Is there a paternal age effect for aneuploidy?

Abstract

Finding a positive association between paternal age and the incidence of aneuploidy is not difficult. A cursory analysis however reveals that any association is indirect, brought about by a close correlation between paternal age and maternal age. Approaches for dissecting out the confounding age effects of the mother has led to a lively exchange among epidemiologists, with perhaps a consensus for the absence of a paternal age effect, at least for trisomy 21. Molecular studies revealed the relatively minor contribution of paternal errors to trisomy, but even research on the paternally derived trisomies alone has been inconclusive; thus studies focussed directly on the sperm heads. Human-hamster fusion assays were superseded by FISH for establishing any possible link between age and the proportion of disomic sperm in an ejaculate. Despite innumerable microscope hours however, although convincing studies suggesting an age effect for disomies 1, 9, 18 and 21 and the sex chromosomes are in the literature, others failed to notice any association for these or other chromosomes. It is biologically plausible that chromosomal non-disjunction errors should increase with age. Male reproductive hormone production, testicular morphology and semen parameters all decline slowly with age and paternal age is implicated in congenital birth defects, such as achondroplasia and Apert syndromes and also linked to compromised DNA repair mechanisms. Despite several decades of epidemiological and molecular cytogenetic studies, however, we are still not close to a definitive answer of whether or not there is a paternal age effect for aneuploidy. In this review we conclude by questioning the efficacy of FISH because of difficulties in detecting nullisomy and because of evidence that the centromeres (from which most sperm-FISH probes are derived) cluster at the nuclear centre. Array-based approaches may well supersede FISH in addressing the question of a paternal age effect; for now, however, the jury is still out.

A safe and effective cure for cancer has been discovered with a drug that was once used for unusual metabolic problems. Yet, the cancer industry shows no interest with following up on dichloroacetate (DCA) research from University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, reported in 2007. That’s because DCA is no longer patented. (1)
That research also confirmed cancer as a metabolic malfunction, not a weird mutation of cells often explained away as a genetic issue. But the medical mafia doesn’t want you to hear about it. But it confirms what most alternative cancer therapists already know.
Since Nixon declared the “war on cancer” in the 1970s, the cancer industry has succeeded with raising money for researching very expensive chemo substances at $50,000 to $100,000 per round or more for toxic therapies that rarely work. (2)
Chemo drugs usually lead to demanding more business with drugs to ease terrible side effects (http://www.naturalnews.com/034761_cancer_drugs_toxicity_Voraxaze.html). Meanwhile, more are getting cancer and more are dying from it, mostly because of the toxic treatments.
Explaining DCA research results
Evangelos Michelakis and the Alberta University research team tested DCA on human cancer cells outside the body and in cancerous mice with profound success. DCA was once used for unusual metabolic disorders. The worst side effects, which rarely occur, include some numbness and an affected gait.
The mice were fed DCA in water, and in weeks they had remarkable tumor shrinkage. This indicates DCA can be taken orally. DCA works by restoring the cells’ mitochondria. Michelakis and his team had discovered that the mitochondria in cancer cells are not permanently damaged and irreparable. This is what mainstream medicine thinks.
With mitochondria malfunctioning, cancer cells use glucose fermentation for survival energy. This fermentation occurs when glycolysis (glucose conversion) occurs in an anaerobic cellular environment, which can be created by benign tumor masses, toxins, and low pH levels.
  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
DCA restores mitochondria in cells to make them function properly. Another function of normal mitochondria is signaling apoptosis, or cellular self destruction. Normal cells die and become replaced constantly. But with cancer cells, the apoptosis signal is nullified, making cancer cells “immortal.” (3)
The Alberta University researchers also realized that glycolysis fermentation in cancer cells produces lactic acid. The lactic acid breaks down the collagen holding those cells together in a tumor. This allows cancer cells to easily break away from a tumor shrinking with mainstream therapies.
The researchers reasoned this is why cancer metastasizes or spreads to different parts of the body or reappears after remission from chemo.
Tragic hypocrisy
Alternative cancer therapies have little or no problem with metastatic cancer or even cancer reoccurring after remission. Most alternative cancers simply cure cancers completely.
DCA offers the cancer industry an opportunity to come up with a pharmaceutical cure that is much cheaper and safer than their current standard of care. Yet the cancer industry is ignoring this opportunity. Instead, DCA is a homeless orphan begging for research funds to avoid legal issues with off label use on cancer. (4)
Alternative cancer practitioners have always simply tried out and when they succeeded shared them with others who cared more about healing than money and power.
The medical mafia has created a matrix that demands big bucks to make big bucks for sick care instead of curing. Everyone in on the scam makes out financially. The cancer industry accuses alternative cancer therapists of quackery and taking advantage of the desperately ill for financial gain. Accusing others of your motives and crimes is called projection.
The medical/pharmaceutical complex is crony capitalism that doesn’t want a cure for cancer from anywhere.

***UPDATED – Newt Gingrich suggested ObamaCare individual mandate in May 2009

***UPDATE: Legal Insurrection DISAGREES***
Verum Serum dug this up yesterday. I don’t think it’s a big surprise given that we know Gingrich had vocally supported the mandate as recent as 2011.
And at this point in the game, there’s been so much blodletting that I’m honestly not interested in rehashing ‘old’ wounds. I’ve made my peace with it and unless something substantially new gets uncovered and I’m ready to get on with the election and defeat Romney, then Obama.
But you can make of it what you will. Here is the audio:

***
Also, it’s worth noting that Michelle Malkin has a superb piece this morning that you should read. She goes through all the candidates and in the end says:
And at this point in the game, Rick Santorum represents the most conservative candidate still standing who can articulate both fiscal and social conservative values — and live them.
***
UPDATE: Our friends at Legal Insurrection disagrees with the conclusion made by Verum Serum. Here’s the most important part of his writeup:
The actual discussion in the recording is nothing new, listen for yourself, it shows Newt saying what he has said before about not allowing free riders at hospitals including either having insurance or showing that you have the ability to pay. You can like it or not, but it’s not new or news, as Verum Serum acknowledges in its post.
The recording does not support the conclusion that Newt supported Obama’s federal mandate, which uses the police powers of the state to force people to buy insurance or face penalties.
At the time of Newt’s presentation, in May 2009, the earliest versions of Obamacare had not yet been released. Newt specifically notes that the details of what would be proposed were unknown and (at 27:00) the process was still in the “wish list press conference stage.”
The initial version of Obamacare was not released until early June 2009. My first blog post about the early draft (the Senate HELP Committee version) of Obamacare was on June 16 regarding the CBO assessment. Various iterations of Obamacare were proposed throughout June -August. The Obamacare legislation and mandate eventually focused on using the IRS as the enforcer.
The Verum Serum recording was before there was a specific proposal, much less a specific Obamacare mandate which turned into enforcement through tax returns and penalties.
It is not true, at least not based on the May 2009 recording posted at Verum Serum, that Newt supported the Obamacare mandate.

When the earth refuses to warm

When the earth refuses to warm

By Wesley Pruden
Global warming: Been there, done that. Forward-looking folks are adjusting their fretting machinery now to something called Cycle 25. Button up your overcoats. Ice is on the way.

Global warming, which was mostly a scam invented by researchers looking for government grants, is over. The great warming phenomenon, which was supposed to have sent polar bears to vacation in Miami Beach by now, ended in 1997.

Britain’s Met Office, which tracks weather and makes forecasts, and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit, the source of much global warming research (some of it faked, some of it not), agree, according to the London Daily Mail, that Planet Earth could even be heading for an icy patch “to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th century.” They call this Cycle 25.

Global warming was pushed by high priests of the god Science, not scientists in pursuit of secular knowledge.

The report of the findings in Old Blighty follows an op-ed essay in the Wall Street Journal, signed by 16 eminent scientists, including both physicists and other climate researchers, that the panic promoted over global warming is not now, and never has been, shared by “large numbers of scientists, many very prominent.”

The number of these “heretics” is growing, and “the reason is a collection of stubborn scientific facts.” The chief among these “stubborn scientific facts” is that the global warming scare was bunk from the beginning, promoted by high priests of the great god Science, not actual scientists in pursuit of secular knowledge. (Think Al Gore.)

“Why is there so much passion about global warming,” these 16 eminent scientists asked, “and why has the issue become so vexing that the American Physical Society . . . refused the seemingly reasonable request by so many of its members to remove the word ‘incontrovertible’ from its description of a scientific issue? There are several reasons, but a good place to start is the old question of ‘cui bono?’ Or the modern update, ‘follow the money.’”

The rising temperatures which led some researchers to panic, like frightened teenage girls fretting over prom dates, actually began to subside when sunspot activity began to subside. According to this new research, sunspot numbers are less than half of those recorded during the cycle peaks when scientific hysteria was at its wildest at the end of the 20th century. The sun is moving now toward a “grand minimum” of sunspot activity, which would threaten cooler summers, colder winters and shorter growing seasons. It’s all part of the natural cycle of something the rest of us call “nature.”

Sunspots appear to be the villains. Since the sun is beyond the control of scientists, this makes their hair hurt and teeth itch. Scientists at the Met Office, which concedes that global warming has subsided, nevertheless argue still that the impact of the sun on climate is far less than man-made carbon dioxide (or cow-made, since bovine flatulence has been cited as contributing to climate change). “Our findings,” says the Met Office, “suggest [that] a reduction of solar activity to levels not seen in hundreds of years would be insufficient to offset the dominant influence of greenhouse gases.”

This frustrates cooler heads in the Church of Science. Says Henrik Svensmark, director of Denmark’s sun-climate research: “It will take a long battle to convince some climate scientists that the sun is important. It may well be that the sun is going to demonstrate this on its own, without the need for their help.

The Met Office, like most of the global warmist strongholds, relies on computer models for emanations of the penumbras of doom. These models did not foresee the pause in global warming, but the Met insists the models are still valid. Judith Curry of Georgia Tech, regarded as one of the most eminent American climate scholars, finds the prediction of a “negligible” impact of sunspot activity on climate difficult to understand.

“The responsible thing to do would be to accept the fact that the models may have severe shortcomings when it comes to the influence of the sun,” she told the Mail. She thinks it more likely that the rising and falling of the temperature of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have more influence on climate than man-made carbon dioxide.

“If we don’t see convincing evidence of global warming by 2015,” says Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, “it will start to become clear that the models are bunk.” Heavy-breathing humans and flatulent cows will be off the hook, and a lot of scam artists will be pushed away from the public trough and on the street looking for work.

Vitamin D deficiency in SIDS

Vitamin D deficiency in SIDS

Posted on January 27, 2012 by Dr John Cannell

The BBC reports just recently that two pathologists in England have seen the light. Not only have they identified two babies who died of (vitamin D deficiency induced) heart failure, and one from (vitamin D deficiency induced) hypocalcemic seizures, they found vitamin D deficiency in eight babies who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), five infants who died from asthma and five who died from lung infection. In a group of 45 infants who died from “natural causes,” 75% were vitamin D deficient, making these pathologists think that these infants are not dying from natural causes but from a resurgence of a childhood plague from the Industrial Revolution.

As important as their first realization is, don’t forget their second realization: authorities are unjustly snatching helpless infants away from their parents (and often putting the parents in jail) for fractures caused by vitamin D deficiency. As they say, vitamin D deficiency can make bones “brittle and capable of fracture with little or no real force.”

Vitamin D and fertility in men and women

Vitamin D and fertility in men and women
January 30, 2012 -- Dr John Cannell

Every year, billions are spent in fertility clinics; the result of which is often in vitro fertilization (IVF). About 5 years ago, I began receiving emails from a nurse practitioner in Indiana who works in a fertility clinic. Her experience was dramatic; 5,000 IU/day for both the man and woman frequently resulted in a healthy baby. However, her last email to me was quite sad, she was in danger of losing her job as her boss, a gynecologist, was losing money due to vitamin D. He ordered her to stop advocating it or lose her job.

Today, the Daily Mail and several other newspapers reviewed a lengthy article in The European Journal of Endocrinology that concluded, “Given the high prevalence of infertility as well as vitamin D insufficiency in otherwise healthy young women and men and the possible role of vitamin D in human reproduction, research might lead to new therapeutic approaches such as vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of female and male reproductive disorders.”

Critical to this carefully caged advice is the fact that men need help as frequently as the women do. “Population-based studies found that in 30-40% of infertile couples the underlying cause is the male factor. In this context it should be mentioned that the overall semen quality of men is decreasing, which might partly be explained by environmental factors. Indeed, as much as 20% of young men have sperm concentration below the WHO recommendation level and 40% present with sperm concentrations below a level that is considered optimal for fertility.” Pretty amazing, especially when you realize these men have normal testosterone levels but that vitamin D levels are steadily decreasing.

Elisabeth Lerchbaum and Barbara Obermayer-Pietsch Vitamin D and fertility-a systematic review. European Journal of Endocrinology January 30, 2012

The authors go onto say, “In northern countries, where a strong seasonal contrast in luminosity (sunshine intensity) exists, the conception rate is decreased during the dark winter months, whereas a peak in conception rate during summer leading to a maximum in birth rate in spring has been observed. Moreover, ovulation rates and endometrial receptivity seem to be reduced during long dark winters in northern countries.”

While no direct studies exist of vitamin D levels and fertility per se, the authors report, “In a study among 84 infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilization, women with higher levels of 25(OH)D in serum and follicular fluid were significantly more likely to achieve clinical pregnancy following in vitro fertilization . . .”

If you don’t want to work your way through the entire 42 page paper, read the excellent synopsis in the Daily Mail below.

Carey T. Sunny break may be alternative to in vitro fertilization: How the sunshine vitamin can help boost fertility. Daily Mail Online, January 30, 2012.

The takeaway message is the same as always, a message so common I should just start saying “ditto.” If you want to get pregnant, make sure you and your partner take 5,000 IU/day. If you don’t want to get pregnant, make sure you and your partner are on 5,000 IU/day plus a reliable method of birth control. I take no responsibility for surprise pregnancies.

Children's medicines coated with brain-damaging aluminum

Children's medicines coated with brain-damaging aluminum

(NaturalNews) Aluminum Lake food coloring, used to heavily coat liquid medicines for children, contains dangerous amounts of aluminum and harmful synthetic petrochemicals. These "petrochemicals" are carcinogens containing petroleum, antifreeze and ammonia, which cause a long list of adverse reactions. Aluminum poisoning can lead to short and long term central nervous system (CNS) damage, such as memory impairments, autism, epilepsy, mental retardation, and dementia.

Research shows that just 4ppm of aluminum can cause the blood to coagulate. This is what causes Alzheimer's Disease and has been documented to inhibit learning. Aluminum consumption can also be associated with the development of bone disorders, including stress fractures.

Also known as tartrazine, FD&C Yellow Aluminum Lake is a chemical concoction derived from coal tar. It is known to be a reproductive toxin. All artificial colors contain Aluminum Lake, so when your child gets to pick between red, blue or green medicine, they're really choosing which poison they get to consume. Several chemically enhanced food colorings contain ammonia and therefore produce compounds proven to cause various cancers in animal studies, according to CSPI, the Center for Science in the Public Interest. (http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm)

Most widely used food colors and their damaging actions:

• Blue #1: Research shows it causes kidney tumors in mice.

• Blue #2: Research shows even higher incidence of tumors, specifically gliomas in male rates (a type of tumor that starts in the brain or spine).

• Red #2: Toxic to rodents, even at modest levels, and causes tumors of the bladder.

• Red #3: FDA recognized it in 1990 as a cause of thyroid cancer in animals. It was banned in cosmetics, but still allowed in food and medicine.

• Red #40: Most popular dye of all. Debilitates the immune-system in mice. Allergic reactions common.

• Green #3: Causes bladder and testes tumors.

• Yellow #5: Affects behavior and induces severe hypersensitivity reactions.

• Yellow #6: Causes adrenal tumors in animals.

The following is taken directly from FDA's Regulatory Process and Historical Perspectives: "Color additives are important components of many products, making them attractive, appealing, appetizing, and informative. Added color serves as a kind of code that allows us to identify products on sight, like candy flavors and medicine dosages." Really?! Decoding medicine dosages on sight?

There has been a 55% increase in U.S. toxic food dyes just since the year 2000. There are over 15 million pounds of dyes put in foods, drinks, candy and medicine every year, and the FDA does nothing to protect consumers from the colorful barrage of poison. (http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/food/artificial-food-colors.htm)

Studies reveal that children have consumed as much as three pounds of dye by the age of twelve
Here are some popular product and "brand" names you may mistake as exempt products: RD&C dyes and colors in baked goods, beverages, candy, cereal, drugs, pet food, personal care products, cosmetics, cough syrups, NyQuil,Tylenol, Robitussin,Jello, gelatins, Cheetos, Skittles, Fruity Pebbles, Marachino cherries, sausage, Mountain Dew, Doritos, chewing gum, and powdered drink mixes.

American companies doing business in Europe currently have to change their products to natural colorings to meet European Union strict regulations. The FDA's rationale is that because artificial food colorings are used mainly in foods and medicines of low or no nutritional value, that the American public should "already be aware" of health implications, so it doesn't matter if other toxins are added.

What are your options as opposed to poisonous medicines? Consult a naturopath (ND) for advice on ingredients in food and medicine.

Abortion stillbirth events from Gardasil far exceed all other vaccines

Originally published February 12 2011
Abortion stillbirth events from Gardasil far exceed all other vaccines
by Rosemary Mathis, Director of SANE VAX, INC.

(NaturalNews) According to a National Vaccine Information Center (http://nvic.org) MedAlerts blog entry written in November 2010, the incidents of abortion and stillbirth events from the HPV4 vaccine Gardasil supersedes the same event from all other vaccinations.

The research and post was written by Steven M. Rubin, Ph.D., a computer scientist who maintains the online searchable VAERS database, MedAlerts. He has managed this database voluntarily and independent of his official work since 2003 and has worked with the NVIC since 2005.

In his blog entry on MedAlerts, Dr. Rubin states that "It has been suggested that the H1N1 Flu vaccine causes miscarriages. This month, I want to see if the claim is supported by VAERS data."

Dr. Rubin explains how it is determined whether a VAERS event resulted in a miscarriage.

"VAERS uses the MedDRA symptom classification, which organizes all known symptoms at five levels of detail. At the second level of detail is an entry 'Abortions and stillbirth' which has under it 'Abortion related conditions and complications', 'Abortions spontaneous', 'Stillbirth and foetal death' and 'Abortions not specified as induced or spontaneous'. Each of these is further refined into specific symptoms. So it seems that this second-level term (or as it is known in MedDRA, the High-Level Group Term or HLGT) is a valid way to identify miscarriages."

He surmised the data would "surely favor vaccines that have been given for 21 years over those that have been recently introduced, because such vaccines will have been given much more, and so will have produced many more symptoms."

In other words, this graph should de-emphasize the H1N1 Flu vaccine, which has existed for just one year. We should see relatively few H1N1-related miscarriage events compared with the "seasonal" flu vaccine, which has been administered to many more patients.

However, the VAERS data proved him wrong. Dr. Rubin acknowledges the "results are shocking. First of all, the H1N1 Flu vaccine has appeared in miscarriage events more often than almost any other vaccine."

He goes on to state, "But the graph has more shocking results for us. The H1N1 Flu vaccine appears in many of the abortion/stillbirth cases, but not the most. The 'winner', appearing in 297 of the VAERS records associated with miscarriage, is Gardasil (vaccine code HPV4)! Once again, this vaccine is a newcomer, having only existed for four years."

His advice to pregnant women is to "read the product manufacturers insert for the vaccine they are considering and speak with one or more trusted health care professionals before making a decision about vaccination during pregnancy."

A recently released study, New Adjuvanted Vaccines in Pregnancy: What is Known About Their Safety? had this to say:

"Owing to the fact that pregnant women are usually excluded from the majority of clinical trials on vaccines, little is known about the side effects of adjuvants during pregnancy. There are only a few published studies on the safety of adjuvanted vaccines during pregnancy. These studies, however, concentrated on the extreme effects of adjuvanted vaccines on pregnancy (i.e., teratogenic effects). No attention has been paid to more subtle effects, such as effects on placental development or fetal weight or the effects of the vaccine or its adjuvant on the maternal immune system. During normal pregnancy, the maternal immune system adapts to accommodate the semiallogeneic fetus and interference with this immune system may interfere with normal pregnancy."

SANEVax (http://sanevax.org/) is outraged that a vaccine that is a "relative newcomer" has the highest incident of induced abortions and stillbirth rates among any other vaccine on the market. There is no doubt the vaccines safety and efficacy has not been thoroughly investigated, and independent investigation on the safety and efficacy of the HPV vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix must be conducted before there are more injuries and deaths.

There is currently no vaccine specifically approved by the FDA for use during pregnancy in the United States. Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware!

It is obvious that the pharmaceutical marketing campaign promises of "One Less Girl" at risk for cervical cancer and "armed for life" have turned into a global travesty as each day ONE MORE GIRL suffers an adverse reaction and/or death - or the death of her baby after taking Gardasil or Cervarix.

Please support the ONE MORE GIRL Documentary: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1995527181/one-more-girl-documentary - so the truth about the damage done to innocent girls can be told to prevent this global travesty from ever occurring again.

The genius of democracy is dispersed public control.

As we saw in Iowa when alert public citizens captured evidence of the actual vote count BEFORE it was reported by a centralized state committee, the state Republican Party and the news media initially claimed victory for the wrong winner. They only corrected this mis-call two weeks later, buying the favored candidate half a month of fund raising prowess and prestige.

In South Carolina, 100% of election results will be redirected through a private Barcelona, Spain-owned company, Scytl/SOE Software, before being reported to the public.

There is only one way to immediately find out whether Scytl/SOE reported the right results*, and that is for members of the public to capture evidence of reported precinct results when polls close tonight. Think of it as a giant neighborhood watch.

Precinct results should be posted at each polling site. In addition, during poll closing the public has a right to be in the polling place watching and videotaping what goes on.

Here is a four-minute video showing exactly what to do:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3_xFb1sWKU

By the way, the results will be published here:

Compare photos of what you capture at polling places to the results reported at the above link.

For computer buffs, there's another thing you can do. (The above steps are easy and can be done by anyone.) But for tech buffs, you can download multiple times during the evening, and there are even Web snapshot tools to expedite this. It is not uncommon to see results change or disappear midstream.

In Broward County FL, the results reported by Scytl-owned SOE Software in 2008 showed an entire candidate, who was winning, disappear into vapor in the middle of the count, and in Hillsborough County FL and Dallas County TX, votes that had been reported began to disappear.

The way to see this is to download "time slices" -- snapshots at various points in time, and compare them. More information for those of you who like technical stuff is available in the Black Box Voting Tool Kit - http://www.blackboxvoting.org/toolkit.pdf

Follow Black Box Voting for further developments.

* Well, you have to put an asterisk alongside "the right results" because in South Carolinia you get a two-fer. Results could be incorrect at either end of the pipeline -- from the ES&S iVotronic paperless touchscreen voting machines, which have a history of incorrect totals, or from the private results reporting firm Scytl/SOE Software, which has centralized control over what gets reported. (USA) 1/12 - THE TRAGIC TALE OF EDWARD TRUE AND JAMES FALSE - Permission to excerpt granted, with link to http://www.blackboxvoting.org
By Bev Harris

The actual Iowa winner may "never be known", and one of the "dead" voters in New Hampshire has now shown up -- alive.

It matters, and it's called journalistic malpractice. TV networks announced that Romney won Iowa, and newspapers pronounced his 1-2 "wins" as "historic." Candidates dropped out, donors dried up or rushed to send cash to the reported "winner".

Now we are being told that the Iowa results "don't matter." They matter, regardless of any rent-an-expert who shows up in the press. Misreported results manipulated the candidate field from which the rest of America can choose.

The Des Moines Register is now reporting an even greater malfeasance: that the final, certified Iowa result may "never be known." There were several typos, they say. Some precincts will never be reported, they claim.

That we got a heads up at all about bogus media results was due to an alert Iowa citizen, Edward True, who captured evidence of the 20-vote misreport in his Appanoose County precinct. That people like Edward True were stationed all over Iowa capturing results before they hit the state Republican Committee tabulation was due to Black Box Voting, where the need to do this was explained, and to radio hosts and sites like Bradblog and Facebook, where the word went out.

Mainstream media then began its next act of theatre: They started spinning the false result that THEY THEMSELVES announced as -- instead of their own foolishness -- "making Iowa look foolish".

But if we're looking for truth, here's what we will find: The mistakes saw light of day because the Iowa caucus was conducted in open public meeting allowing citizens to watch ballots as they were hand counted.

At least it WAS an open system, until the Republican State Committee pitched the bizarre idea that some precincts might never be reported in the final certified result, and the media failed to bay like bloodhounds tracking the truth.

But there is some good news in this: It's great that public citizens are starting to understand their role in the "neighborhood watch" component of election integrity.

AND NOW FOR JAMES FALSE, OF THE ANTONYM ORGANIZATION "PROJECT VERITAS"

In New Hampshire, media hammertime revolved around James O'Keefe and his "Project Veritas", who reported that dead people were allowed to vote, "proving" it by sending people around the state to impersonate the dead. He's basically getting fat grants from fat cats who don't want so many (real, live) people to vote. He admits to receiving $50,000 for the New Hampshire piece. They are busy manufacturing evidence to manipulate public opinion in favor of voter ID legislation.

Problem is, another alert citizen -- who they were reporting as dead -- called them on their malfeasance. Robert William Beaulieu is on the video as a successfully impersonated dead voter. Embarrasingly for Project Veritas, Robert William Beaulieu is very much alive.

It seems that Project Falsum Project Veritas did not even bother to check birthdates to match names to dead persons. They mistook a 23-year old for an 80-year old.

Now, we recently saw an article coming out of South Carolina alleging that 900 dead persons voted, and that should immediately call into question how the match was made. By name only? Name and birthdate? Or Social Security number?

Matching by name only doesn't pass the sniff test, and it turns out that matching by name and birthdate is trickier than you might think. I found 130 people named Mary Williams in a Shelby County (TN) database. Two had the same birthdate. In fact, any time you have a common name, with 100 or more instances, you will find the same birthdate as often as 1 in 3 sets. In a statewide database like South Carolina, it would not be surprising to see 900 name/birthdate matches.

The only way to do a match is with Social Security number, and this is not available to public interest groups.

Why salmon protects your brain

On Wednesday, I showed you how cinnamon can help prevent and treat Alzheimer's. I also showed you several other nutrients that have brain-protecting properties. But there's one relatively unknown nutrient that I didn't mention. And according to a new study, this super nutrient can have a dramatic impact on the health of your brain.

The researchers conducted this fantastic study on humans! They noted that people getting dementia had higher levels of rancid fatty acids in their blood cell phospholipids. They set to lower that damage with the nutrient astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin is the carotenoid that provides the red color in salmon, shellfish, and microalgae. Like curcumin provides the yellow pigment in curry, astaxanthin provides a redish pigment. And it's highly nutritious.

German Scientific Breakthrough Gives You Double the Nutrient
of Ordinary Chlorella

Only about 40% of the nutrients in chlorella are absorbed by your body. That's because the thick cell wall makes it very hard for your body to digest.

Now German scientists have found a way to open the cell wall and double the nutrients your body can absorb!

Learn more

In this study, the researchers designed a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (considered the best study). They had 30 middle-aged and senior participants. They divided them into three groups and gave them either a placebo or astaxanthin (6 mg or 12 mg) daily.

After 12 weeks, the treatment groups had higher astaxanthin levels than the placebo subjects. The real good news is that the higher levels of the nutrient appeared to lower oxidative damage of the red cell membranes' phospholipids. They concluded that this might help reduce the incidence of dementia.

In the February issue of Second Opinion, I show you why fish oil doesn't protect your brain. Here we see that there's more to salmon that's healthy than just the oil. I've always considered the whole food better than the separate parts. And this study shows why.

However, this is another case where I don't recommend eating enough salmon to get the right amount of this super nutrient. You would have to eat five ounces of wild salmon daily to get the right dose of astaxanthin.

So if you've ever had a test showing undesirable lipid peroxidation or if you show signs of dementia, you might want to add an astaxanthin supplement (6-12 mg) to your daily routine.

When I tell people they can cure diabetes without drugs or the help of a doctor, they usually roll their eyes and think I'm making it up.

Volume 5, Issue 4 January 26, 2012

New study proves you
can cure diabetes

When I tell people they can cure diabetes without drugs or the help of a doctor, they usually roll their eyes and think I'm making it up. But I'm not. I've seen it happen all too many times. Now a new study finally is verifying what I have been saying.

In this new study, the researchers examined the effect of a new drug that consists of a combination of two drugs. This new medication is a controlled-release combination of phentermine, an appetite suppressant, and topiramate, an anticonvulsant. The net effect of the drugs is to reduce appetite so people eat less.

Learn more

The researchers looked at the effect of two different doses of the drug combination on a group of 146 adults with type-2 diabetes. In addition to having diabetes, all of these people also had a mean body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2. This means that all of them were significantly obese. The average length of time in which they had diabetes was four years. In other words, these were not recently diagnosed cases. They were all using the standard dietary and exercise advice. And about half of them were on the diabetes medication metformin.
The researchers divided the participants into three groups. For one year, some of them took a placebo pill, some took a half dose of the drug combo, and some took a full dose. At the end of the year, the patients taking the placebo had an average weight loss of 2.8%. Those on the low-dose drug had a weight loss of 6.6%. And those on the high dose had a 12.1% loss.

But they didn't just lose weight. They also saw amazing results with their diabetes.

The researchers defined a cure of diabetes as the absence of any signs, symptoms, or laboratory evidence of diabetes. The placebo cured a remarkable 1.7% of the patients. This alone shows you the power of simply altering diet and establishing an exercise routine. Here's what is really remarkable about this result. I know that the diet and exercise programs most doctors prescribe for type-2 diabetics fall way short of what is actually optimal. So even with a sub-optimal natural program, 1.7% of these patients experienced a complete cure.

This gets better. The patients on the drug combo saw even more cases cured. Those on the half dose had an 8.3% cure rate. And those on the full dose saw a whopping 15.4% cure rate. There are several good take home messages from this very interesting and well done study.

First, notice the striking correlation between the amount of weight loss and the amount of cures in each group. There is almost a 1:1 ratio. The greater the amount of weight loss, the greater the number of cures. This is a striking demonstration of the incredibly important relationship between weight and diabetes.

Next, notice that the amount of weight lost did not have to be drastic. The group with the 15.4% cure rate lost only 12.5% of their weight. For most of these patients, that would amount to about 25-35 pounds. That is not that much considering the overall obesity of the group.

Third, in this study, the researchers examined only one parameter of diabetes — weight. While excess body fat obviously plays a strong role in diabetes, there are many other issues including liver function, hormone levels, and herbal and nutritional factors that are also very important. I describe all of these in my book. If you were to address all of these issues at the same time you lost the weight, I'm sure that the results would have been much better.

Lastly, before you go out and ask your doctor for the drug combination, consider that nasty little issue of side effects. The drug users commonly experienced constipation, insomnia, dry mouth, and headache. And they also had two signs of neurological injury: an impairment of their ability to taste (dysgeusia) and numbness and tingling in their hands and feet (called paresthesias).

When the drug manufactures applied to the FDA for a new drug application, the FDA rejected it. The agency felt that the danger of birth defects, elevated heart rate, metabolic acidosis, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, along with attention, memory, language, and other cognitive disorders was unacceptably high. This is one time that I have to congratulate the FDA.

This study confirms what I've said all along — you can cure type-2 diabetes. Fortunately, you don't have to subject yourself to all the dangers and side effects of these drugs to do it. There are many safe and natural ways to do the same thing. If you or any of your loved ones has type-2 diabetes, please get a copy of my book, The Type-2 Diabetes Breakthrough. The natural methods I tell you about in this book can cure diabetes. I've seen many of my patients use it to do just that. And you can do it too. You can order the book by calling 800-791-3392.

Can Healthy Gums Help You Live Longer?

Can Healthy Gums Help You Live Longer?

It’s no secret that healthy gums are essential to fresh breath and a brilliant smile. But what about clear arteries, a strong heart, a sharp brain, and balanced blood sugar? Believe it or not, all of these longevity markers can be traced right back to your mouth… and trouble in periodontal paradise could actually be a smoking gun for several other health concerns.

That’s because imbalanced inflammatory responses in your gums directly activate inflammatory signaling molecules like NF-kappaB, which can have wide-ranging effects on brain health, liver health, kidney health, and especially heart health.1-2 Studies have shown that the administration of oral bacteria to animals affects gene expression in the aorta, while altering lipid development and initiating changes in the blood vessel lining—all of which amounts to a notable negative impact on circulatory health and cholesterol profiles.3

Research also demonstrates that oral bacteria can interfere with platelet function and artery flexibility, with a number of human studies confirming this negative link.4-6 Case control studies have revealed a 30 percent increase in heart health concerns among subjects with poor dental health—with reports indicating that the connection between gum health and heart health remains strong, even after adjustments for other key cardiovascular factors, such as cholesterol, blood pressure, and BMI.7-9

It appears that these ties carry over to cognitive performance as well: experiments on mammalian neurons show that exposure to common oral bacteria can reduce the neurons' function, while triggering an imbalanced inflammatory response that leads to abnormal protein deposits in the brain.10 And these inflammatory imbalances are only made worse by poor glycemic control, as receptors formed from imbalanced blood sugar metabolism contribute to further periodontal aggravation.11

Ultimately, your longevity hinges on a healthy mouth—so if brushing and flossing just don’t seem to be doing the trick, it’s time to look beyond your bathroom sink for some help.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) lozenges are a good place to start. HA is a high molecular weight polysacharride that has been shown to balance inflammatory responses and support periodontal health.12 Trials indicate that application of HA to unhealthy gums results in significant improvements in gum health.13

Periodontal application of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may also be helpful, with small trials showing that it can promote optimal gum health within several weeks of topical use.14 This may be attributable to the fact that subjects with poor oral health also tend toward significantly lower CoQ10 levels—not to mention CoQ10’s ability to enhance salivary excretion when routinely taken in either one of its popular forms (ubiquinol or ubiquinone).15-16

Finally, the safe, natural sweetener xylitol also delivers clinically-supported benefits to your gums by increasing saliva flow and fighting oral bacteria.17-20

Fallout from Fukushima No. 1 on rise 25 Jan 2012 The amount of radioactive materials released from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant has risen this month compared with December, Tepco said. The amount so far has come to 70 million becquerels per hour, compared with 60 million becquerels in December, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday, adding that the increase is attributable to the displacement of radioactive materials that had settled on facilities and equipment as a result of work conducted near reactors 2 and 3.

New study: Vitamin D levels of the Maasai and Hadzabe of Africa

New study: Vitamin D levels of the Maasai and Hadzabe of Africa
January 25, 2012 -- Dr John Cannell
The most frequent question we get at the Vitamin D Council is, “What vitamin D blood level should I have?” For the last seven years, we have recommended 25(OH)-vitamin D levels of around 50 ng/ml (125 nmol/L), which was our estimate of what vitamin D levels would be in very dark-skinned, scantily clothed peoples who live around the equator. Until yesterday, some of the best evidence we have had to support that recommendation comes from a 1971 study of 8 consistent sun bathing white lifeguards in Saint Louis, Missouri, whose levels ranged from 50-80 ng/ml.

Haddad JG, Chyu KJ. Competitive protein-binding radioassay for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1971 Dec;33(6):992-5.

Yesterday, Dr. Martine Luxwolda and colleagues at the Dutch University Medical Center Groningen reported the vitamin D levels of 60 pastoral “hunter-gatherers” (35 Maasai and 25 Hadzabe), who live within a few degrees of the equator in Tanzania. All of the subjects had skin type 6, which is the black shiny skin common to those who come from equatorial regions, and also the skin type which needs the most sunlight to produce robust amounts of vitamin D. The authors added, somewhat tongue in cheek, that the natives did not use sunscreen.

Luxwolda MF, Kuipers RS, Kema IP, Janneke Dijck-Brouwer DA, Muskiet FA. Traditionally living populations in East Africa have a mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration of 115 nmol/l. Br J Nutr. 2012 Jan 23:1-5. [Epub ahead of print]

The Maasai are no longer hunter-gatherers but live, along with their cattle, either a settled or a semi-nomadic lifestyle. They wear sparse clothes, which mainly cover their upper legs and upper body, and attempt to avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day. They eat mainly milk and meat from their cattle, although recently they began to add corn porridge to their diet. Their mean 25(OH) vitamin D level was 48 ng/ml (119 nmol/L) and ranged from 23 to 67 ng/ml.

The Hadzabe are traditional hunter-gatherers. Their diet consists of meat, occasional fish, honey, fruits, and tubers. They have no personal possessions. They wear fewer clothes than the Maasai in that the men often wear nothing above the waist. Like the Maasai, they avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day. Their mean 25(OH)D was 44 ng/ml and ranged from 28 to 68 ng/ml.

Many of us have been waiting years for this data. To me, it means that the Vitamin D Council’s recommendation of 50 ng/ml is just about right, although I cannot argue with someone who recommends a level of 55 ng/ml. Remember, when errors in measuring vitamin D are made, they usually are overestimates. Thus, if mean natural levels are around 45 ng/ml, keeping your level around 50-55 ng/ml keeps you within what both the Maasai and the Hadzabe are telling us.

Davos 2012: From Capitalism to Fascism

This is very serious. The elitist power grab is going right at the heart of capitalism. Of course, they have always been for central control, with them in control, but now they are calling out capitalism, directly, as an inferior product.

On Friday, I attacked Larry Summers for blaming the current crisis on capitalism. I thought he was a lone wolf attempting to see how far the anti-capitalist agenda could be pushed. I was wrong.

It appears Summers simply fired the first shot in a new aggressive move by elitists to discredit capitalism outright. The elitists are gathering in Davos, Switzerland right now for the 2012 World Economic Forum.

Check out this horrifying report from AFP on the Summit (my emphasis):

Economic and political elites meeting this week at the Swiss resort of Davos will be asked to urgently find ways to reform a capitalist system that has been described as “outdated and crumbling.”

“We have a general morality gap, we are over-leveraged, we have neglected to invest in the future, we have undermined social coherence, and we are in danger of completely losing the confidence of future generations,” said Klaus Schwab, host and founder of the annual World Economic Forum.

“Solving problems in the context of outdated and crumbling models will only dig us deeper into the hole.

“We are in an era of profound change that urgently requires new ways of thinking instead of more business-as-usual,” the 73-year-old said, adding that “capitalism in its current form, has no place in the world around us.”

Some 1,600 economic and political leaders, including 40 heads of states and governments, will be asked to come up with new ideas as they converge at eastern Switzerland’s chic ski station for the 42nd edition of the five-day World Economic Forum which opens Wednesday.

From a press release on the Davos forum:

The Davos Open Forum celebrates its 10th anniversary with a programme including a top-level debate on the future of capitalism.

As I pointed out in my comment on Summers, capitalism has nothing to do with the current crisis. It is the interventionist measures (especially central banking) that have caused the current crisis. These measure have distorted capitalism and yet these elitist schemers, who are largely to blame for the crisis, have the chutzpah to blame the crisis on capitalism and to call for more interventions that will benefit no one but the elitist themselves.

TEPCO Notes Rise in Radioactive Leaks from Damaged Reactors

Tokyo, Jan. 23 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> on Monday reported an increase in radioactive materials leaking from damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant.
The total amount of radioactive cesium that leaked from the containment vessels of the No. 1 to No. 3 reactors reached 70 million becquerels per hour, up 12 million becquerels from the December level, the power firm said.
It seems that radioactive dusts were stirred up because plant workers went inside reactor buildings and removed rubble, TEPCO officials said.
The outcome was reported to the second meeting on medium- to long-term measures toward decommissioning of the damaged reactors held between the firm and the government on Monday.
Last month, the leaked amount was put at 10 million becquerels each for the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors and 40 million becquerels for the No. 3 reactor.

Story at-a-glance
Wheat and other glutinous grains are probably the worst starches to consume, in terms of metabolic impact versus micronutrient benefit, and many are heavy in toxins
Most people will need some starchy carbohydrates for optimal health; the optimal amount appears to be about 20 to 30 percent of your total caloric intake, or approximately 200 calories per day for the average person
The most important consideration is that your carbohydrate sources are as organic and unprocessed as possible, free of pesticides and chemical additives, and not genetically modified
Studies now demonstrate that your child’s diet has a direct impact on his or her cognitive function, and that both quality and quantity of carbohydrates are important

By Dr. Mercola

Grains should represent a small part of your diet, regardless of your age. I personally seek to avoid most grains, except rice.

But if you're going to eat some grain-based foods, how much is too much?

This debate heated up earlier this year when two nutritional experts, Dr. Paul Jaminet and Dr. Ron Rosedale, engaged in a debate over how many starches are too many.

Dr. Rosedale believes there is no such thing as a "safe starch" and that all starchy carbohydrates should be avoided, which of course includes all grains.

Dr. Jaminet, on the other hand, is a little more forgiving of some of the "safer starches," such as potatoes and rice. He believes some people need a small amount of these in their diets.

This is an interesting debate.

It's well thought out and well articulated, but quite lengthy.

If you have time, I do recommended your reading through all of it to see the nuances of their contrasting views.

Controversial Carbs

The amount of carbohydrates one should consume for optimal health is a widely controversial topic. Fortunately we can gain some insights as to how much we might need by examining a child's diet, which is critically important for proper brain development. As you would expect, the quality of a child's diet will directly affect his or her cognitive functioning. Two recent studies highlight just how important this is.

STUDY #1: In the first study, Japanese researchers analyzed the relationship between breakfast staples and intelligence in children. They divided 290 healthy children into three groups according to their breakfast staple—rice, bread, or both. What they found was that children in the rice group had significantly more gray matter in their brains and showed a higher perceptual organization index, which is a component of intelligence. This supports the theory that children's breakfast choices affect their cognitive function.

According to the study:

"... [O]ne possible mechanism underlying the difference between the bread and the rice groups may be the difference in the glycemic index (GI) of these two substances; foods with a low GI are associated with less blood-glucose fluctuation than are those with a high GI."

STUDY #2: A 2011 cross-sectional study in Tehran, Iran, examined the relationship between long-term refined carbohydrate intake and non-verbal intelligence among 6 to 7-year-old schoolchildren. Researchers found that refined carbohydrate consumption and non-verbal IQ were inversely related for these Tehrani children. In other words, the more refined carbs the children were eating, the lower their non-verbal IQs. So how much starch is too much starch for breakfast—or any other meal, for that matter?

My Personal Experience with an Ultra-Low Carb Diet

After trying both approaches, my experience suggests that Dr. Jaminet's position is more clinically relevant. The challenge is that most people will not be able to lower their carb level to the below 20 percent suggested by Dr. Rosedale. This very low level is a long reach from the average American diet, which is actually around 50 percent carbohydrate—it is simply too hard. Achieving Dr. Jaminet's far more carb-liberal recommendations will be enough of a challenge for most.

When I eliminated all my grains and starchy vegetables, I actually experienced some negative effects. My energy levels declined considerably, and my cholesterol, which is normally about 150, rose to over 200. It appears I was suffering a glucose deficiency and this can trigger lipoprotein abnormalities. It also seemed to worsen my kidney function. So, while carbohydrate restriction is a miracle move for most people, like most good things in life, you can overdo it.

This information really underscores how important glucose is as a nutrient, and some people can't manufacture glucose from protein as well as others, so they need SOME starches in their diet or else they will suffer from metabolic stress.

About half of your proteins have glucose attached to them, and if they don't have glucose, they simply don't work well, if at all. Your body needs glucose both as a substrate and as a fuel in order for these proteins to work well. If you drop below 200 calories of glucose per day, you might notice some negative consequences in the way you feel and even in some of your blood work, as I did.

My experience now shows me that I need to have some source of non-vegetable carbs. I still seek to avoid nearly all grains, except for rice and potatoes. I typically limit my total carbohydrate calories to about 25 percent of total daily intake, and my protein to about 15 percent, with the additional 60 percent coming from healthful fats like butter, egg yolks, avocados, coconut oil, nuts and animal fat.

However, that is what works for me. You must listen to YOUR body and perform your own experiment. The bottom line is how your body responds, and you're the ONLY one who can determine that.

So, if you are going to try eating some grain-based foods, which ones are the least likely to cause a problem? How damaging is wheat versus rice? Or potatoes? Before casting a vote on this, it is important to understand how grains contain different amounts and types of natural toxins that can create problems with your health.

Avoid Carbs that are Loaded with Toxins

Aside from providing excessive calories as carbohydrates, one of the major adverse consequences of most grains is that they are loaded with toxins. In fact, as you'll learn in the interview above, the average person gets about 1.5 grams of natural food toxins daily, which makes up more than 99.9 percent of all the toxins ingested. These are toxins made by plants, as opposed to manmade toxins, which serve to protect the plant from being eaten by mammals.

The one grain type that is virtually toxin free is white rice, which has far fewer toxins than brown rice. The vast majority of toxins in white rice are destroyed by cooking, which is why white rice is the only grain Dr. Jaminet recommends. One of the grain toxins with which you may be familiar is gluten.

"Gluten" comes from the Latin word for glue, so named because its adhesive properties hold bread and other baked goods together. Gluten is present in grains such as wheat, rye, and barley. The glue-like properties interfere with the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, including the nutrients from other foods in the same meal. The result is a sticky, constipating lump in your gut, rather than a nutritious, easily digested meal.

This undigested glutinous gut-bomb may trigger your immune system to attack the lining of your small intestine, causing diarrhea or constipation, nausea, and/or abdominal pain. Severe reactions are classified as "celiac disease," and milder reactions fall under the category of "gluten intolerance." Over time, your small intestine can become increasingly damaged and less able to absorb nutrients, such as iron and calcium. This in turn can lead to anemia, osteoporosis and other health problems.

Modern wheat (and other grains) differs greatly from the wheat our ancestors ate. The proportion of gluten protein in wheat has increased enormously as a result of hybridization. Legumes are also loaded with lectins, which is why most who follow a Paleo type diet avoid them.

Lectins: The Plant Kingdom's Weapon of Mass Destruction

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that are widespread in the plant kingdom. Plants produce lectins to ward off their natural enemies, such as fungi and insects. However, lectins are not just the nemesis of fungi and insects, but are also plaguing humans. Please refer to the excellent video above by Chris Meletis, ND, who discusses the many dangers posed by these glycoproteins.

There are many types of lectins.

Some lectins (including those in wheat) bind to specific receptor sites on your intestinal mucosal cells and interfere with the absorption of nutrients across your intestinal wall and into your blood. So, they act as "antinutrients."

Lectins are proteins that are looking to hook up with carbohydrates in your body. C-reactive protein, which is a marker of inflammation, is one example of the many lectins you have circulating right now. Lectins are also used to determine blood type. Lectins trigger inflammation, stimulate a hyper-immune response, and increase your blood viscosity—all conditions that can predispose you to disease.

Wheat Lectin (WGA) is Cytotoxic, Neurotoxic, Cardiotoxic and Immunotoxic

Wheat lectin, or "wheat germ agglutinin" (WGA), is largely responsible for many of wheat's pervasive ill effects. WGA is highest in whole wheat, especially sprouted whole wheat, but wheat isn't the only grain with significant lectin. All seeds of the grass family (rice, wheat, spelt, rye, etc.) are high in lectins.

WGA has the potential to damage your health by the following mechanisms (list is not all-inclusive):
•Pro-Inflammatory: WGA lectin stimulates the synthesis of pro-inflammatory chemical messengers, even at very small concentrations
•Immunotoxic: WGA lectin may bind to and activate white blood cells
•Neurotoxic: WGA lectin can pass through your blood-brain barrier and attach to the protective coating on your nerves, known as the myelin sheath. It is also capable of inhibiting nerve growth factor, which is important for the growth, maintenance, and survival of certain neurons
•Cardiotoxic: WGA lectin induces platelet aggregation and has a potent disruptive effect on tissue regeneration and removal of neutrophils from your blood vessels
•Cytotoxic (Toxic to cells): WGA lectin may induce programmed cell death (apoptosis)

Research also shows that WGA may disrupt endocrine and gastrointestinal function, interfere with genetic expression, and share similarities with certain viruses.

The following foods contain chitin-binding lectins, which are very similar to wheat lectin:
•Barley
•Rye
•Tomato

Chitins are the primary binding target of wheat lectin; therefore, wheat lectin and chitin-binding lectin are functionally identical. This could be important information if you are struggling with celiac disease or other gastrointestinal issues. For a complete understanding about chitin-binding lectins, please read this article by Sayer Ji.

If You're Sugar Sensitive, Beware of the SWEET Potato

Although sweet potatoes have some excellent nutritional components and are considered a "safe starch" by Dr. Jaminet, many people have problems from eating them because of their high fructose content. Dr. Jaminet actually recommends white potatoes over sweet potatoes. There are many different varieties of sweet potato, all varying in sugar content. An article on the Perfect Health Diet website discusses the difference between conventional sweet potatoes and other varieties.

The American sweet potato has been literally bred for sweetness. If you are trying to tease out the nuances of your potential carbohydrate foods, it's worth noting the differences in the varieties.

The American sweet potato has nearly half the sugar content (6.5g per 100g) of grapes (15.5g per 100g). They are sort of half fruit, half starch! By contrast, yams are far less sweet, with only 0.5g of sugar per 100g. White potatoes actually contain more sugar than yams, at 1.2 g.

The Bottom Line

My conclusion is that there is a certain minimum carbohydrate threshold that you should not drop below. The sweet spot for most is 20 to 30 percent of your diet as carbs, but most likely 25 to 30 percent. Most of those calories can come from non-starchy vegetables, but you'll probably need some starchy carbs, such as white potatoes or white rice, and starchy vegetables like carrots and squash.

Breast milk is considered by many to be the perfect food for infants. Breast milk is 40 percent carbohydrate, which is great for babies because they have an increased glucose demand related to their rapid brain development. Adults simply need less.

Regardless of which starchy foods you put on your plate, make sure they are as organic and unprocessed as possible, free of pesticides and chemical additives and NOT genetically modified. I believe that low toxicity, high quality nutrient-dense foods are the MOST important consideration for you and your child's optimal health, as well as your child's brain development.

Regardless of your dietary choices, please remember to ALWAYS listen to your body, as it will give you feedback about whether or not the approach you've chosen is right for your unique biochemistry and genetics. Listen to that feedback and adjust your program accordingly.

For more information on this topic, you can follow the still-ongoing discussion between Dr. Rosedale and Dr. Jaminet in the Perfect Health Diet: Safe Starches Symposium.
