Breast cancer survivors INCREASE the risk of dying prematurely when eating grilled and smoked meats

Breast cancer survivors INCREASE the risk of dying prematurely when eating grilled and smoked meats

(NaturalHealth365) Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that 230,815 women were diagnosed with this disease in 2013 alone.
Now, disturbing study results show that female breast cancer survivors who ate more grilled, barbecued and smoked meats had a greater risk of dying, compared to those with lower intakes. Keep reading to discover how cooking meats at high temperatures can generate dangerous toxins – and the best way to protect your health.
Warning to all breast cancer survivors: What does the research show about eating animal meat?
The study, conducted at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, followed 1,508 women diagnosed with breast cancer for a median 17.6 years. During this time, 597 deaths occurred – 237 of which were associated with breast cancer.
Researchers found that having a higher intake of meats prior to the breast cancer diagnosis was associated with a 23 percent risk of dying from any cause. And, having higher amounts of grilled, barbecued and smoked meats after the diagnosis of breast cancer carried an increased mortality rate of 31 percent – a very substantial rise.
Other studies have mirrored the results of the research, and shown that the incidence of certain types of cancers increases among people who eat meat cooked at high temperatures.
In a University of Minnesota study, women who ate overcooked hamburgers increased their breast cancer risk by more than 50 percent compared to those who consumed their burgers rare or medium.
And an Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women who regularly ate well-done steak, hamburgers and bacon had a shocking 4.62-fold increase in their risk of developing breast cancer.
Glycotoxin alert: Your method of food preparation matters
Experts say that eating foods cooked at high temperatures – through grilling, broiling, roasting, searing or frying – can expose the body to dangerous chemicals and DNA-altering mutagens known as glycotoxins, or “advanced glycation end products.”
These harmful compounds are released by the “browning” reaction – the darkening that gives grilled meat its charred appearance. The browning reaction produced by cooking at high temperatures causes the release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines, both of which are linked to cancers of the breast and prostate.
How exactly do advanced glycation end products damage the body and raise cancer risk?
Advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, not only occur naturally in foods, but can be formed in the body through normal metabolism.
However, excessively high amounts in tissues and bloodstream can become pathogenic. AGEs cause tissue-damaging oxidative stress and produce chronic inflammation – factors that are at the root of degenerative chronic disease. They can also alter enzymes, hormones, antibodies and neurotransmitters – while damaging cell DNA and increasing susceptibility to cancer.
And, the acronym “AGE” is an apt one. Many experts believe that these glycotoxins can trigger weight gain and even premature aging.
Animal studies have shown that AGE-rich diets are associated with atherosclerosis and kidney diseases. In contrast, researchers found that reducing dietary AGEs in humans with diabetes reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative damage.
How can I reduce my consumption of AGEs?
Avoiding exposure to highly cooked foods is a good place to start. Experts recommend using “moist heat” methods of cooking, such as poaching, steaming, boiling and stewing – along with using shorter cooking times and cooking at lower temperatures. (Of course, you still want to be sure that meats are fully cooked).
Interestingly, cooking with acidic ingredients – such as lemon or vinegar in marinades – can dramatically cut production of AGEs.
You can also adjust your food choices to generate fewer AGEs. Animal-based foods such as meats and poultry are naturally high in AGEs – and cooking triggers the formation of even more. For example, pan-fried beef contains a whopping 9,052 kilounits of AGEs per serving – and bacon rings in at 11,905 kilounits.
On the other hand, plant-based foods such as vegetables, whole grains, fruits and nuts have much lower levels of AGEs.  As a general rule, the more protein and fat a food contains, the more likely it is to be high in AGEs.
Studies have shown that certain supplements, including carnosine, benfotiamine and pyridoxal-5-phosphate, can function as anti-glycation agents. And indole-3-carbinol, an anti-cancer compound found in cruciferous vegetables, can sharply reduce damage from AGEs.
If you absolutely can’t resist indulging in an occasional sizzling steak, it would probably be wise to prepare it with an acidic marinade, and generous amounts of broccoli and Brussels sprouts on the side.

WeatherWar101 posts new analysis video of Hurricane Harvey, appearing to show artificial augmentation of the storm’s intensity and movements

2,100
VIEWS

(Natural News) Earlier this week, we posted one of the most intriguing articles the internet has seen all week. Entitled “Weather wars” theorists claim Hurricane Harvey was engineered, “steered” toward Houston as a “weather terrorism” weapon, the article has already garnered over 400,000 views (and rising).
The article covered the rising interest in a concept called “weather wars,” which asserts that Hurricane Harvey and other storms are in essence “weaponized” through artificial augmentation, direction control and other factors. The article documented two key U.S. patents which describe advanced weather control technologies. It also shared several videos, including one from WeatherWar101, a website that’s gaining popularity among weather war analysts who say that Harvey was weaponized and directed as a kind of weapon of mass destruction.
WeatherWar101 took issue with some of the statements in our story — pointing out, for example, that they are not “Sofia Smallstorm” — and the founder of WeatherWar101 has contacted Natural News in an effort to get some statements corrected. We are now in the process of inviting WeatherWar101 for a full interview to cover everything they want to cover. This interview can be a written interview, an audio interview or a video interview (their choice), and if they agree to this interview, we hope to ask them lots of questions that readers have also been asking us.
As I said in the previous story, I’m no expert in weather modification, so my entire approach to this is with an open (but skeptical) mind. If I made any factual errors in the previous story, those errors were entirely accidental. I’d love to get the record corrected and let WeatherWar101 explain their theories about what’s happening. At the same time, as an active laboratory scientist, I will of course ask lots of skeptical questions.
There does seem to be compelling visual evidence that something very strange is happening with these storms. For example, look at the artificial cloud creation happening at the 5:40 mark in this new video that was just posted by WeatherWar101:

As this video clearly depicts, something is obviously adding a tremendous volume of vapor / clouds to the Harvey storm as it’s strengthening:
AAA
The video says that without this augmentation, Hurricane Harvey would have fallen apart on its own. It was the augmentation, we’re told, that added strength to the hurricane and turned it into a weapon.
“These in-place circular sudden bursts of water vapor are ‘rapid evaporation’,” explains the video:
More than that, it irrefutably illustrates that not only is it manmade, the inflicted misery is far beyond intentional. Even after the first night of Harvey’s landfall, the complete destruction of Rockport, and two feet of flooding is Houston, the perpetrators were far from satisfied with the devastation they caused. If the perpetrators had any semblance of mercy or human decency, they simply would have allowed Harvey to dissipate as it was already doing (illustrated in the first satellite series in this video), and allowed the victims of this disaster to begin trying to recover their lives. Instead, they deliberately refueled this storm system with massive On-Land Water Vapor Generation (illustrated and proven by the tell-tale Raid Evaporation Bursts which are uncontestably manmade), causing the worst night of flooding in Houston for the entire event.
The video does appear to show many examples of “rapid evaporation” that seem to be adding significant water vapor to the storm system. According to WeatherWar101, the 50 inches of rain that devastated the region were at least partially augmented in a deliberate effort to worsen and “weaponize” the storm.
What do you think about all of this?
Personally, I’m intrigued by all this, just like most of you. We already know that in the 1940s, scientists harnessed the power of the atom to turn high-density elements into weapons of mass destruction. It’s called the “atomic bomb.” We also know that weather control and modification technology does exist at some scale; that’s been widely documented and even covered in media reports (such as the rain generating technology near Dubai).
We also know that Hurricane Harvey exhibited some highly unusual tracking behavior, such as heading inland at high speed, stalling, reversing course, then hanging out at precisely the worse location to allow a catastrophic downpour to hover over Houston for days on end.
Still, observation of a catastrophe is not proof that it was engineered. The idea that such storms could be augmented, controlled or weaponized is, of course, an extraordinary claim. And extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence as a general rule. Yet, people like WeatherWar101 and Dane Wigington at Geoengineering Watch seem to be offering increasingly compelling pieces of evidence that support their claims.
So we’re inviting WeatherWar101 for an interview to tell his story and share what he knows. We’ll share the interview with you so that you can decide whether you think his theories have merit or not. In the mean time, here’s another new video from Dane Wigington from Geoengineering Watch called “Engineered Climate Cataclysm.” We’re also open to interviewing Wigington if he wants to join us for a chat. This issue of weather weaponization needs to be thoroughly discussed in a more open forum, I believe. After all, Al Gore says we control the weather all the time. He calls it “climate change.” So why can’t we openly discuss deliberate weather control technologies, too?

Crouching Produce Stand, Hidden Medicine Cabinet
Fruit is not only enjoyable to eat -- as it should be, considering the very word fruit stems from the Latin word frui, meaning "to enjoy, use" -- but it also nourishes and protects the body with powerful, built-in medicinal activity. Fruits are by design a "perfect food," intended to entice animals to consume them in order to help disseminate their seeds, for instance. This means that unlike grains, and other lectin- and anti-nutrient-rich organisms, e.g. wheat, tomato, beans, we humans have chosen to make into our food, fruits are less likely to come equipped with "invisible thorns," as they benefit as much in being eaten as we do in eating them. Also, like our now hard-wired biological dependence on obtaining vitamin C from external sources (unlike most animals we can not produce it from glucose), countless millennia of fruit consumption has left our genetic infrastructure in need of continual resupply of many of the key vitamins and phytocompounds they contain copious quantities of.
With this symbiotic relationship between fruit-bearing plant and seed-disseminating animal in mind, the following healing fruit facts won't seem so unbelievable...
Grapefruit – Infection: The seeds of this fruit, at a dose of 5 to 6 every 8 hours for two weeks, have been shown effective in eradicating urinary tract infections, including drug-resistant strains.[i]
Pineapple – Cancer: The enzyme bromelain, extracted from pineapple, has been shown to be more potent that the chemotoxic agent 5-fluorouracil in killing cancer, in the animal model.[ii]
Watermelon – Hypertension: Watermelon contains amino acids, such as L-citrulline, which help the blood vessels dilate naturally, countermanding endothelial dysfunction and reducing blood pressure. [iii] [iv]
Cherry – Inflammation/Pain: Compounds within cherries known as anthrocyanins have been shown to be as effective as NSAID drugs in reducing pain and inflammation.[v] [vi]
Lemon – Kidney Stones:  Lemonade therapy has been shown to be a reasonable alternative for patients with kidney stones.[vii]
Papaya – Skin Ulcers: Used in Jamaica as a traditional medicine, new research indicates that topical application of unripe papaya fruit on chronic skin ulcers generates a positive response rate 72% of the time.[viii]
Pomegranate – Hormones: Pomegranate is the fruiting ovary of the pomegranate plant, contains potent plant estrogens which do not stimulate unregulated cell proliferation, and may function as an ideal "back up" ovary for women's hormone health.[ix]
Kiwifruit – Cholesterol – When used with hawthorn, kiwifruit extract was found to be superior to simvastatin (trade name Zocor) in lowering cholesterol in mice fed a high cholesterol diet.[x]
Cranberries – Cranberry: The extract of this berry has been shown as effective as the drug trimethoprim in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections in older women, without increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance/super-infection and/or fungal infection.[xi]
Elderberry – Flu: If you are lucky enough to find elderberry on your produce stand, you will find that it has been used as a natural anti-respiratory infection remedy since ancient times. New  research confirms that it contains flavonoids which compare favorably with the antiviral drug Tamiflu at binding to and preventing H1N1 infection. [xii]
Coconut – Gastric Ulcers: both the milk and the water of the coconut have been shown to have anti-ulcerogenic properties against NSAID drug-induced mucosal erosion.[xiii]
Plantain – Diarrhea: Plantain has been used to treat diarrhea by traditional cultures as a folk medicine, but clinical research now confirms its value in the dietary management of persistent diarrhea in hospitalized children, in relation to diarrheal duration, weight gain and costs.[xiv]
Strawberries – Heart Disease: Many red fruits and berries have now been shown to be valuable for heart health, but strawberry is beginning to emerge as uniquely beneficial to cardiovascular health. Strawberry powder has been shown to improve the lipid profile and oxidative stress markers, and markers of atherosclerosis, in women with metabolic syndrome.[xv]   [xvi] Strawberry extract has also been shown to relax the lining of the blood vessels, which may reduce high blood pressure and disburden the heart muscle from over-exertion.[xvii] Even the strawberry leaf extract has been shown to increase coronary artery blood flow in a manner similar to hawthorn extract.[xviii]

“Nature, which makes nothing durable, always repeats itself so that nothing which it makes may be lost.”
–Oscar Wilde
Have you ever thought about the natural laws that underpin our world? Governed by sacred geometry, organic patterns are the building blocks that shape our experiences. They show up again and again, begging to be recognized, understood, and utilized for the benefit of mankind.
It is an unmistakable fact: the natural world tends to repeat itself. Like the swirling pattern seen in hurricanes, sea shells, and spiral galaxies, nature has a way of creating signatures that surface repeatedly across people, places, and things.
Early physicians took notice of these natural phenomenon, and created a pharmacopoeia that centered around the concept that like affects like. Substances that look alike were considered intrinsically connected, and believed to possess similar natures. Medicines were developed based on the belief that the qualities of one would harmoniously relate to, and thereby enhance and heal the other.
This idea has stood the test of time. Originally called the Law of Similarities, the idea later become known as the Doctrine of Signatures. Credited to Renaissance physician and alchemist, Paracelsus, this doctrine contends that Earth is governed by the microcosm-macrocosm principle: as within, so without, and as above, so below.
These herbal pharmacists took visual cues from the flora. If a plant resembled a part of the body, that was an indication of healing properties for that body part. Signatures presented as similar textures, shapes, and colors, and were considered benevolent signs from the Divine that mankind could easily interpret.
Our modern approach to medicine does not allow for intuition, nor does it acknowledge the power of philosophical or spiritual beliefs in healing. Therefore, the Doctrine of Signatures has largely been left behind as "magical thinking" by the majority of today’s medical professionals. But not all this foundational wisdom has been lost.
Paradigm-shifting studies on placebo effect may help expand the limited views of modern medicine regarding the power of beliefs to impact healing outcomes. Until then, there are some foods that science validates as having the power to heal the part of the body that they closely resemble. Let’s examine a few of these signature foods, and learn what qualities they possess that can help keep our human systems functioning optimally.
Pomegranate
Pomegranates are prized for possessing numerous regenerative properties, many of which bear strikingly similar signatures to the human systems they restore.
The deep red, astringently sweet juice of the pomegranate has been clinically studied to increase the health and vitality of our blood. A 2014 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism found that consuming pomegranate extract 30 minutes before exercise enhanced the diameter of blood vessels and increased blood flow. The group that consumed pomegranate juice also noted delayed onset of fatigue during exercise as well as a significant increase in post-workout vitality.
Pomegranates are known worldwide as symbols of fertility, thanks in part to their resemblance to human ovaries. Amazingly, pomegranates not only look like human ovaries, they produce some of the very same hormones (e.g. estrone and testosterone) and have shown promise in the treatment of menopause.
Epithelial tissue refers to the thin layer of cells that make up the connective tissue which lines the inside and outside of the body. Flat in shape and tightly-packed together, these epithelia closely resemble the clustered red seeds inside the pomegranate.
If you have ever tried pomegranate juice, you probably noticed the clean, astringent effect it has on the inside of the mouth. This is where pomegranate’s benefits for epithelial tissue are on display.

Epithelial tissue lines the inside of our mouths and throats. When you drink pomegranate juice, this same cleansing effect that you taste and feel in your mouth, is also occurring in your arteries.
The effect is clinically significant. A 3-year study on the effects of pomegranate juice consumption on atherosclerotic patients showed that within just 3 months of starting an 8-oz. daily pomegranate juice regimen, patients demonstrated a reversal of plaque build-up in the carotid arteries by 13%!
And unlike pharmaceutical interventions, the benefits of drinking pomegranate juice deepen the longer you consume it. Imagine the benefit this simple (and delicious!) intervention could impart to the millions of people on dangerous statin drugs.

Flaxseed

Flaxseeds look very much like the epithelial tissue they heal and are mucilaginous, much like the epithelial tissues in our body which produce a slippery, protective mucus coat known as the glycocalyx.
Flax has been consumed by humans for thousands of years, and its many therapeutic uses are well-documented. Ancient Ayurvedic texts herald flax seeds and the rich, lustrous oil they produce, as healing for the skin, useful in fighting fatigue, and as a powerful anti-inflammatory, among other benefits.
Modern dieticians talk about flaxseeds’ high lignan count, referring to the isolated part of the plant that has been identified as a powerful antioxidant. Ingesting flaxseed oil has been shown to speed wound healing by stimulating collagen synthesis, giving credence to its historical value for skin conditions.

Science keeps adding to the already long list of reasons to prize this wondrous plant. Studies have demonstrated the therapeutic value of flaxseed in numerous clinical trials, including the treatment and prevention of:
  • obesity
  • bowel disease
  • diabetes
  • kidney disease
  • cancers and tumors
  • cardiovascular disease
It was flax’s impressive resume that suggested its use in the treatment of certain cancers. Animal studies showed flaxseed inhibits the formation of colon, breast, skin, and lung tumors. It’s positive effects on blood insulin highlighted a correlation to reduced risks of pancreatic and colorectal cancers.
A 2007 animal study by Chen et al, showed that a diet of 5% and 10% flaxseed for 8 weeks, inhibited tumor growth by 26% and 38%, respectively.
Flaxseed’s high lignan count is believed to be a key to its success in treating cancers of the mammary and prostate. Lignans are one of the major classes of phytoestrogens, biologically similar to our own estrogens. A diet high in these protective nutrients is believed to inhibit the growth of hormone-related cancers and tumors.

Walnuts

Walnuts may be the most poetic of all signatures when it comes to resembling the part of the body that they nourish. It is impossible to deny the walnut’s similarities to our human brain in shape, texture, and composition, down to the bihemispheric "brain" of the nut!
Rich in healthy fats, walnuts are known to have a disproportionately high amount of the specific fatty acids, EPA/DHA omega 3 alpha linolenic acid, that the brain requires for optimal health.
Studies show that walnuts support the development of more than three dozen neuron-transmitters within the brain. These neurons enhance the development of neural pathways which help to ward off age-related cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Moreover, walnuts contain well-known neuroprotective compounds, such as gallic acid, vitamin E isomers, melatonin, folate, and polyphenols. Are these brain-healthy effects mere coincidence, or is the walnut’s appearance a clue so obvious, we would be nuts to overlook it?
Ancient Science for Modern Times
We learn a lot about the future by studying the past. This ancient, magical science still has a lot to teach us about good health. To properly understand the Doctrine of Signatures, one needs to look past the surface, and seek to understand the categorical nature of things.
In the words of famed herbalist, Matthew Wood: “Signatures represent configurations of energy or patterns in plants, and these correspond to similar patterns in people. We are not looking..for a superficial resemblance, but for one that operates on the level of essence.”

By taking cues from the natural world, we can enter into a new, golden age of mutual validation, where ancient worlds and modern science meet to confirm each other, amplifying the awareness that natural, self-healing is the only sane path forward in health care.

Aging is a natural part of our lives and the passage of time will inevitably bring with it some physical changes such as greying and thinning hair, skin changes like more wrinkles and blemishes, decreased muscle mass and bone loss.
This passage of time also brings with it a higher likelihood that we will experience malnutrition, slowed cognitive function, weaker bones, and weakened immune system function.  The process is quite unique to each of us and although genetics may play a role in our “aging” process the physical changes we experience are greatly influenced by our “life story”, the dietary and lifestyle choices that we make along the way.
/105716491/ths_article_mobile_bb2

Our personal view and outlook on the aging process also influences how we experience our “golden years”. Two people of the same chronological age can experience aging very differently; while one person remains healthy, mobile and active the other does not and it is how we live in both our younger years and our advanced years that greatly influences the outcome.
/105716491/ths_article_desktop_btf_bb2

To help ensure that we remain healthy, mobile and active throughout the lifespan we have to make sure that we are doing those things in our younger years that will properly nourish and support our body throughout the aging journey. We also have to make sure that, once we do reach our advanced years, that we are doing those things that support our unique needs at that time.
In our younger years, it is important that we are incorporating the following strategies for improved nutritional and lifestyle habits to foster a healthier present and a healthier future.
Habits to Keep You Healthy

/10
  • Eat a nutrient dense diet; incorporate a wide variety of vegetables from a wide array of colours, some fruits, adequate complete proteins, adequate complex carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and high fibre food choices
  • Drink lots of good quality fresh water; aim for at least 8/8oz glasses per day
  • Start each day with the juice of half a lemon in water (cold or boiling), this will gently cleanse the digestive tract, the liver and the kidneys
  • Avoid saturated fats such as margarine, shortening, trans fats, and overheated oils/fats; all of these lend to cell degeneration
  • Avoid concentrated and refined sugars of all kinds; they weaken the immune system and they contribute to weight gain
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco
  • Keep your bowels moving at least once a day, the intestines are capable of holding up to 65 pounds of waste! It takes water and fibre to keep the bowels moving
  • Exercise regularly; stretch every morning and take part in some sort of aerobic activity three times per week… walk more and drive less
  • Maintain a healthy weight by eating wholesome, good quality food, eating only when genuinely hungry and only as much as needed to satisfy your hunger
  • Recognize when stress is becoming problematic and incorporate effective coping strategies (relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, exercise)
  • Get adequate good quality sleep; sleeping gives our bodies a break and allows for rejuvenation and repair
  • Think young; don’t let a number dictate how you feel or what you do
  • Act young; do those things that you love and that make you smile and laugh
  • Get to know your body and pay attention to symptoms – learn to recognize potential problems before they develop into more serious problems
  • Take a good quality, whole foods multi-vitamin that contains B vitamins; Folic acid, B6, and B12 are all related to healthy cognitive function

In our advanced years, it is important that we are incorporating the following strategies that address and support the unique changes that commonly occur as we age.
Advanced Age And An Increased Risk Of Malnutrition And Related Deficiencies
As we age, we are more likely to become malnourished because we tend to eat less (food becomes less appetizing, our appetites get smaller, it is more difficult to prepare healthy meals) and we have diminished enzyme availability that is needed to properly break down foods, we tend to have less stomach acid to help with digestion and we also tend to absorb less of the nutrients from the foods we do eat. We are at an increased risk of becoming deficient in vital nutrients; common deficiencies include protein, fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12 and C. And quite often we are at an increased risk of dehydration from a lack of consuming water-dense food items and adequate amounts of water.
What We Can Do
  • Plan out your healthy weekly meal plan and your grocery list, this will help to ensure that you remain on budget and that you are choosing good quality wholesome food items
  • Seek the assistance of a family member or community program for grocery shopping and food preparation; having your meals prepared for the week will help to ensure that you are not missing meals or reaching for unhealthy quick and easy options
  • Ensure that your food choices will best support proper digestion and absorption; avoid foods that you are intolerant or allergic to, avoid refined, processed and sugary “junk” food items and avoid unhealthy fats
  • Choose live, natural and whole foods that are locally grown and in-season. Incorporate more vegetables, whole grains, and fiber into your routine. Choose healthy fats from lean meats like chicken and healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil, flaxseed or hemp oil. Choose fresh fish like salmon, herring, cod, flounder, and mackerel.
  • Support digestive weaknesses by taking a digestive enzyme supplement and a probiotic supplement
  • Identify nutrient deficiencies and ensure that good quality supplementations are added to your routine as needed

As we age we may notice changes with our memory and our speed of completing “thinking tasks” such as mathematics. Nutrition is so important for our brain health; our sending and receiving stations are built out of essential fats, phospholipids and amino acids (proteins), the message itself, the neurotransmitter (e.g. serotonin, dopamine), is usually made up of amino acids/protein and important vitamins and minerals are responsible for kick-starting the enzymes required to turn amino acids into neurotransmitters (the messages).
What We Can Do
Ensure that our diet consists of the 4 essentials for our brain; glucose (in the form of good carbohydrates), good fats, amino acids (which are the break-down materials of protein) and various other important vitamins and minerals:
  • Glucose: Eat more complex carbohydrates – whole grains, brown rice, vegetables, etc. – these are broken down more slowly and will provide your body with a more consistent source of energy, they will also help to stabilize your mood
  • Good Fats: Ensure that you are choosing healthy fats in the way of olive oil, fatty fish, avocados, and nuts, our bodies need a constant supply of good fats in order for us to thrive, they are needed to support and protect our brain cells.
  • Protein (amino acids): Proteins are the building blocks for tissue growth and repair, cells cannot be formed without protein in our diets; important amino acids for our brain include Tryptophan (mood enhancer), Tyrosine (for physical, mental performance) and GABA (helps to reduce anxiety)
  • Important vitamins and minerals: B vitamins support the nervous system and are very helpful if you suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression; Vitamins B3, B9, and B12 are particularly important for our brain health. Calcium and Magnesium are both important for good brain health; magnesium helps boost brain function and calcium is a part of the electrical signals within our nervous system. Manganese is needed for normal brain and nerve function. Water is key; it is vital for good internal organ function and proper elimination, dehydration has such an impact on our entire system, including our brain.
Advanced Age And Weaker Bones And Increased Joint Pain
As we age we may notice changes in our bone health, women are particularly at risk because they are no longer producing as much estrogen which is needed in the absorption of calcium. Our posture isn’t quite what it was, we may be “creaky” and stiff and we may experience more joint pain.

What We Can Do
  • Decrease your acidic load by removing caffeine, tobacco and carbonated drinks from your routine
  • Effectively manage stress by enjoying the outdoors and the things you love doing
  • Ensure that you are eating a whole foods diet with fresh, good quality food choices that will help to ensure that we are getting important nutrients for our bones including calcium, magnesium, Vitamin B, C, D, K, zinc, copper, and manganese, potassium and boron
  • Ensuring an adequate intake of protein; protein deficiency = bone loss
  • A diet rich in vegetables and an adequate amount of fruit (3 servings per day)
  • Adequate safe, good quality drinking water (approximately 8-8 oz. glasses per day)
  • Exercise regularly, especially beneficial is incorporating some weight bearing exercises into your routine
Advanced Age And A Weaker Immune System and Increased Infections/Illness
As we age we may notice that we are more susceptible to illness (colds, flu/infections)
What We Can Do
  • Add Active Acidophilus Cultures: Found in many yogurts, promotes a strong digestive system. Avoid yogurt with sugar, as this cancels out the positive effects of the good bacterial culture.
  • Add More garlic: It has antibiotic properties that can help prevent disease. Try to include at least one clove each day in your foods.
  • Add More Sweet Potatoes – one of the most nutritious vegetables you can eat. Just ¾ cup of baked sweet potato gives you 60% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C and more than 300% of your vitamin A.  (Note: Yams contain no vitamin A)
  • Add More Cashews and Pumpkin Seeds that are high in zinc which is necessary for immune function
  • Add More Blueberries: They are full of cancer-fighting antioxidants, plus they are chock full of vitamins A, C, and E, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and fibre with zero fat.
  • Replace Coffee with Green Tea: They are full of antioxidants.  Although tea contains caffeine, green tea has considerably less than coffee and black tea.  Be sure to choose organic, as tea and coffee are two of the most highly pesticide-sprayed products available for human consumption.  Drink 1 to 3 cups a day.
  • Add More Broccoli: It is chock-full of the phytochemical sulforaphane, which makes headlines because of its potent anti-cancer properties. It’s also a rich source of beta-carotene (good for the eyes and immune system, among other things), fibre and vitamin C.
  • Choose Healthy Fats in olive oil, fatty fish, avocados, and nuts help the immune system work optimally.
  • Add More Water: It helps to flush out bad bugs, such as bacteria. To determine the amount your body needs.  Take your weight in pounds, add a zero – and that’s how many millilitres your body needs.  If you are active or sick you need more. (150lbs = 1500ml = 1.5 litres)
  • Get Sufficient Exercise: It creates immune-enhancing chemicals and increases oxygen which helps fight antigens (invaders) more effectively.
  • Practice Relaxation and Stress Reduction: A positive mental attitude makes a big difference in how the body fights disease. When adrenals weaken from stress, the immune system is the next to go.
  • Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is the foundation of immunity. Those who get less than eight hours of restful sleep will have reduced immunity against disease.
  • Incorporate Mind/Body/Spirit into Your Day: Meditation, prayer, yoga, positive thinking, or tai chi has a powerful role in promoting a positive outlook on life and overall wellness.
  • Avoid Sugar: One teaspoon weakens the immune system for several hours.
  • Wash Your Hands: Hand washing decreases your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. If your immune system is strong, it should be able to fight off the virus if it does enter your body, but washing your hands provides a bit of extra protection.
How we lived yesterday and how we choose to live today affects how well and how healthy we experience our advanced years of life. So whether you are in your 20’s or your 70’s it is never too late to foster overall health and wellness by incorporating a nutrient dense diet of good quality, fresh and local food items, adequate sleep, effective stress management and regular exercise into your daily routine.

Roundup linked to over a dozen Health Issues

Independent research finds Roundup linked to over a dozen major health issues

(NaturalHealth365) In March of 2015, the World Health Organization officially classified glyphosate, a primary ingredient of the weed-killer Roundup, as a probable carcinogen. Since then, over 1,200 people with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma have filed suit against Monsanto, the herbicide’s manufacturer, for failing to warn of the cancer risks – with many more lawsuits likely to emerge.
As Monsanto, a.k.a. “the world’s most hated corporation,” continues to insist that glyphosate is safe, two independent researchers are revealing the explosive facts: the agrochemical giant has long known the truth about glyphosate’s toxicity – and deliberately concealed it.
Massive cover-up: The deadly truth about Roundup has been hidden for nearly 40 years
According to the Organic Consumers Association, a non-profit environmental group, independent researcher Dr. Anthony Samsel gained access in 2015 to an enormous cache of scientific documents that clearly show that Monsanto conducted its own studies on glyphosate’s toxicity and health risks – then concealed the research from independent and public review.
For close to 40 years, in fact, the corporation has been knowingly ignoring the cause and effect relationships behind the onset of multiple cancers – a practice that Samsel calls “radical scientific denialism.”
Dr. Samsel – who along with co-investigator Dr. Stephanie Seneff examined and evaluated the Monsanto research – maintains that Monsanto misrepresented data in order to bring glyphosate to market, minimizing adverse findings and dismissing the herbicide’s risks.
One by one, Samsel highlights and refutes the falsehoods perpetrated by Monsanto in order to shill their flagship product and dupe an unsuspecting public into believing that glyphosate is harmless.
Monsanto documents reveal a litany of lies
While Monsanto has always maintained that glyphosate biodegrades rapidly and doesn’t accumulate in body tissues, the company’s own research gives this the lie. Samsel says that he found what he calls “meticulous” measurements – detailing the accumulation of glyphosate in blood, cerebral spinal fluid, lungs, bone marrow and internal organs of the animals studied.
While Monsanto insists glyphosate poses “no long-term risks,” Samsel reports that Monsanto’s own animal studies have demonstrated that glyphosate causes a variety of cancers, including adenoma cancer, prostate and bladder cancer, brain tumors, malignant tumors in lungs and basal cell squamous skin tumors.
You can see for yourself by looking at the Samsel and Seneff paper called, “Glyphosate Pathways to Modern Diseases IV: Cancer and Related Pathologies.”
And, while Monsanto claims to have over 800 different studies attesting to the safety of glyphosate, environmental groups and natural health experts note that the corporation routinely downplays and dismisses independent studies showing glyphosate harms – even when the research is published in peer-reviewed journals.
Scientific research identifies a host of devastating diseases linked to glyphosate
In spite of what Monsanto would have you believe, extensive independent studies show that glyphosate is linked to over a dozen debilitating diseases – some of which are endemic in the United States today.
Glyphosate – which triggers the accumulation of aluminum in the brain – is associated with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ADHD and autism. Researchers note that glyphosate is toxic to beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract, while gut dysbiosis – the disruption of these “friendly” bacteria – is a classic feature of autism.
Researchers also say that glyphosate may be linked to depression because it disrupts serotonin, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter needed for stable mood and restful sleep.
By decreasing sperm and testosterone, glyphosate can contribute to infertility. The chemical is also linked with miscarriages and birth defects – particularly anencephaly, an absence of a major portion of the brain, skull and scalp.
Glyphosate, which damages DNA, is also linked with various types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and cancers of the breast, lung and prostate.
Significantly, the risk of a child having brain cancer doubles if either parent was exposed to Roundup during the two years before the child’s birth.  Glyphosate can also induce a tryptophan deficiency, which can set the stage for IBD and colitis. It is also implicated in the development of “leaky gut,” which some scientists believe can trigger multiple sclerosis.
And, last by not least, chronic kidney and liver disease, diabetes, heart disease and cataracts round out the horrible legacy of illnesses and diseases glyphosate is bequeathing to us – and our children.
Roundup use is based on “The Big Lie”
Although Roundup has been on the market since 1974, its use truly surged in the late 1990s, after the company genetically engineered seeds that could tolerate huge doses of the herbicide. Roundup is also used as a dessicant to allow crops to dry faster, and currently GMO and non-GMO crops alike are being sprayed with glyphosate – including wheat, barley, oats, flax, peas, lentils, beans and sugar cane.
Ironically, Monsanto had assured growers that GMO crops would eventually result in less Roundup being used, but this turned out to be false – in spades. According to EcoWatch, herbicide use increased by a whopping 527 million pounds between 1996 and 2011.
Currently, 20 percent of the world’s glyphosate is used by the United States. And, the US Geological Survey reports that the nation used 280 million pounds of the chemical in 2012 – the last year for which statistics were available.
Why asking government agencies for help is a waste of time
Now, in 2017, this toxic chemical continues to be sprayed at public parks and schools, in playgrounds, and on residential lawns and gardens.
As for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it would be futile to expect any protection from this front – the EPA seems to be in lockstep with Monsanto, maintaining that glyphosate is only dangerous with very long-term, high-level exposure.
In fact, the agency seems to think glyphosate is safe enough for you to drink. The EPA approves small amounts of glyphosate in drinking water, with a so-called “safe level” of 0.7 nanograms per liter.
Some states are waking up: California has just declared Roundup a carcinogen
One state appears to be stepping up to call out glyphosate as the toxin that it is. Just recently, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment declared Roundup to be a carcinogen. Although Monsanto had sued the California OEHHA to stop the listing, the state’s Supreme Court rejected the stay, and glyphosate will be listed under Proposition 65.
With a virtual army of powerful PR companies, high-priced think tanks, and hired academic spokespersons at its command, Monsanto is a formidable foe. But, as this latest ruling demonstrates, the corporation is not all-powerful.
Hopefully more states will follow California’s example – and help torpedo the threat of glyphosate once and for all.

A remarkable human clinical study published in the journal Diabetes Care, the journal of the American Diabetes Association, revealed that turmeric extract was 100% successful at preventing prediabetic patients from becoming diabetic over the course of a 9-month intervention.[1]
Performed by Thailand researchers, the study's primary object was to assess the efficacy of curcumin, the primary polyphenol in turmeric which gives the spice its golden hue, in delaying the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a prediabetic population.
The study design was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial including 240 subjects who met the American Diabetic Association's criteria for prediabetes. All subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 250 mg of curcuminoid or placebo capsules for 9 months.
Type 2 diabetes progression was assessed by measuring a wide range of parameters, including changes in the insulin-producing cells within the pancreas known as β-cells, insulin resistance, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine known as adiponectin, at four different times:  baseline, 3-, 6-, and 9-month visits during the course of intervention.
The results were reported as follows:
"After 9 months of treatment, 16.4% of subjects in the placebo group were diagnosed with T2DM, whereas none were diagnosed with T2DM in the curcumin-treated group. In addition, the curcumin-treated group showed a better overall function of β-cells, with higher HOMA-β (61.58 vs. 48.72; P < 0.01) and lower C-peptide (1.7 vs. 2.17; P < 0.05). The curcumin-treated group showed a lower level of HOMA-IR (3.22 vs. 4.04; P < 0.001) and higher adiponectin (22.46 vs. 18.45; P < 0.05) when compared with the placebo group." [emphasis added]
The researchers concluded:
"A 9-month curcumin intervention in a prediabetic population significantly lowered the number of prediabetic individuals who eventually developed T2DM. In addition, the curcumin treatment appeared to improve overall function of β-cells, with very minor adverse effects. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the curcumin intervention in a prediabetic population may be beneficial."

Discussion
Considering that at least 40% of the US population ages 40-74 are believed to have prediabetes, according to CDC statistics, [2] the health implications of this study are profound.
Curcumin, which constitutes approximately 3-4% of dry turmeric powder by weight, is affordable, safe and easily accessible.  Moreover, over 600 potential health benefits of curcumin (and/or turmeric) have been documented within the biomedical literature freely available to peruse on either the National Library of Medicine's open access database (pubmed.gov search: "curcumin"), or for your convenience, our intricately organized Curcumin database.
