yellow spot.”)
Zeaxanthin and lutein both cross the blood-brain-retina barriers, as astaxanthin does.
It is interesting that your eye preferentially concentrates zeaxanthin over lutein in the central macular retinal area (called the fovea), where the greatest amount of light impinges — and zeaxanthin is a more effective singlet oxygen scavenger than lutein. Your body seems to naturally “know” this and accumulates it where it’s most needed!
Leading Causes of Blindness: Macular Degeneration and Cataracts
Science is now revealing that astaxanthin may be the ULTIMATE carotenoid for eye health and prevention of blindness.
Blindness is an enormous problem worldwide. These statistics1 might disturb you:
    • Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 50.
    • Sixty million people suffer from ARMD worldwide, and 10 million are blind.
    • Severe, irreversible vision loss affects 30 percent of people over the age of 55.
    • Cataracts are another major cause of blindness, affecting more than 20 million people in the U.S. alone. Cataracts are caused by lipid peroxidation of the epithelial layer of the lens. Although they can have other causes, most are related to aging.
    • Cataracts result in 3 million cataract surgeries every year.
Clinical studies tell us that photic injury from the cumulative effect of repeated “photic insults” and the resulting gradual loss of photoreceptor cells is a major cause of ARMD. Therefore, anything you can do to cut your losses from these photic insults will reduce your risk for developing macular degeneration as you age.
    Protecting Your Retina with Astaxanthin
Vitamin C can help protect you from retinal injury from excessive light energy, and indeed, high levels of vitamin C are found in human retinal tissues. But this common nutrient cannot do the job alone.
Epidemiological studies have shown that diets high in carotenoids (especially lutein and zeaxanthin) are associated with a reduced risk of cataracts and ARMD. It has also been shown experimentally that regular consumption of lutein supplements can increase your macular pigment density, which may potentially reduce your risk for later development of ARMD.

Scientists have studied lutein, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, and astaxanthin for their respective abilities to protect the retina. But none functions to the degree that astaxanthin does,2 in terms of potency as a free radical scavenger and/or permeability across your blood-brain-retina barrier.
In studies, canthaxanthin was actually found to be potentially damaging to the eye as it caused eye inclusions, which can lead to retinopathy. So this carotenoid was ruled out as a supplement.Dr. Mark Tso3 of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University (considered by most professionals to be the most prestigious ophthalmology training center in the world) has clearly demonstrated that astaxanthin is the clear winner when it comes to protecting your eyes. He discovered that astaxanthin easily crosses into the tissues of the eye and exerts its effects safely and with more potency than any of the other carotenoids, without adverse reactions.
Specifically, Tso determined astaxanthin could ameliorate or prevent light induced damage, photoreceptor cell damage, ganglion cell damage, and damage to the neurons of the inner retinal layers.
He concluded that astaxanthin supplementation could be effective in preventing or treating a whole host of eye diseases, including:
    • Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)
    • Diabetic neuropathy
    • Cystoid macular edema
    • Central retinal arterial and venous occlusion
    • Glaucoma
    • Inflammatory eye diseases (i.e., retinitis, iritis, keratitis, scleritis, etc.)
Other researchers (Shimidzu et al, Bagchi, Martin et al,4 and Beutner5) have since confirmed Dr. Tso’s finding that astaxanthin is the most powerful antioxidant ever discovered for eye health, giving your eyes an additional layer of long-term protection.
Prevention of Cancer and Support for Your Immune System
Besides being a huge discovery in the prevention of eye disease, astaxanthin is showing great promise in cancer prevention, at least in animal studies. Because astaxanthin is not commonly found in human serum, information on its epidemiology in human health is lacking.
Several studies have shown the effectiveness of astaxanthin as a cancer preventative in rats and mice:
    • In 2002, Kurihara et al studied the protective effect of astaxanthin against cancer in mice. He found astaxanthin “improved antitumor responses by inhibiting the lipid peroxidation induced by stress.”
    • Tanaka et al (1994) showed that astaxanthin protected mice from urinary bladder cancer.
    • A second study by Tanaka (1995) showed that astaxanthin prevented oral carcinogenesis in rats, and that the inhibitory effect on cancer was more pronounced than that of beta-carotene, which they had previously tested.
    • A third study by the same research group (1995) found a significant decrease in the incidence of colon cancer in animals fed astaxanthin.
As a side note, it is interesting that the principal dietary source of astaxanthin is salmon, which is a central to the diet of Eskimos and other coastal tribes of North America. These groups have demonstrated an unusually low prevalence of cancer, which has traditionally been attributed to the high levels of certain fatty acids in salmon.
But it is certainly worth exploring the possibility that the astaxanthin in their fish diets may have played a cancer-protective role as well.6
Astaxanthin was studied intensively by Harumi Jyonouchi of the University of Minnesota to determine if it has benefit to immune function. They found that astaxanthin enhanced antibody production and T-cell and T-helper-cell activity, and partly restored

diminished humoral immune responses in old mice.
Astaxanthin also reduced inflammatory symptoms in mice that had H. pylori infections.7

Improving Your Endurance and Fat Loss
Astaxanthin may even improve your muscle endurance and enhance your ability to metabolize fat!
Is there anything this nutrient DOESN’T do?
Mice given astaxanthin were found to have accelerated body fat reduction (i.e., “fat burning”) when combined with exercise, as compared to exercise alone in a 2007 study by Aoi et al.9 Aoi reports the carotenoid seems to exert this effect by protecting the function of a lipid transport enzyme on the membrane of mitochondria that “fuels” energy production.
    The end result?
Buff mice. Not that the world needs more physically fit rodents, but what works on mice often works on YOU.
Protection from Sunburn and Other Damaging Radiation
The ability of Haematococcus pluvialis to protect itself from the effects of intense ultraviolet radiation can actually help you avoid sunburn. This is a result of the “singlet oxygen quenching” I discussed earlier.
Current research is showing that, if you take 2 mg of astaxanthin daily for a month, it will be very difficult for you to get sunburned.
The same powerful antioxidant properties that protect the algae from the sun’s rays will protect your skin as well. It takes a few weeks for the pigment to build up in your tissues, so you can’t just swallow a few pills just prior to your sun exposure and expect miracles.
Similarly, if you find yourself needing an x-ray or a CT scan , you can gain some measure of protection from this radiation exposure by taking 2-4 mg astaxanthin for several weeks prior to the scan.
If you are planning to fly on an airplane, you are also exposed to massive amounts of ionizing radiation, especially if you fly during the day. In this case, it would be wise to take a similar a dose of astaxanthin for the few weeks preceding your trip.
    Final Suggestions
You may recognize the name astaxanthin because I have mentioned it in reference to krill oil, which has been my favorite source of animal-based omega-3 fatty acids for many years now. One of the reasons for that is krill oil naturally contains astaxanthin. And our krill oil has the highest concentration of astaxanthin of any krill oil supplement on the market today.
Because of the profound benefits this powerful antioxidant offers, I am excited to announce that we are in the process of developing several astaxanthin products that will be available in the near future.
If you are going to give astaxanthin a try, I recommend starting with 2 mg per day. If you are on a krill oil supplement, take that into consideration; different krill products have different concentrations of astaxanthin, so check your label.
Eating a variety of fresh organic foods — and incorporating super nutrients like astaxanthin — is the best approach to health, along with good sleep, exercise, and earthing. You may want to consider incorporating more raw foods into your diet, and listening to this

When most Americans have an infection, they go to their doctor for an antibiotic. In most situations, this antibiotic will do the trick—whether it’s an ear infection or a skin infection, but in some cases, these infections are harder to kill. The truth is, they’ve evolved, mounting a resistance to our modern drugs. The growing number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria should alarm us all and should highlight 2 dangerous practices that are only furthering their strength.
Recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report entitled “Antibiotic resistance threats in the United States, 2013.” In it, the agency warned we could be headed toward a day when modern antibiotics are useless, unable to “cure” the simplest illnesses. And even this traditionally pro-Big Pharma agency suggested the 2 main culprits:
    1. Antibiotic overuse
    2. Factory farming where large scale antibiotic use is the norm
The human body is a complex creation which, when cared for properly, can fight off most illnesses with a bit of rest and proper self-care. But as a whole we’ve become too dependent on antibiotics. With the slightest earache children are taken to their pediatrician for a bottle of pink pharmaceuticals. A sore throat that could be viral is quickly treated with an antibiotic “just in case”. This overuse of antibiotics has triggered the bacteria-causing-infections to simply get stronger in the interest of self-preservation.

This is just the first reason the CDC is finally admitting that the age of antibiotics may soon be over as super-bacteria continue to take over.
The second most important contributor revolves around antibiotics fed to livestock. In livestock, feedlots have become mass consumers of antibiotics, where animals are given preventative drugs to keep infections at bay. Again, the infections have simply gotten smarter. Activists have been fighting this issue for years.
Antibiotic resistant infections are growing, not only in prevalence but in scope. For the first time, the number of MRSA infections in the public have outnumbered the number of hospital cases.
While the CDC recommends developing new drugs to fight the evolved bacteria, we suggest using a method that works—creating healthy bodies and immune systems that can fight illness without drug intervention. And when infections occur, bolstering those immune systems with healing foods that have antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
Naturally occurring compounds and foods like manuka honey, turmeric, and lavender have all shown promising effects on antibiotic-resistant infections like MRSA. Do your part: the next time you feel a bug coming on, don’t rush out to your doctor – seek natural solutions instead.
